I'd like to share with the community what professionaldevelopment our faculty and staff have been involved in thisyear. Yesterday, faculty met in their Professional LearningCommunities and began to research different areas to improveour instructional practices. Topics include but are not limited toGoogle Apps for Education, homework best practices,Responsive Classroom Techniques, and the FlippedClassroom. Teachers will research these and other topicsthroughout the year and share with their fellow colleagues inMay. On this Friday, we will spend time as a facultydeveloping our skills in Google Classroom, Classroom Culture, and Differentiation.

Last week, I mentioned that teachers use differentiation in theclassroom because it is no longer possible to reach studentsthrough direct instruction alone and I would like to share someof the wonderful strategies our faculty uses. Whether groupedhomogeneously or heterogeneously, every classroom hasstudents of varying ability. When students are given tasks thatdraw out their strengths and enable them to explore conceptsusing their multiple intelligences, they often achieve greatersuccess. Examples of activities that teachers have employedto do this include Jigsaw Strategies, Learning Centers, Reader& Writer Workshops, The Daily 5, The Daily 3, and LearningCenters. Admittedly, preparing these kinds of lessons is timeconsuming and requires a lot of work on our teachers' part;however, this is evidence of the professionalism anddedication of our faculty for your children.

Finally, I had an interesting conversation with a communitymember this week. The individual was sharing all of thewonderful things the Middle School was doing and suggestedthat wouldn't it be great to get updates from them every weekin the bulletin. We agree this is a wonderful idea and, in caseyou forgot, we do and have been sharing updates of the MiddleSchool and the Lower Schooljust remember to scroll down! But perhaps this conversation highlights a different challenge. Our weekly school bulletin can be a bit long and sometimes isnot the easiest to read on a mobile device. Last year, weasked parents to complete a survey about the bulletin and wewill share the results next week as we begin the discussion forhow we plan to improve the school bulletin experience.

Thank you and God Bless,

Middle School Update

Dear Parents,

Over the past two days, eighthgrade students participated in the mock interviewprocess. Monsignor Woy, as well as eight Middle School parents, volunteered their timeto help conduct interviews. I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore, Mrs. Hobbs,Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Waldron, Mrs. Hardin, Mrs. Determan, Mr. O'Malley, and MonsignorWoy for donating their time and expertise. Several of our interviewers remarked thatCathedral students were poised, prepared, and thoughtful in their responses. Eachinterviewer filled out a personalized feedback form for every student they interviewed. The forms have been sent home in envelopes addressed to the parents. Please taketime to review the feedback with your child.

Nextweek, Iwillconductthreeoutofschoolresume

workshop sessions for eighthgrade students.During the sessions, I will provide feedback on

resumes, hold individual conferences, and help students finalize their resume productsbefore submitting them to high schools. The sessions will be held in the ConferenceRoom (across from the Main Office) on Tuesday, October 4th, 7:158:00 a.m.;Wednesday, October 5th, 3:003:45 p.m.; and Thursday, October 6th, 7:158:00 a.m.While the sessions are optional, I encourage students to attend at least one workshop. There is no limit to the number of workshops a student may attend.

Beginning the week of October 10th, eighth grade students are invited to attendHSPT/ISEE prep sessions. The prep sessions will take place on Tuesdays,Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the same times as the resume workshops. Moreinformation on the prep sessions will be available in next week's Wednesday Bulletin. As students continue to work through the test prep book at their own pace, we hopethat these sessions will provide them with extra support.

Lower School Update

Dear Parents, We hope you can join us for our first annual Math Night on Wednesday, October 12th,6:007:30 p.m. Our theme for the event is "math connections." Families will travel to avariety of stations as you explore connections between math and the real world. Justlast night on the news, I heard that Food Lion has decided to add the word "about" totheir express checkout lines (i.e., rather than 10 items or fewer, the sign will say about10 items). Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but think about what an engaging dinnertable conversation this could spark as families weighed the pros and cons of thecompany's decision. From our youngest students who could practice their roundingskills to our oldest who could analyze a customer's purchasing decisions based on abudget, what a great reallife math example! Math connections are all around us and Iencourage you to look for opportunities to engage in a math conversation with yourchild. As I wrap up my series on Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset, I wanted to share somethoughts about the word yet. This simple word can make a huge difference as weengage our students in conversation and reflection. The way a child talks to him/herselfmakes a huge difference in developing a Growth Mindset. If they say, "This is too hard!"we can help them change it to "I can't do this yet, but I will keep trying!" As adults, wecan model this type of positivity in our own lives and when debriefing with our childrenfollowing a challenging task. As we continue throughout the school year, I hope torevisit Dweck's ideas around a Growth Mindset and share stories of success from ourstudents and teachers. Sincerely,

Msgr. Woy's Weekly Message Dear Friends,

We welcome Archbishop Lori and theArchdiocesan Filipino Community to the Cathedralthis weekend for the 6th Annual Filipino Festival. All parishioners are invited to the 2:00pm Mass thisSunday followed by a festival on the front plaza. This annual event is a wonderful celebration ofFilipino faith and culture.

Last weekend's Haiti Carnavale was a huge success! The weather was great, thecrowd of 500+ was awesome, and everyone had a great time. Donna McCann and the

many people who helped did a great job. Several people remarked that this was the bestCarnavale yet! The proceeds will help our partner parish of St. Charles Borromeo provideclassroom benches for their school. The cost of that project is $19K. Hopefully, wemade enough last Saturday to cover the cost.

There is a lovely thankyou note from seminarian Bruno Delorme in today's bulletin. How can you forget Bruno, who was with us last year while studying at St. Mary'sSeminary? Over the summer, Bruno returned to Paris to continue his studies to be amissionary priest in Southeast Asia. One of our parishioners was in Paris last Sundayand visited with Bruno. Let's keep him in our prayers as he prepares for a verychallenging life of service to the Church.

If you enter or exit the Cathedral through the north (rectory) side of the church, you cannothelp but notice the repair work on the stairs on either side of the Blessed SacramentChapel. These steps began to shift and became uneven over the past year.Unfortunately, when the steps were removed, a greater degree of deterioration was foundin the supporting structure than anticipated. The repair will take longer than planned andwill be more costly ($60K)! Thanks for your patience as we continue this 50year repairproject.

Speaking of repair, you may have noticed that the processional candles we use at Masshave been missing the past month. One of the torches was broken and both are in needof refinishing. The cost estimate to repair and refinish both is $750. If you or anyone youknow is interested in underwriting some or all of the cost, please let me know.

Next Sunday at the 9:30 Mass, we will celebrate the "Rite of Welcoming" for a numberof baptized adults who are seeking reception into our Catholic faith throughthe RCIA (Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults). This is a rite that we will celebratenumerous times in the course of the year since we are now accepting candidates forformation as Catholics whenever the Holy Spirit leads them to us. Do you know anyonewho might be interested in being a Catholic? Do you know a friend or family memberlooking for a church home? Why not ask them to consider being a Catholic? Call ChrisMcCullough, Fr. Andrew, or me for details on the RCIA program.

Finally, Bishop Madden's next prayer walk will be this Tuesday at St. Ambrose Church,5402 Park Heights Avenue. There will be a light supper in the rectory at 5:30pm followedby prayer in the church at 6:00pm. The walk will conclude by 7:30pm. There is no needto preregister and offstreet parking is available.

Have a Good Week!Msgr. Woy
