September is National Senior Center

Month with the theme being Senior

Centers: Building Momentum! This

year marks the 75th anniversity of senior

centers having first been introduced in

New York City in 1943. From records we

have at this Center, I discovered a survey

of 550 Midland residents over the age of

60 was conducted in August 1972 to see

if there was interest in starting a Senior

Center. Sixty-six percent of those

surveyed wanted a senior center with

sewing, Bible study, eating with friends,

and card games named as the most

important activites.

The first Midland Senior Center began in

1973 through a grant from the United

Fund and the First Christian Church. The

city began supplying funds in 1975. In

1975 there were 250 members of the

Center with the First Christian Church

providing the facilities. Many community

organizations were involved with the

Center at that time including local service

clubs, banks, food stores, and Midland

College.

In a 1975 Midland Reporter Telegram

article about the Center, Director Ms.

Marion Fisher made this comment, “The

atmosphere here is one of interest,

activity and sharing—whether it’s

painting, playing games or just talking to

one another—that’s what the Center is all

about.”

I believe her statement holds true today.

Seniors are a vital part of the Midland

community with a lot to share. We are

building momentum to have a place

where all seniors can come and enjoy

connecting, learning, giving and growing.

Let’s all pledge to make the Midland

Senior Center the place to be if you are 55

years old or older.
