Good News from St. John's June 2016 From the Rector No Days Off We are now in the Season After Pentecost. Since the start of the new church year we have moved at a measured pace through the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, and Easter. We have awaited and then celebrated the reality of God's Incarnation. We have spent time allowing God to reveal that meaning to all of us. We have spent time reflecting upon our own response to that reality, and then we have celebrated the reality that through death comes new life, new life that is given to us through the power of God's Holy Spirit. So now we have entered into the remainder of the church year. 27 weeks where we are blessed with the opportunity to put our faith into action. Our daily walk in faith is reflected in the Season After Pentecost. In reality, the Incarnation, the Crucifixion, Easter and Pentecost all took place thousands of years ago. In reality, every day of our natural lives has been lived in this Season After Pentecost. It is a season, a lifetime if you will, where we are given the opportunity to respond to the Good News that has been given to us, the Good News that God has so loved the world that He has given us His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ; and it is through Christ's death and resurrection that we are able to see that God's promise of eternal life is more powerful than the death that we all one day will experience. God calls us to respond to this Good News by living lives of love: love of God and love of neighbor. It is in the Season After Pentecost that we live such lives. Not just in the 27 weeks of this year, but actually in the whole season that makes up the reality of our lives. Each and every day we are called to love. Each and every day. Good News from St. John's

June 2016

From the Rector

No Days Off

We are now in the Season After Pentecost. Since the start of the new church year wehave moved at a measured pace through the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany,

Lent, and Easter.

We have awaited and then celebrated the reality of God's Incarnation. We have spent time allowing God toreveal that meaning to all of us. We have spent time reflecting upon our own response to that reality, andthen we have celebrated the reality that through death comes new life, new life that is given to us through thepower of God's Holy Spirit. So now we have entered into the remainder of the church year. 27 weeks wherewe are blessed with the opportunity to put our faith into action.

Our daily walk in faith is reflected in the Season After Pentecost. In reality, the Incarnation, the Crucifixion,Easter and Pentecost all took place thousands of years ago. In reality, every day of our natural lives hasbeen lived in this Season After Pentecost. It is a season, a lifetime if you will, where we are given theopportunity to respond to the Good News that has been given to us, the Good News that God has so lovedthe world that He has given us His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ; and it is through Christ's death andresurrection that we are able to see that God's promise of eternal life is more powerful than the death that weall one day will experience.

God calls us to respond to this Good News by living lives of love: love of God and love of neighbor. It is inthe Season After Pentecost that we live such lives. Not just in the 27 weeks of this year, but actually in thewhole season that makes up the reality of our lives.

Each and every day we are called to love.

Each and every day.

There are no days off in this Season After Pentecost.

Assistant Rector Message

As I said in my sermon the last Sunday in May, I am so excited thatwe have Vacation Bible School June 13-17th. We have 40 childrensigned up, 20 of whom are from the surrounding neighborhood. As Isaid they will be strangers to us and us strangers to them, so its time

to exercise every bit of our hospitable muscles! The Sunday following VBS week, thechildren and their families will join us for VBS Sunday at the 10:30 service. We willincorporate music from the week and the church will remain decorated.

The theme for VBS is ReNew: The Green VBS, Grow in Faith. Have Fun. Change theWorld. It is a wonderful curriculum that is focused on learning how to be good stewards ofthe earth and care for ourselves, our family, friends, those in need in our community andthe world.

As part of the week we have a couple garden beds in the back of the church property nearthe cell tower. The children will fill the beds with various vegetable and herb plants and wewill maintain these. Thank you Bruce Hall and Rosemary Ferguson for your hard work anddedication to this project for our children and community!

It is really exciting to see weeks like VBS go from an idea to an actualized experience andit would not be possible without the help of so many amazing people from our church andfrom the community. In keeping with main message of the week, we have reached out topeople in our community and neighborhood to build partnerships to help us along the wayand during the week of VBS.

We have a few volunteers who are local community leaders and advocates in Roseville, including Colleen Hendon and her daughter Kayli who are advocates for Autism Awareness.Colleen is the manager of both Learning Express Toys in Roseville and regularly donateseducational toys and supplies for our ministry with children. Her daughter Kayli is 21 and ison the Autistic Spectrum. Kayli (Kiki) has an amazing singing voice and will help us learnour music and will be assisting her mom, Colleen, with her projects for the children duringVBS. Emily Rhoades is a freshman at Sierra College, who attended St. John's School inthe past. Having Down Syndrome herself, she is a strong advocate for special needsawareness and full inclusion along with her friend Kiki. Emily will be helping Deanna Frazeeand Stephania Kogut with our 3 year olds in the nursery during VBS, as early childhoodeducation is Emily's focus in her education. I know both Emily and Kiki from my experiencewith them in my music therapy practice.

Along with these community advocates we have reached out to the Roseville UtilityExploration Center and 2 of their staff will be joining us on Tuesday during VBS to provideand experience for the children that will teach about how we can help our community byunderstanding how our utilities work and how to be better stewards of energy.

We also have Ruby Fidler, who is a licensed Zumba instructor. She will be joining us onThursday to do Zumbatomic (Kid's Zumba) with the children as part of the week's emphasison caring for our vessels.

Please keep the volunteers and children in your thoughts and prayers as we enter into thisamazing week together. Know that during VBS week (June 13-17) the church will becompletely engaged in VBS activities from 9-noon. Therefore if you need to meet with

Senior Warden Message Welcome to June. This is the time of year that parents, such as myself, love and fear. School is ending and with that comes kids seven days aweek. Technically, most of us have our kids seven days a week already, but that extra 7 or 8 hours Monday through Friday can be tough. Equallydifficult during the summer months, is the fact that many of us see extra

activities (sports, summer camps, etc.) that require transporting kids here, there, andeverywhere. If that weren't enough, some parents are lucky enough to fit in a summervacation too. That being said, a relaxing summer is not always what we may experience. However, I doubt any of us would actually give up these coming months and the manymemories they hold in store. Whether you have kids, grandkids, both, or neither, I hopethat summer presents you ample opportunities to enjoy the soon to be longer days.

From the Music Director:

As the choir winds down for the season, I feel we can reflect on a greatyear. The adult choir has grown and improved so much, all through theirvery hard work in and out of rehearsal. I am so pleased with thebeautiful choral sound that they have been creating as they sing theiranthems! The worship team is working hard and making lovely music as

always, and I feel like the collaboration between the choirs and worship team is reallyenlivening and enriching the service to the glory of God. I am always thrilled when we havethe opportunity to have groups across our music program collaborate! We are privileged tohave many talented musicians who are willing to share their gifts in the congregation, and Ihope that number will grow and grow. If you have a musical talent to share, please talk tome or email me at [email protected] so I can assist you in getting involved.

The Children's Choir has been wonderful. They are a vivacious group with so many

Page 5: from St. John's Good News · understanding how our utilities work and how to be better stewards of energy. We also have Ruby Fidler, who is a licensed Zumba instructor. She will be

excellent ideas, and I truly enjoy working with them. We have sung anthems of all differentstyles and they approach each with such enthusiasm. One way that the children mayconsider to further their musical training and have lots of fun would be to attend a musiccamp, such as those offered by the Northern California Children's Chorus. I will assist atthe "Summer Sing" camp and I know it will be a fantastic time. For more infosee: www.norcalchildrenschorus.org.

We are already planning our anthems for next season and you can count on ourgroups bringing you music to lift you up and bring you closer to God .I am also lookingforward to teaching and learning new songs with the children in Vacation Bible School thissummer.

We will meet onTuesday, July 26 to discuss The Book of Strange New Things by MichelFaber; a unique blend of the sci-fi, spiritual reflection, relationship genres. It begins withPeter, a devoted man of faith, as he is called to the mission of a lifetime, one that takeshim galaxies away from his wife, Bea. Peter becomes immersed in the mysteries of anastonishing new environment, overseen by an enigmatic corporation known only as USIC.His work introduces him to a seemingly friendly native population struggling with adangerous illness and hungry for Peter's teachings-his Bible is their "book of strange newthings." But Peter is rattled when Bea's letters from home become increasingly desperate:typhoons and earthquakes are devastating whole countries, and governments arecrumbling. Bea's faith, once the guiding light of their lives, begins to falter. Suddenly, aseparation is measured by an otherworldly distance, and defined both by one newlydiscovered world and another in a state of collapse. The trials of Peter and Bea lay bare aprofound meditation on faith, love tested beyond endurance, and our responsibility to thoseclosest to us.
