AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal Congratulations to our Interschool Team on their fantastic effort at last week’s Interschool Sports Carnival in which Wattle Grove PS came first overall for the fourth consecutive year. Apart from some outstanding team efforts, we also had some very successful individual performances. Congratulations to these children for their tremendous efforts. In addition to the many excellent displays of athletic skills, it was wonderful to see many fine examples of good sportsmanship and friendship. Many thanks to Mr Sherlock and Mrs Oliver for their hard work in preparing our team for this event and to the staff and parents who assisted on the day. Thank you also to the many parents who supported the children throughout the day. Your cheering made a big difference. Students from Year 6 across the Darling Range Learning Community have competed in the interschool academic competition ‘My School Rules’ throughout the term. This has been an excellent opportunity for the children to use their knowledge in a variety of learning areas. The Grand Final was conducted last night with Wattle Grove coming first for the fifth consecutive year. Congratulations to all the Year 6 children who participated in this competition. You all did an amazing job and can be very proud of your outstanding efforts. Many thanks to Mrs Lowther and Mr Sanderson for coaching the teams throughout this series. NAPLAN results for 2019 have now been published and all parents of Year 3 and 5 children have received their child’s results. The overall school results have been extremely positive with the school achieving above expected results in 7 of the 10 assessment domains with a high percentage of students achieving in the top 20%. This is an excellent outcome. Continued performance, such as this, is as a result of the whole school strategies being implemented, the consistency in teaching practice, the focus by the children to give 120% and the commitment by everyone to work together to provide the children with the best possible educational opportunities. On Tuesday, it was wonderful to see so many parents across the school participating in their child’s Learning Journey. This was an excellent opportunity for the children to explain to parents their STEM Projects and some of the learning activities that they have completed throughout the term. This forms a valuable aspect of reporting to parents on student progress. During my visits to the classrooms, I saw so many wonderful examples of STEM construction which may have looked simplistic but which had required a significant amount of skill in design, creative and critical thinking. 26th September 2019 The Official Newsletter of Wattle Grove Primary School Term 3, Issue 15 Interschool Sports IMPORTANT DATES September 27 Last Day of Term 3 October 14 Students First Day Back to School - Term 4 Dance commences 17 Pre Kindy Playgroup First Day 18 Music, Student Rep & Board Award Assembly 23 Student Fete @ 1pm 24 Pre Kindy Playgroup Early close every Tuesday at 2.30pm School Security 1800 177777 9264 4771 9264 4632 My School Rules NAPLAN 2019 Learning Journeys Learning Journeys

At Wattle Grove Primary School, we have many students with various medical conditions. This includes students with severe allergies. We have recently had a number of students diagnosed with severe nut allergies. Individual class teachers will discuss this with their class, however, we seek parent assistance to be mindful of allergies when packing school lunches. Your assistance is greatly appreciated by the school community. This is also a timely reminder to parents to ensure that their child’s medical conditions and action plans are updated annually with a copy provided to the school.

During Term 4, our whole school Health focus will be on Protective Behaviours. Lessons will focus on continuing to support our students to develop strategies to promote personal safety and resilience. Topics will cover ways of being safe and feeling safe. Wattle Grove Primary school has a commitment to the health and safety of each and every student and believe these lessons provide students with the skills and knowledge required to promote personal safety and resilience.

The demonstrations and explanations of roller coasters, ferris wheels, catapults, insulated lunch boxes, and many more were highly complex and showed a great understanding by the children of the lengthy processes involved in the creation of everyday objects. What a fantastic celebration of student learning. Thank you to the many parents who attended and for the positive feedback you have provided to your children and to their teachers.

As you are aware, our Dancing Lessons commence next term for all year levels from Kindy to Year 6. These are always a lot of fun with the children learning so many different dances and developing their skills in dance movement. This year, we have also organised for Humphrey’s Dance School to provide Dancing Lessons for parents!! These will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 1.30-2.30pm commencing in Week 2. This will be a wonderful opportunity for parents to have some fun but to also learn some dances in preparation for the Presentation Dance Parties at the end of the year. So if you are interested, please return the Dance Notice issued yesterday together with your $31.50 The first 70 parents to respond will be able to participate. Parents will have the opportunity to see their children in action and to join them in the dance routines at their Presentation Dance Parties at the end of the year. Have a safe and wonderful holiday and we’ll see everyone back at school on Monday, 14 October, 2019

Last week, a number of children from Room 22 were invited to Scitech for the Science Talent Search Award Ceremony conducted by STAWA (Science Teachers Association of WA). This is a statewide science competition with many schools from around the state participating. All the children in Room 22 submitted their entries and each one was of a very high calibre. Wattle Grove Primary School competed extremely well in this competition with Alex and Gagan awarded the Young Scientist of the Year Award in the primary category for their outstanding Tsunami Defence presentation. Annalisa and Ayala also took home Finalist awards for their presentation on Left and Right Handedness and Diya for her presentation of a Recycled Flower Pot. Many thanks to Mr Sanderson for his outstanding work with these children and hopefully we’ll have more classes involved next year.

Rooms 6 and 9 put a spin on the well known fairy tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. They presented a catchy poem called ‘Little Red’. The children have been focusing on poetry throughout the term and knew that everyone would enjoy hearing them recite a poem. All children spoke with great expression and looked wonderful dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, trees, Grandma and, of course, that sneaky Big Bad Wolf. What a fun and engaging assembly. HappenesHappenesHappenesHappenes Hi my name is Happenes and I am in Room 17 this year. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary School for two years and this will be my third. My mum and dad are from Burundi, Africa. We came to Australia in 2007 when I was one-year-old. I have four brothers and four sisters. Two of my brothers and one sister attends Wattle Grove Primary School. My hobbies at school are playing all kinds of sports but my favourite is netball. A hobby I have outside of school is drawing. I really enjoy drawing. Outside of school, I attend Grace Life Church every Sunday. My favourite part of being a student at Wattle Grove Primary School is being a Student Representative. I really like extra responsibility and being on duty. Helping others is something I enjoy doing. Lining up classes is fun because we get to play games and get the students to behave properly and follow the Wattle Grove Way.

RebeccaRebeccaRebeccaRebecca I have been at Wattle Grove Primary since 2018. My first teacher was Mr Eaves in Year Five. My Mum and Dad were born in Juba, a place in South Sudan. I have five sisters and two brothers. My favourite thing to do is drawing. I like to draw Anime or just simple animals. I have enjoyed my time at Wattle Grove and I particularly like: • Making new friends who respect each other and like to have fun. • Drawing pictures for little kids to make them happy • Learning new things in class and working hard. During my time as a Student Representative, I would like to help the school organise more fund raising events to help raise money for new library books. I would also like to help create some games for the younger students to play during recess and lunch.

The students of Year 5 were fortunate enough to take part in a ‘careers incursion’ on Monday. We were visited by a number of adults from our local community, who talked about their role within their interesting careers. The students learnt why they decided to make their career choice, how they got into the role, and what the job involves. We heard from Firemen, a Nurse, an Engineer, Criminal Psychologist and someone in marketing and advertising. We would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers who gave up their time. Who knows what careers our current year 5’s may decide to do in the future? Mrs McIlwraith

It was a great two days spent competing in long distance running, long jump, turbo javelin, division races and team games. The children from Wattle Grove displayed amazing sportsmanship and their behaviour across the two days was to be commended. All athletes competed to a very high standard, which saw Wattle Grove declared as the overall winner of the carnival.
