Newsletter No. 35 - Term 4 – Week 5 8 November 2018

From the Assistant Principal…… What a week it has been! An extra day at home, and for many of our families…a long weekend. Time waits for no one at Kalinda though and there has been plenty going on. It always fills me with pride to walk the halls and hear excited students and teachers talking about their achievements. This week, Mrs Rouda is representing Victoria at the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast. We are all looking forward to hearing her tales, she is hopeful she might have a medal to show off as well!

Visiting schools We know that our programs at Kalinda are fantastic and once again this week we are reminded that other people think so too! We have had several schools contact us lately to arrange visits to see our programs in action, as they are known to be exemplary. Recently, two teachers from The Patch came to see our Literacy and THRASS programs in action and tomorrow we are welcoming the leadership team from Montrose Primary for the second time to visit Mrs Sandra Blackwell and the amazing work she does with Grade 3/4 students in the Macqlit programs.

Performing Arts Yesterday Cheryl Henry-Wild, Paul Todd and Paul Booth took our lucky Grade 3-6 performing arts students (including Highland Dancing, Rock Band and Choir) to a schools performance of School of Rock. A picnic lunch in the city was followed by the spectacular performance and what a buzz there was on their return! The group thoroughly enjoyed the experience of a professional production (a first for many) and were full of song and inspiration when they returned. Thank you to our amazing staff once again for always being on the lookout for amazing experiences for our children.

Parent Committees As graduation looms closer, our Grade 5/6 team are once again so grateful to the army of helpers who are working tirelessly to prepare such a special night for our Graduates. We are also so appreciative to Shannon and her team for organising the fitting and ordering of our 2019 Grade 6 tops. With a change in school polo the student body voted to head in a slightly different direction for tops next year and the quick ordering turn around now will hopefully mean we have tops nice and early in the new year!

Kalinda Conversations The power of language and connection when it comes to our children is irrefutable and something as simple as sharing an anecdote from our day can be the starting point for powerful conversations in our family. A chat in the car or around the dinner table is a daily occurrence for many families but often after a busy day we get stuck on ‘what did you do today?’ which we all know, can have varying amounts of success with our children! Each Monday on our Facebook page you will notice a suggestion for a conversation starter. This week’s was “What was something that made you smile today?” Don’t forget to join in with your own answers Mums and Dads, learning about how adults navigate life’s ups and downs is great learning for our children. REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES ON SALE TOMORROW

This Sunday 11th November marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. We will be selling items for the Poppy Appeal on behalf of the Ringwood RSL from Monday 29th October, up to and including Friday 9th November. Items for sale are: Poppy Badges (small) - $1 Poppies - $2 Wristbands - $3 Key Ring - $4 Poppies - $5 Junior School Council members will come around to the classrooms every day during the week beginning 29th October, to give students the opportunity to purchase something from the tray. They will also be available for sale at the office.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT - Material Preparation I know it’s still October, but Christmas Craft will begin in the coming weeks! If you would like to be part of these popular activities please consider either coming in to Art sessions or helping out at home by preparing materials. There are lots of materials to be cut up in readiness including fabric, wire and timber and I would greatly appreciate some assistance with this huge job. If you are able to collect materials for cutting at home, please email [email protected] or leave your details at the Office. Samples and measurements will be provided. Times and dates for Art sessions will be posted closer to the time. LIBBY SHAW VISUAL ARTS TEACHER

Canteen News NEW MENU – The new menu was sent out on Monday 8th October. Please note some prices have changed. This is also available on our website under “Canteen” and “Notices & Forms”. Spare copies are available at the office. Please dispose of your old menu. The new online menu shows the “Healthy Traffic Light” system, with some areas in green, some in orange and some in red. The green writing shows foods that are healthy and can be eaten at any time. The items in orange means that it’s quite okay to have them sometimes, and the items in red are those that should only be eaten as a very special treat. You can use this as a guide for your child’s choices. FUTURE DATES: 4th December - Special Food Day – Ice Cream Day 14th December - Last day for lunch orders for 2018.

Helpers Needed If you are able to help at any time in the canteen, it would be very much appreciated. Please contact me in the canteen or leave your name at the office. We are short of volunteers and children love to see their mums, dads, or other family members helping out. JUSTINE WATSON CANTEEN MANAGER

Kalinda Wellbeing Last week we introduced three of our Key Concept posters and discussed some examples of how we might refer to theses posters when discussing certain emotions and behaviours throughout a day at school. Let’s look at our other two Key Concept posters and our Self-Mastery Checklist. “If you don’t know why you’re doing something, then don’t do it because it’s most likely the wrong thing to do.” This Key Concept is all about thinking deeper and going beyond the ‘shoulder shrug’ or “I dunno” response that we’ve all had when questioning children about the reasons behind their behaviour. Thinking deeply and discovering the true reasons why we choose to behave in certain ways can be confronting, but it is an essential part of taking responsibility for our behaviour and setting ourselves up to make stronger choices in the future.

This Key Concept is all about assisting children to pursue their personal best in everything they do. It encourages children to focus on bettering themselves, rather than comparing themselves to others. This poster can be used as a tool to discuss academic goals and achievements, sporting successes and failures and dealing with the disappointment of missing out on things such as production roles or leadership opportunities. This poster is also used when discussing who students choose to work with, and how pursuing our personal best shouldn’t change depending on who we work with.

Our Self-mastery Checklist is comprised of six questions that children can ask of themselves or can be asked by teachers. These questions will hopefully trigger a self-reflective process and will assist children in self-regulating their own emotions and behaviours. You will notice they are all closed questions, which helps children to focus and simplify the problem and identify how they can make responsible behaviour choices. This is just a quick snapshot of our key concepts and how we might use them throughout the day at school. We are loving hearing that this whole school language is making its way home and that kids are discussing these key concepts with their families. Please keep encouraging them to do so! GRADUATION DANCING Our Grade 5/6 students started their Graduation Dancing lessons today! They will be doing six lessons over the rest of this term. The Grade 5 students are learning their steps for Graduation next year, while the Grade 6 students, who started lessons last year, will be continuing through this term in readiness for their big Graduation night on Wednesday, 19th December. We would like to thank Mr Ken Marshall for once again instructing our students, not only teaching them the dance steps, but also teaching them the value of teamwork and cooperation. We’re very proud of the spirit in which the students have begun their lessons today. It’s so much fun! GRADE 5/6 TEAM
