PROGRAM NOTES In 1939, Aram Khachaturian composed the ballet Schast ‘ye (Happiness). Using material from this work, he drastically changed and rewrote it, calling the new work Gayane (1942). Ironically, “Sabre Dance,” the most famous piece from the Gayane ballet, was almost never written; it was added as an additional piece to the score at the request of the Kirov Theater NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR The marked tempo (120) is only a guide; feel free to increase or decrease the tempo to fit your ensemble. Carefully observe all marked articulations, especially in measures 23, 28, and 29. Xylophone is the recommended keyboard percussion instrument; however, bells may also be used. I have written a four-drum timpani part. Please note that this part is completely optional; it is merely a doubling of the low brass and woodwinds. I hope you and your ensemble find “Sabre Dance” to be a worthwhile musical experience. PROGRAM NOTES

In 1939, Aram Khachaturian composed the ballet Schast ‘ye (Happiness). Using material from this work, he drastically changed and rewrote it, calling the new work Gayane (1942). Ironically, “Sabre Dance,” the most famous piece from the Gayane ballet, was almost never written; it was added as an additional piece to the score at the request of the Kirov Theater

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR

The marked tempo (120) is only a guide; feel free to increase or decrease the tempo to fit your ensemble.
