I certainly look forward to working with parents, staff and our students in what promises to be an evenul and successful academic year. It was wonderful to see the boys return to the College last week, happy to see their friends and teachers, and simply happy to be at Marcellin. It is obvious that the boys love their school and that gives me great inspiraon and joy. Our Theme for 2019 comes from the Leer of James: “I will show you my faith by my acons.” The choice of this theme is meant to inspire the boys to live out their faith in a very real way; to be people who are just, compassionate, empathec, trustworthy, loving and forgiving to all with whom they come into contact in their everyday lives. This theme will be incorporated into all we do at Marcellin this year including our Masses and Assemblies and how we relate to each other in all our acvity both within the classroom and on the sporng field. I hope and pray that you will also reinforce this theme with your son in and around your home. Our Annual Improvement Plan for 2019 is focused on the professional learning of our teachers in order to build their capacity and further upskill them in the most contemporary pedagogy. Specifically, we will be focusing on Universal Design For Learning - Differenaon, Literacy and Data analysis. We have an excellent teaching staff at Marcellin who are energised and keen to improve their pracce. I am confident that our professional learning plan will result in them being able to further enhance your sons learning in the classroom. MARCELLIN COLLEGE RANDWICK

6 February 2019 | Term 1, Week 2

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to 2019 at Marcellin College. I certainly look forward to working with parents, staff and our students in what promises to be an eventful and successful academic year. It was wonderful to see the boys return to the College last week, happy to see their friends and teachers, and simply happy to be at Marcellin. It is obvious that the boys love their school and that gives me great inspiration and joy.

Our Theme for 2019 comes from the Letter of James: “I will show you my faith by my actions.” The choice of this theme is meant to inspire the boys to live out their faith in a very real way; to be people who are just, compassionate, empathetic, trustworthy, loving and forgiving to all with whom they come into contact in their everyday lives. This theme will be incorporated into all we do at Marcellin this year including our Masses and Assemblies and how we relate to each other in all our activity both within the classroom and on the sporting field. I hope and pray that you will also reinforce this theme with your son in and around your home.

Our Annual Improvement Plan for 2019 is focused on the professional learning of our teachers in order to build their capacity and further upskill them in the most contemporary pedagogy. Specifically, we will be focusing on Universal Design For Learning - Differentiation, Literacy and Data analysis. We have an excellent teaching staff at Marcellin who are energised and keen to improve their practice. I am confident that our professional learning plan will result in them being able to further enhance your sons learning in the classroom. Nevertheless, it is also incumbent upon the boys to apply themselves seriously to their studies, work cooperatively with their teachers and act upon the feedback given to them. The 2019 Annual Improvement Plan can be viewed on the College website.

During the recent holiday period a number of improvements were made at the College. Amongst them, solar panelling on the rooftop of the Marist Centre and ice-water bubblers. Our estimates are that the solar panelling will not only reduce our electricity costs, but will also reduce the carbon footprint of the College. Similarly, providing ice-water coolers for the boys will mean they can refill their drink bottles rather than purchasing ice cold water in plastic bottles that so often end up as landfill or polluting our oceans. I explained to the boys at our assembly last week that such measures as these are not only cost effective and advantageous to us as a community, but are examples of us putting our faith into action in terms of our responsibility to be stewards of creation.

I do hope you have taken the time to read my commencement letter which was sent in the week prior to school starting. This letter outlines a number of expectations I have for the year as well as significant and compulsory dates for 2019. If you haven’t yet had the chance to do so, the letter can be viewed on the College website.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at our upcoming ‘Meet and Greet’ evening on Friday 22 February and wish you every blessing in the year ahead.

God Bless,

From the Assistant Principal

Welcome back to the 2019 school year. A warm welcome to our new students and their families that have joined Marcellin this year. We have had a great start to the year with Year 7 starting on Wednesday 31 January and familiarising themselves with the College. I would like to congratulate them on their quick adaptation to High school. A special thank you to our Year 7 staff for their work in preparing for Year 7 and the Peer support students who will continue to support Year 7 as part of their induction.

Student DiaryAll students have received a College Diary. As we return to the routine of school, we encourage our boys to think ahead and be organised. We do know that boys especially, thrive on routine. The College Diary is an essential tool, which supports our boys to be organised, it assists them to develop good study habits and allows parents to view the school activities. Diaries may contain positive notes from teachers and comments expressing concern about a range of matters. Parents and the Homeroom Teacher are required to sign the College Diary each week, which will provide an adequate platform for each boy to be monitored and supported at school.

Guidelines for the use of College Diary• All students at MCR are to use the official College Diary. This Diary must be brought to school each day and taken to every lesson. Teachers will make use of the Diary to comment and encourage students, and communicate with parents. If a student leaves their diary at home, they must see their Year Coordinator at the beginning of the day for a Diary replacement sheet.

• Each student is expected to take pride in his Diary, to respect it as important property and as part of official school records. Equal respect must be shown to the Diaries of other students.

• Only school related information and /or important events or appointments are to be entered in the Diary. Graffiti and stickers are not to be placed in any part of the Diary.

• If the Diary is defaced or damaged, a new one is to be purchased from the Student Services office.

• Loss of the Diary is an important matter and is to be brought to the immediate attention of theHomeroom teacher. Approval for the new purchase must first be obtained from the student’s Year Coordinator.

• All details of homework, revision, assignment and project work, home study and learning exercises are to be entered in the Diary each day, as they are set.

• If a student needs to leave a class for any reason, the Diary must be taken with him showing an explanation from the classroom teacher.

• The Diary is seen as an important tool of communication between parents and teachers. Parents/carers are invited and encouraged to communicate with staff as the need arises, in the spaces provided in the Diary.

• Parents/carers of students in Years 7-12 are to sign the Diary at the end of each week and to make a comment where necessary.

We thank all parents for their support and partnership in the Education of their sons.

Five period day2019 has seen the introduction of a new timetable structure. The student timetable has changed from a six period day to a five period day. Each lesson on most days are one hour in length. Research and experience has informed us that a five period day has many educational benefits for our boys. Lessons finish at 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, however the end of day is 3.15pm. This allows students and teachers opportunities at the end of the day to speak and or confer with any questions, completion of work, concerns etc. Students may be asked to remain until 3.15pm on any given day without notice. This timing does not interfere with any of

the school buses as they are all scheduled to arrive from 3.15pm onwards.

I pray that the year ahead is one of success, challenge and great learning for our boys. I trust that the values of our Catholic faith and our Marist traditions are well aligned with all our own values and aspirations.

VISITING THE COLLEGE?

A reminder to parents and guardians that if you need to enter the College grounds for any

reason, including a meeting with a teacher, you must sign in at the Front Office where you will be issued with a visitors pass. If you are picking your son up after school, he will need to meet

you outside the school gates.

Welcome to the 2019 Academic. Whether this is your son’s first year at Marcellin College or your final year, it is important that each boy starts the year with some clearly defined goals around their learning.

We know that successful is best achieved in an environment that is well- structured, where boys have a regimented study routine at home, with clear parameters about study, and high expectations.

Parents play a critical role in the development and maintenance of an effective study routine at home. However, creating an environment that is conducive to effective study and ensuring that students are on task while at home can be an extremely difficult task for parents. Below are some suggestions to help get the year started well.

Set up the academic year, the way you want it to continue.

• Use a diary and write things down at the end of every lesson.• Use a calendar. Google calendar is free and is linked to your school email account. Add your assessment to the calendar and set

reminders at least 2 weeks before the due date. Students can share their calendar with their parents. • Download your assessment calendar from the College website. (Week 4) • Add important dates to the above mentioned calendar. • Pack your bag the night before. • Get enough sleep - this is critical to your son’s organisation! Go to bed earlier and set your alarm 15 minutes before you need to get

up. • Avoid technology before bed. Stay away from your device (phone and computer) for at least an hour before your bedtime. • Create a study plan. This is a good way for parents and guardians to stay in touch with routine. The most effective way to create

a study plan that is sustainable is to add your non-negotiables to the the plan before you start. Study time is flexible and can be adapted to suit your routine, but it simply won’t if study is neglected altogether.

Important Information regarding assessment at Marcellin

Each year group will receive an assessment handbook, detailing all relevant assessment information for the 2019 Year. This booklet outlines the College policy and processes regarding assessment. Please read this booklet carefully as there are some important changes that have taken place regarding Illness Misadventure. An assessment calendar will also be accessible via the College website from Week 4 this term.

General information: • All assessments will be outlined in the College handbook made available via the College website. • Students will also receive an assessment notification at least 2 weeks before the task is due. • It is expected that all task are returned within two weeks of the date of submission. (Unless there are extenuating

circumstances) • It is expected that students will receive individual feedback for each assessment task, (where appropriate), along with

collective feedback.• Late submission: It is the student’s responsibility to follow procedures for submitting tasks. A penalty applies for late

submission - students will lose 20% of the mark normally awarded for every calendar day late (for example, the loss of 80% of the mark awarded if a student submits work 4 days late).

• Illness, misadventure – absence on the day of a task. The school assessment cannot compensate for factors such as extended illness, misadventure or domestic problems that may have affected a student’s performance throughout the course. It is the student’s responsibility to fulfil all requirements specified in the assessment schedule, including those tasks given during the student’s absence.

• If it is not possible to submit an assessment task on the set date due to illness or misadventure, students should submit an electronic copy of the task to the relevant KLA coordinator. The student will then submit the hard copy task, along with an Illness Misadventure Form and accompanying documentation on the FIRST day back at school.

• All documentation should be presented to the relevant KLA Coordinator before the first period and then forwarded to the Director of Learning for a determination.

• If a student is absent without adequate cause, in the judgment of the School, a mark of “zero” will be recorded.• Where the absence is approved on the grounds of illness, misadventure or accident exist, then the following provisions

may apply: -An ‘alternate due date’ may be granted. Students should always be prepared to complete the task on the first day back at school. An alternative date may include: -A designated make-up date in an examination block. -Following the student’s last examination -After school on a Wednesday afternoon (Academic makeup.) -On a Thursday afternoon during the allocated sport time -A ‘Substitute Task’ may be given. The determination of a like task or alternative task will be made by the KLA coordinator in the interests of equity and fairness for all students

Best wishes for the academic year ahead.

Dear parents,

The NSW State election will take place on Saturday, 23 March 2019. The key election issues raise by Sydney Catholic Schools with political parties are:

• A major commitment from all political parties to significantly increase capital investment (money to build new schools and expand existing schools) especiallyin areas of growth and consolidation in line with extensive commitment to State education.

• Ensure that current level of recurrent funding (total government contribution which supports the ongoing operating expenses of schools) is maintained from the State government.

• Access and equity to the delivery of high-quality early childhood education and care services at mainstream school sites, with less regulated rules, and a simplification of the countless rules and regulations that govern pre-schools.

If you have an opportunity, you may like to raise these issues with candidates in your local electorate.

Warmest regards, Dr Dan White

World Youth Day 2019

An incredibly successful World Youth Day 2019 has just concluded in Panama, Central America.

The event was attended by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world.

Marcellin College were well represented, with five of our students joining a strong contingent from Sydney Catholic Schools.

Paolo Tecson and Jett Lara from Year 12, were joined by John Hanoun and Amadeus Kanginan from Year 11, and Ari Tjandra from Year 10.

The boys had an amazing time, and were wonderful ambassadors for our College. Along the way the boys visited a very chilly Washington DC and visited some of the famous monuments in the city.

A new member of our staff this year, and MCR old boy, Mr Sebastian Szafjanski, also attended World Youth Day, accompanying students from his previous school, Holy Cross College, Ryde.

The theme of the gathering was “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word”. (Lk 1:38)

It was announced that Portugal will be the location of the next World Youth Day in 2022.

Students once again rotated through various events in age their age groups. The activities included Water Volleyball, Tug ‘o’ War, Mixed Games and the 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke events. The championship swimming events were held in front of the school community and some fast swims were recorded, including four broken records.

MCC Sport

Round 7 of the MCC Summer season will be held this Thursday with an away fixture against Holy Cross College Ryde. A reminder that the washout round will be used next Thursday (Week Three) where we will face Marist College Kogarah. We wish our teams well as they look to cement semi-final berths.

The College Swimming squad will be selected this week with training due to begin next Monday morning February 11 at Botany Pool. Students selected in the squad will be given a note explaining the training program in the lead up to the MCC carnival.

This Thursday students in Year 7 – Year 9 will compete in internal Cross Country trials as we look to put a squad together for the MCC carnival held towards the end of Term One. Students in Years 10 – 12 and those currently involved in a summer MCC team will have an opportunity to trial for the squad when training begins.

Internal Sport

Students in Years 10 – 12 will begin free choice sport this Thursday. Notes will be distributed this week explaining the details of each sport including any associated costs. This year students have already selected sports for all four terms so any costs involved will cover your son for the year.

Special Achievements

Billy Zavetsanos in Year 8 is competing in the Australian Triathlon Championships and is currently sitting in 4th place after two events. The championships continue in March where Billy will travel to Tasmania for the next round of races. Billy will also compete in the NSW All Schools Triathlon competition later this month. We wish Billy all the best in his upcoming races. Blaine Potter in Year 11 was recently selected in the U/16’s Australian Oz Tag Tagaroos squad. Congratulations Blaine and good luck at the competition later in the year. Thomas Byrnes in Year 12 recently made his first grade debut for the UNSW Cricket club in the NSW Premier Cricket competition. I have also included a flyer which explains the process for registering for NSWCCC events. I also placed this in the final newsletter of 2018. A reminder that these competitions are for athletes who have extensive experience in the specific sport. If you have any questions regarding NSWCCC registration please visit https://www.csss.nsw.edu.au/nswccc-home.aspx or send me through an email.

We look forward to another competitive and successful sporting season for the College.
