‘MDM (Meter Data Management) application automates smart meter data management business processes. Its comprehensive set
of tools enables utilities to address traditional utility use cases, such as meter-to-cash billing data, as well as emerging use cases that
leverage register, interval, and time-of-use IoT device data to support a variety of mission-critical enterprise applications.
MDM application acquires meter data (Load profile, Consumption data, Demand data, Meter status, Events, Tampers information,

THE CHALLENGE
The energy produced should be accurately and reliably measured and reported on and all metering data should be auditable and comply with regulatory requirements. Eskom employs metering, measurement and an EMDAS (Energy Metering and Data Acquisition System) at the generation plants to fulfill this requirement.Each power station has its own individual needs as there may be legacy equipment and systems already in place. It may not be in the plant’s best interest to replace all legacy devices and several aspects should be reviewed for the change-over process and requirements between systems.
THE COMPANY
Eskom is a state owned enterprise in South Africa and is involved in the electricity supply industry from generation, transmission through to distribution and sales. Eskom’s DuvhaPower Station is situated in Witbank, Mpumalanga, and is one of the 11 Base Load Stations with an installed capacity of 3,600 MW with an average production of 22,798 GWh over the last three years.
THE SOLUTION
iST (Integrators of Systems Technology) offered Duvha Power Station an EMDAS covering both historical data reporting and real-time visualization of power generated or consumed in the plant. This solution had been designed around the metering best practices accumulated in iST’s experience in metering of over 30 years in this specialized field.Our device agnostic approach and integration skillsets enable us to directly interface to a variety of metering devices or other 3rd party systems, depending on the best-fit solution for the client.

The solution deployed addressed the requirements for an EMDAS system applying the latest available technology and future proofing the EMDAS system at Duvha.
The picture below shows the real-time monitoring for each unit and Station Boards, including single line diagrams with power, voltage, currents and power factors from each metering point.
The picture below shows the real-time reading accuracy comparisons. The analogue transducers are utilised for control and should be verified to timeously identify any possible corrective actions required.

Eskom is short of generation capacity, particularly over peak periods. While possible to meet reserve margin needs with costly gas turbine generation plant, another more preferable initiative based on voluntary customer load curtailment (NegaWatt generation) was needed.
We developed and implemented a Demand Response Solution (DRS) for Eskom in 2007 as a mechanism to incentivise customers and enable them to reduce load over critical periods.
• Apart from being the cleanest energy source available, the VPS can be deployed faster (under 10 seconds)
• Significant cost saving over gas turbine generation plant
• Substantial growth in the number of MW under VPS control is anticipated over the next few years

• A Virtual Power Plant is a network of decentralized, Small
/medium-scale power resourcing units such as Wind farms ,
Solar parks , Micro-Hydel, Batteries as well as flexible power
consumers of main electricity grid .
• The interconnected units are dispatched through the IT based
central control room of the Virtual Power Plant but nonetheless
remain independent in their operation and ownership.
• The objective of a Virtual Power Plant is to relieve the load on
the grid by smartly distributing the power generated by the
individual units during periods of peak load or/and as per the
load dispatch schedule of Utility.
• IT based VPP control room is supported by following to
maintain the system day to day to meet the demand of utility:
• AMI (IOT) based infrastructure to acquire the meter
data of each power generator as well as monitor the
same
