From The Chair Of The BoardDear CASA Friends,

On behalf of the CASA Board of Directors and staff, I’m happy to present you our 2016-2017 annual report. Inside, you will see how busy 2017 has been for us; we remain on a strong trajectory to reach our Vision 2020 goal of providing an advocate to every child in need. Not reflected in this report, however, are two significant organizational achievements this year that are vital to sustaining this progress through 2020 and beyond.

First, we are pleased to introduce Angela Rose as our new Executive Director. Rising to the top of a thorough and deliberate national search, Angela brings many years of CASA experience, dedication and strong leadership to this role. Starting as a CASA herself more than 20 years ago, she has a deep passion and understanding for our mission and a love for our organization. We are thrilled to be working with her in the coming years as we know she will lead CASA of the Pikes Peak Region to new heights.

Second, Angela and her staff are now working from a new CASA home! In November we relocated to our newer and more spacious building at 418 South Weber Street. This move allows us to finally bring all five of our programs, previously operating in various locations across our region, under a single roof. We now have the space needed to increase our volunteer training, grow our programs, serve more children and families and reach Vision 2020.

2017 has been a year of challenge, change and progress, all necessary to keep CASA’s movement forward into the future. Because of our wonderful donors and volunteers, CASA continues to help the children in need in our communities. On behalf of these many children who have been touched by CASA of the Pikes Peak Region, we thank you for your tremendous support.

Collin was just six years old when he entered his first foster home. His CASA advocate, Karen Hilborn, remained a constant presence in his life as he endured 13 foster placements. She ultimately helped him locate family members who provided a safe, permanent, and loving home where he is thriving.

I believe that she saw potential in me that maybe other people didn’t see. So she stuck by my side and advocated for me. . . and helped me advocate for myself and helped me through a lot of stuff that was hard to deal with.”“VolunteersVolunteers are the heart of CASA, working tirelessly with the children they serve. Last year, 475 highly screened and trained community volunteers offered over 24,000 hours of time through CASA’s five programs. This represents a 13% increase in the number of volunteers over the previous year and we continue to reach out to the community with the goal of recruiting, training, and activating enough volunteers to serve every child in need.

2016-2017 Program HighlightsCASA of the Pikes Peak Region continues to strive towards Vision 2020 – to serve every child in need of an advocate by 2020. Last fiscal year, trusted and empowered advocates served 585 children, a 5% increase over the previous year, and are on track to serve incrementally more children each year until Vision 2020 is achieved. In addition to advocacy work through the Dependency & Neglect program, CASA made a life-changing impact on children and families through its other four programs, highlighted here.

DEPENDENCY & NEGLECT

Community volunteers are recruited and trained as CASA advocates who are appointed by judges to open abuse and neglect cases within El Paso and Teller Counties. These passionate volunteers work alongside the children they serve for the duration of the case, providing critical information to the court to ensure long term safety and permanency. Outcomes for abused and neglected children are vastly improved when CASA is assigned to their cases.

SUPERVISED EXCHANGE AND PARENTING TIME

CASA’s Supervised Exchange and Parenting Time (SEPT) program provides an environment that supports individual safety, accountability and healthy relationships between children and their parents who are involved in conflictive custody or domestic violence cases. Trained volunteers assist SEPT staff in overseeing supervised parenting time and supervised exchanges of children.

MILTON FOSTER CHILDREN’S FUND

This unique program helps build self-esteem and resiliency in foster children by offering a range of services and resources not provided by other local agencies. These include funding for educational needs such as tutoring and test preparation; life-skills workshops addressing budgeting, employment, and personal safety; and, enrichment activities to include music and art lessons, summer camp, and athletics participation, to name a few. Milton Foster Children's Fund (MFCF) also operates The Hanger, a boutique-style store allowing foster teens to shop for free clothing items and gain work experience.

LIFE LONG LINKS

An unduplicated service in the Pikes Peak Region, Life Long Links searches for family members of children in out-of-home placement to ensure they have continuity in relationships, information about extended family members, and long-term connections to family.

CASA administers the Children and Families in Transition (CFIT) class which educates parents about the effects of divorce on children and how to minimize conflict throughout the process.

When the initiative began, CASA served 47% of the children in need, and in 2017 the number grew to almost 70%. The Peer Coordinator model has enabled us to capitalize on our greatest asset – experienced volunteers – to increase the number of children we are able to serve.
