This decision has been a difficult one, however, I am confident that personally and professionally, I leave the school in the expert hands of a very competent and highly professional team, both teaching and non-teaching. It has been a privilege to lead the school over the past 7 years and to have worked with the Mountain Creek High School community over a period of 22 years. Why Changes to payments by Credit Card?

The PCI Data Security Standards, which help to protect thesafety of payment card data, stipulate that it is not a secureprocess to record credit card details to process manually ata later date. From 2017, schools are therefore no longerpermitted to collect your card details in writing or over thephone. To meet these PCI Data Security Standards theDepartment of Education has introduced new ways to pay bycredit card.

SPARQ-ed News

The Students Performing Advanced Research QLD(SPARQ-ed) Immersion program is a collaboration between theUniversity of Queensland Diamantina Institute and EducationQueensland that gives science-orientated students the chanceto experience hands on research with leading doctors andacademics. Four MCSHS students – Kate Gaukroger (Year12), Sarah Gaukroger (Year 12), Yasmin Moore (Year 10), and

Amelia Fleischfresser (Year 10) – spent a week experiencingthe life of researchers within university. For 5 days we boardedat King’s College and travelled to the Translational ResearchInstitute to spend 9 hours every day conducting innovativeresearch in state-of-the-art laboratories with 17 other studentsfrom around Queensland. Our research aimed to uncover thecomplexities of the DNA repair mechanisms involved inresponse to DNA damage and genotoxic stress, contributing tomelanoma treatment. At the end of the week we presented a 45minute symposium which collated and presented our findings. The overarching aim for the project and the entire Institute’sresearch is to develop prevention and treatment of melanoma.Understanding the complexities of DNA repair pathways is vitalto these efforts, and our investigation contributed newinformation to this research. Our week was demanding andchallenging, but gave us an amazing opportunity tocontextualise textbook biology and gain firsthand experience ofexciting scientific developments being made.

International Baccalaureate Update

Keeping it Local

On the afternoons of 19th and 20th of July, Year 12 IBChemistry students headed enthusiastically to the University ofthe Sunshine Coast for the ‘Keeping It Local’ program. Monthsof collaboration between Chemistry teacher and Acting Headof International Baccalaureate Mr Chris Buswell and USC staff, saw students enjoying an impressive array of interactiveactivities and demonstrations. Day One included a grouporientation of the campus, a tour of the Immerse and EngageLearning Spaces, and a first-hand look at research laboratory.Although it felt like fun and games, we learned about thepractical applications of virtual and augmented reality by playingwith simulators.

On day two came the activity we’d all been eagerly awaitingsince first hearing about the project earlier this year - animmersive demonstration of USC’s Cave2TM facility. TheCave2TM provides a near-seamless, 320-degree panoramic3D virtual environment, allowing us to interact with visualisationsof many chemistry concepts, from atomic structure andorbitals, to stereoisomerism and nucleophilic substitutionreactions. The only one of its kind in the world used for learningand teaching, we were lucky enough to be the first groupof students to utilise the Cave2TM to gain a unique view ofchemistry. Following this, we completed an exciting lab activityon the oxidation of luminol. Bioluminescence is difficult todemonstrate on a practical level in the classroom, so this was avery special opportunity.

It is evident that we had an amazing time at USC over thesetwo days. The program most definitely succeeded in its aimto engage IB students in enhanced collaborative learningenvironments that provide chemistry-focused ICT extensions, and highlight study and research options available to us. We’dlike to thank Mr Buswell, Mr Melady, Ms Judith Warmerdam, and the other USC staff who contributed to giving us suchan invaluable experience. We’ve all returned to class with arenewed passion for chemistry and our study options for nextyear.

Italian Master Class plus an Invite to Pasta Night

Wow! It’s that time again! Chef Luke was welcomed by the newcohort of students who are passionate about food and want tolearn how to make great Italian dishes. There are a number ofreturn students to this activity from Terms 1 and 2, which showshow much the students enjoyed learning about Italian cuisinewith Chef Luke and Chef Jacopo from Via Italia Restaurant atMooloolaba.

Today the students learned how to make pizza dough fromscratch. The story behind a traditional Margherita pizza, as wellas the chemistry behind a successful dough, were explored.Chef Luke showed the students a slightly different method forstretching the pizza dough than in previous classes. More thanhalf the class was able to be involved in a practical way today. In most of the Master Class sessions, all students will be ableto gain hands-on experience.

Many of the return students have been using the skills theylearned in the master classes on a regular basis at home. Thisis what the Italian Master Classes are all about; developing apassion for food preparation and the skills to enable students toenjoy their passion.

Hospitality

This is an exciting week for our Year 11 Hospitality students. Many of the students are on work placement, as part of theCertificate II in Hospitality. Mrs Baldry and Mrs Toomey havebeen to visit a number of students this week and all seemto have settled in well at their respective hospitalityestablishments. The students are working front of house, socommunication and service skills will be a priority this week.

There are some Year 11 Hospitality students who are notcompleting placement this week, but must do so by the end ofTerm 3.

Mountain Creek would like to thank all of our work placementhosts for their willingness to be involved in our certificateprogram. The owners, managers and supervisors with whomwe have met have been welcoming to the students andhospitality teachers.

One of our hospitality students was offered a traineeship inhospitality on his second day of work placement. What animpression he must have made and how generous for anemployer to make such a commitment to the industry and ourschool.

USC Maths Modelling Day

How much landfill does the Sunshine Coast produce eachweek? How can I multiply four-digit numbers with only one lineof working? How do trends go viral?

These were the questions posed to ten of our students whoattended the USC Maths Modelling Challenge on Friday 21stJuly. Yasmin, Brennan, Alex, Mia, Oliver, Tiana, Jaya, Lauren,Georgia and Hope worked in teams to model one of thesesituations, with assistance from University mathematicians.Teams then presented their solutions to the group, to be in therunning to win cash prizes.

Mountain Creek’s most successful team was our trio of Year9 girls, Hope, Georgia and Lauren, who were equal winners inthe viral trends category. Although we didn’t walk away with anoverall prize, students were all enriched by the opportunity toapply their maths skills in the real world.

Developing your child’s social media scripts

By Michael Grose

As parents we teach our kids to talk politely and clearly so thatthey know how to speak to others when we’re not around. Ineffect, we give our kids social scripts to fall back on when theytalk to friends, teachers and relatives. There’s no guaranteethey’ll look an adult in the eye when they speak to them, butour discussions, reminders and lessons about manners willhopefully hold up when we’re not around.

The same applies to social media. Our conversations andlessons will prepare them to be savvy users when we’re notaround. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Bachelor of Acting

• Bachelor of Music

• Bachelor of Music Technology

• Bachelor of Musical Theatre

• Bachelor of Popular Music

• Bachelor of Music (Honours) UQ Bachelor-of-Music-Honours-

• Bachelor of Music (Honours)/ Bachelor of Arts

• Bachelor of Music (Honours)/ Bachelor of Education(Secondary)

• Bachelor of Music (Honours)/ Bachelor of Science

1. “Is this worth posting?” The relatively impersonalnature of social media means that we can postinformation and pictures with relative immunity. Alsoits immediacy means that we can do so withoutmuch thought. This means that kids need to be verycritical about what they see online. ‘Is this accurate?’and ‘Is this worth posting?’ are two valid questionschildren can ask when they read posts placed byothers.

2. “Have you taken a big breath?” A child who blurtsout everything that comes into his mind withoutthinking is sure to put plenty of people offside. ‘Thinkbefore you speak’ is the type of message that everychild should have in mind. The same applies to socialmedia. Just because they think something doesn’tmean they post it. ‘Take a big breath’ may just aboutbe the most important message to give your kidsabout social media.

3. “Do you want the Principal to see this?!” Aninvitation to a teenage birthday party posted on socialmedia is one way to get more attendees than youbargained for! The viral nature of social media meansthat kids should only post messages and photos thatthey want to be spread and read by a large audience.

4. “How does this post make you feel?” We need toteach kids that not every post needs to becommented upon and not every thought needs to beshared, particularly when they are angry. Teachingthem to walk away and then to step back in whenthey’ve calmed down is perhaps the most importantcommunication lesson of all. It is very relevant tosocial media as emotions are often the last thing onmany people’s minds when they haphazardly post amessage.

Study and School Work

With the prospect of half yearly examscoming up and the school year well underway, some students may feel the pressure ofstudy and school work more intensely inTerm Three. It is normal to feel some stress and pressure whenit comes to study and school work, however it is important thatstudents, teachers and parents know when stress becomes athreat to wellbeing and mental health. It is important thatstudents have support to help them manage their stress levelsand study in an effective and productive way. Some studentsmay also face extreme disappointment or feelings ofhopelessness if they do not get the marks they were aiming for.It is therefore important that students learn to manage failureand not let test scores seriously impact their wellbeing andsense of self-worth.

SU Qld are again running a variety of camps over the schoolholidays. SU Qld has been running quality camps for manydecades in Australia. The leaders all Volunteer and in manycases pay to be there. The quality of leadership is amazing. They have often grown up attending these camps themselvesand then when they leave school, do the training and help runthem as adults. Leader to camper ratio is kept to no more than1 leader per 4 – 5 campers. Camps generally follow a theme tomeet any sort of interest group. For the creative types, there isSMADD (Song, Music, Dance and Drama). For the tech headsthere is UBERTWEAK. There is a Footy camp as well as afishing camp to Stradbroke Island and more.

5. “How will you fix this?” Social media just like anysocial space requires kids to behave ethically andwith kindness. When kids overstep the mark andpost hurtful things then it’s fair that they fix theirmistakes, and apologise. It’s reasonable that weteach our children to act with tolerance and withempathy online, and if mean things are posted thenthey should be expected to try to repair relationshipsthrough social media, just as they should offline.
