From the Chair
WAPCEPC
This newsletter contains several celebrations. The first is a celebration of the
life and work of Garry Prouty. I will always remember Garry's unique pres-
ence. While studying with him and Jill at the Pre-Therapy Institute in Chi-
cago, IL during the mid-1990's, I learned a healthy appreciation for what is
real and was unalterably influenced by his way of being.
Our second celebration is the announcement about the PCE 2010 Confer-
ence in Rome. PCE 2010 promises to be a spectacular event in an amazing
context. The conference committee has worked diligently to prepare a won-
derful, affordable experience. We are grateful for their continued efforts and
look forward to the launch of the conference website on June 15, 2009.
Speaking of websites, please see the latest on the World Association's web-
site developments in the piece by Beth Freire. We are very pleased with
how the re-design and upgrades are going and look forward to receiving
your feedback in early July when it will be ready for you to try out.
This newsletter clearly illustrates how much is happening in the PCE world,
as we reach the mid-point between our own biennial conferences. In particu-
lar I want to thank my fellow board members and the journal editors for
their hard work and productivity on behalf of the association. I also want to
recognise the range and diversity of events and conferences taking place na-
tionally and internationally, many of which are listed here. It really is a busy
time across the world!

Dr Garry Prouty
Garry Prouty and his wife, Jill
Dear members of the World Association for Person-
Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy and
Counseling, dear members of the Pre-Therapy
International Network, dear colleagues and
friends, I wished we had better news to tell you.
I'm sad to inform you that on May 17th 2009, Dr.
Garry Prouty passed away.
As coordinator of the Pre-Therapy International
Network, I express my personal and our professional
utmost respect for the friend, mentor and colleague
Garry was, and thank him and Jill, his wife, for the
endless inspiration and the work done.
I am convinced that his spreading his work in numer-
ous countries to numerous people, be it by writings,
be it through his presence and presentations, helped
and is still helping every day, to indeed bring better
care to the people he cared for so much. The crea-
tion of the Pre-Therapy International Network by
Jill in Amsterdam in 1995, and the annual gather-
ings in Gent, Belgium, for more than 10 years now,
with professionals coming from all over Europe, all
deeply touched and influenced by Garry and his
work, testify of this.
Inspired by one of Garry’s great examples, namely
Dr. Martin Luther King, the last question of an in-
terview we once did, was 'Garry, do you have a
dream?' Since Garry's response was so congruent
and came from so deep, I vividly remember that
this was an emotional moment for Garry as well

for the people listening. Garry told us that he would
like to see society take up the care of people who
suffer from mental illness. He wanted society to
provide people with the care one needs, since much of
their suffering, as he said, is avoidable and unnecessary,
is tragic. This thought showed Garry's drive to
dedicate his life and soul to his work. I have always
remembered what he said - and must say that I, and
many people with me, am still impressed by the way he
lived up to his dream.
He developed the work of Dr. Carl Rogers and Dr.
Eugene Gendlin – his mentor and friend – into “Pre-
Therapy”, applying it to people suffering from contact
impairment. He was Professor of Psychology and
Mental Health (Ret.) and Director of the Pre-Therapy
International Network. He was Scientific Associate of
the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and
Dynamic Psychiatry. He was a Fellow of the Chicago
Counseling, Psychotherapy and Research Center and
member of the Chicago Psychological Association. He
has served as an editorial consultant to the journal
Psychotherapy, Theory, Research and Practice as well
as to the International Journal of Mental Imagery. He
was consultant to the American, English, Austrian and
Italian client-centered journals and served on the
editorial board of the World Journal of Person-
Centered & Experiential Psychotherapies. He has been
member and elected president of the Chicago chapter
of the International Society for the Psychological
Treatments of the Schizophrenias and other Psychoses
(ISPS), an organisation he also felt well respected
in. Dr. Prouty has lectured in European clinics,
hospitals and training organizations over the past
twenty years.
He published numerous articles in several lan-
guages and wrote Prouty, G. (1994). Theoretical
evolutions in person-centered/experiential therapy.
Applications to schizophrenic and retarded psycho-
ses. New York: Praeger; translated into Japanese
and Portuguese. He recently edited Prouty, G.
(Ed.) (2008). Emerging developments in Pre-
Therapy: a Pre-Therapy reader. Ross-on-Wye:
PCCS-books and wrote – together with two close
colleagues - Prouty, G., Van Werde, D. & Pörtner,
M. (2002). Pre-Therapy: reaching contact-impaired
clients. Ross-On-Wye: PCCS Books; originally
written in German and translated into Dutch and
Czech.
He has delivered the Frieda Fromm-Reichman
Memorial Lecture at the Washington School of
Psychiatry in 2002. In 2004 he was awarded a
“Lifetime Achievement Award for Pre-Therapy” by
the Chicago Psychological Association.
Dion Van Werde, co-ordinator of the Pre-
Therapy International Network
The editors of PCEP are exploring ways to honour
the impact of Garry Prouty’s work on the field of
psychotherapy and counseling in a future issue of
the journal.

Empowerment : The politics of the helping relationship
ROME, Italy, June 30th—July 4th 2010
Aurelia Conference Center
www.pce2010.com
Dear friends and colleagues,
As you may well remember we had chosen Venice for the PCE 2010 conference. How-ever, Venice had no place that offered a self-enclosed structure.
After a long search, we finally found the Au-relia Conference Centre in Rome, which we believe offers the best cost/benefit ratio. This decision has also made it possible to lower the registration fee, an aspect of some rele-vance in the present economic turmoil.
We now ask for your help in actively promot-ing the PCE 2010 conference!
We wish to thank all our friends in the PCE 2010 International Committee, the WA Board, and Jef Cornelius-White for being so helpful and supportive during this long searching journey for a functional conference venue.
Warmest regards from the Italian Team,
Alberto, Giovannella, Mariangela and Stefania
WHY ROME?
Rome is at home with history. The legend maintains that Romulus founded Rome on seven hills by the Tiber River in 753 B.C. Since then, Rome has been a capital for politics, the Catholic religion, the arts, music and culture. Throughout its history, Rome
has managed to retain its pivotal cultural standing.
Today, Rome endures as an open-air museum, able to transport visitors on a journey of discovery through architectural marvels including the Coli-seum, the Imperial Forum, the Sistine Chapel, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain and Piazza di Spagna. Both business and leisure travellers to the City relish the company of locals, the way of life, and the moderate climate with its spring-like weather 365 days per
year.
The registration form will be available on the web site
www.pce2010.com starting from 15th June 2009

Journal News
Continued on page 10
Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies, the journal of the World Association, has recently published Issue 8.1 and Issue 8.2 is currently in press. We continue to expand the international reach of the journal with submissions from col-leagues from North America, Europe, South America, United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan. Currently we have a healthy publication queue as the number of submissions continues to grow as well as the enthusiastic response to several special issues. While the editors are pleased with this state of affairs because it is an index of the grow-ing success of the journal, it can be hard for au-thors who may have to wait as long as a year be-fore they see their accepted manuscripts in print. We apologize for this delay and appreciate your patience in this regard and assure you that your work is very important to us and will be pub-
lished.
Preparation of the special issue on focusing ori-ented psychotherapy is almost complete and ready to be placed in the publication queue. An-other special issue on diversity and the PCEP ap-proach is in preparation. We are continuing to publish the key note lectures from the Norwich Conference; four of these appeared in the most recent issue. And a review of the papers that we have received and published shows that we con-tinue to cover special topics, as well as commen-taries, theoretical papers, and book reviews. The number of empirical papers has increased as well, we hope that this trend continues and encourage authors to submit empirical studies including
qualitative case studies as well as those using quanti-
tative methodologies.
Some of you will notice that the journal is a bit longer this year, with 84 pages per issue rather than the usual 80. This is due to a more favourable con-tract with the printer and reduction in costs that en-abled us to increase the number of pages per issue. The June issue will be even longer, 96 pages, thanks to the generosity of our publisher, PCCS. The extra pages help with the publication queue. We urge our academic membership to encourage their libraries to subscribe to the EBSCO package to enhance our profile among academics and students which would do much to disseminate our ideas, increase our
membership, and insure the longevity of the journal.
We are delighted to welcome Mick Cooper as a co-editor to replace Dave Mearns. We felt that it was important to maintain a balance in representation and have a representative from the UK. Mick will be continuing the strong support that we have received from the University of Strathclyde and will bring his own unique perspective coming as he does from a relational and existential background. Mick will be joining the editors for their annual meeting in Lon-
don in July.
We would like to thank all the members of the Edi-torial Board for their continued support in reviewing papers, and recognize the contributions of our ad hoc reviewers whose time and effort is much appre-ciated. The efforts of the reviewers are highly valued

and are vital to the continued success of the journal.
Along with the rest of the PCEP community the edi-tors would like to express their sorrow at the loss of one of the members of the editorial board Dr. Garry Prouty. He made a special contribution to the development of the PCEP approach and his
presence on the board will be missed.
New Website for WAPCEPC
In early April, following our recent search for a new
website developer, the WAPCEPC
board contracted with Nicol Wistreich to create a
new website for the WA and PCEP. (See http://
netribution.co.uk and http://www.oh-ay.org/ for re-
cent examples of Nic's freelance work).
This new website will have a fresh and contempo-
rary design and will provide a dynamic interface
with the membership as well as the general public.
Members will have online access to all PCEP arti-
cles and they will also be able to edit their mem-
bership details through the website.
The website is expected to “go beta” in early July
for WA members to try it out and provide feedback
with any comments, questions or problems they en-
counter. This process can last up to a month or two,
after which the final version of the new site will be
launched to the public.
Nic has told us: "It is a great pleasure to be working
for an organisation making such a positive contribution
in its field, and it has been very interesting for me to
learn more about PCE. The website has much poten-
tial and I look forward to hearing what everyone
thinks when the new site launches over the summer."
We'll send an e-mail notification to all members when
the beta version of the site is launched, with an invita-
tion to visit the site, test and give feedback.
