*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP* From Our Deaconess Resources Every once in a while I am asked for resources on prayer and devotionals, so this month I thought I would share some of my favorite resources. These are books, cd’s, applications, and websites… all have been favorites of mine through the years and have helped my spiritual life grow. It is my prayer that they are beneficial to you also! Do you have a favorite resource? Please share!

• Psalms for Praying. Nan C. Merrill – Every commentary on the Book of Psalms has had to face the issue that many of these prayers commemorate and celebrate wrath and vengeance. What is needed is not ingenious exegetical rationalization of ancient texts, but the kind of transformation into a work of piety and art that is provided here. Addressed are the needs of a world seeking to counter individual and societal injustices by a global peace born of personal peace through prayer and practice. In short, here is the Book of Psalms recast in the light of the continuing revelation and evolution of the authentic religious spirit of the scriptures.

• Celtic Daily Prayer. Prayers and reading from the Northumbria Community.

The Ancient Paths of Northumbria in northeastern England have been trod by generations of men and women who loved God and followed Jesus, bringing faith, hope, and love to vast numbers of people. Today, the Northumbria Community remains a living expression of this monastic, contemplative stream of the faith, and the perennial need to make that faith relevant to the world.

"Celtic Daily Prayer" is the fruit of the spiritual life of a remarkable community. Its liturgies, prayers, and meditations are drawn from a deep well of spiritual experience that transcends fashion, culture, and denomination. Blending prayer and praise and building upon the ancient wisdom of traditional Celtic Christianity, this prayer book is extraordinarily fresh. At the heart of

[8]

the life of the Northumbria Community, as well as this book, lies the Daily Office -- morning, noon, and evening prayers and a monthly cycle of meditations for individual or communal use each day. With words drawn from sources such as St. Patrick's Breastplate, Teresa's Bookmark, Columba's Blessing, and the Psalms, this cycle of daily prayers reflects the essential rhythms of life.

• Spiritual Classics: Selected Readings on the Twelve Spiritual Disciplines A Renovare Resource for Individuals and Groups. Edited by Richard J. Foster and Emilie Griffin.

Works of St. Augustine, Thomas Merton, Fredrick Buechner, Evelyn Underhill, A.W. Tozer, G.K. Chesterton, Thomas More, Martin Luther King, Jr., Amy Carmichael, Simone Weil, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Hildegard of Bingen, John Milton, Dorothy Day, Leo Tolstoy, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and more are included.

From nearly two thousand years of Christian writing comes Spiritual Classics, fifty–two selections complete with a profile of each author, guided meditations for group and individual use, and reflections containing questions and exercises. Editors Richard Foster and Emilie Griffith offer their expertise by selecting inspirational writings and including their own commentary and recommendations for further guided reading and exploration.

• Praying in Color. Drawing a New Path to God. Sybil MacBeth

• My Morning Prayer: Seven Daily Services for People on the Go (2 – cd set) also in mp3

• My Evening Prayer - Seven Daily Services for People on the Go (2 - CD set) also in mp3

• Daily Grace App from Women of the ELCA • NRSV Bible Olive Tree app • Bible Gateway

*GROWING STEWARDS STEP BY STEP* Twelve Devotions and Prayers

Stewardship is a spiritual issue, not a financial issue. The journey to being a good steward has many steps. For some people this starts with reading, reflection, and prayer. Here's the seventh devotion for this purpose. The inspiration for these writings is "Stepping Stones of a Steward" by Ron Vallet (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co; Grand Rapids, MI; © 1989). [ed: this was written during or before 1989, but still applies in 2014]

Devotion 7

Recognizing Your Time & Talents Matthew 25:14 - 30

In the course of a person’s faith journey, God makes many

resources available, including time and talent. Through the parable of the talents, God makes it clear that your talent is whatever God has entrusted to you. One of the tasks on your journey is to discover, explore and use these talents and, if you are called to lead, then to accompany others in their journey.

I recall meeting Lynn at a council meeting. As the only

woman on the congregation council, she stood out. As a business woman in the community she managed an office of more than thirty people, but had not taken a strong leadership role in the congregation. Her new role as stewardship chairperson would be a challenge. I was invited to accompany her on this journey for more than a year.

The journey began by discovering the talents God had given her for ministry - leadership and administration. As a founding member of the congregation, others sensed her passion for ministry, but only recently had looked to her as a leader. While very capable in planning and leading meetings, she struggled with the transition from a business context to a church setting. As a lifelong Lutheran, she had become a faithful steward, but was uncertain how to be a steward leader. Lynn’s talents were not buried, they were often not polished for the setting in which she was being asked to lead.

[11]

In the months that followed, we explored how to use her gifts. She made several proposals to the congregation council and met with the pastors to talk about stewardship issues. Lynn raised questions about stewardship practices and suggested ways to expand or improve the reporting of stewardship activities. In this process, she used her talents while striving to be sensitive to the faith practices and feelings of others. She worked with and through committees in the congregation. Through regular prayer she was inviting the Holy Spirit to guide her is using her talents.

After about one year, a new spirit was evident in the congregation. It was not Lynn alone. It was the Spirit working through the pastors, leaders, and members. There was a desire to rediscover the missional spirit of the past. People engaged more openly in conversation about what it meant to be a member and to make a faith commitment to their ministry.

A few months later, we began to have conversations about accountability. As disciples, how are we held accountable for the talents entrusted to us? What are appropriate ways to invite others to be accountable? She approached the congregation council with these questions. Conversations became deeper and more faith filled. A few months later Lynn was asked to serve as the first woman president of the congregation.

As you continue on your faith journey, the question you may ask yourself is how you can use your resources of time and talent for God. You many not discover the call to be president of your congregation, but you can polish the talents God has given you and use them to do God’s work.

Let us Pray: Dear Lord, help us discover the talents you

have entrusted to each of us. May the Holy Spirit guide us in how to use these talents to do your work in our community and beyond. May we learn to be accountable to you for these gifts, and, when possible, may we accompany others in discovering how to use their gifts. Amen.

*GET INVOLVED* "I slept and dreamt that life was pleasure, I woke and saw that life was service, I served and discovered that service was pleasure." - Rabindranath Tagore

Blessing of the Animals On Sun., Oct. 5, we will be celebrating God’s good gift of

creation, especially as we experience it in the animals that God has entrusted to us as companions. The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi falls on Oct. 4 each year, so this is a wonderful opportunity for us to give thanks, as Francis did, for the creatures that he called “brother” and “sister.”

The blessing will take place at our 9:30 a.m. worship service. You are invited to bring your companion pets along with you to the service. Come and give thanks! (top)

All Saint’s Day November 2 is All Saints’ Day. As part of our worship on

that day, we are looking to update the Power Point presentation of pictures of members and extended CTL family who have passed way. We do not need photos again if they were included in last year’s presentation. If you have pictures of loved ones you think should be included, please pass the photos to Grace Deibert, [email protected] . Providing them electronically will save her having to scan them. However, if you do not have electronic files, then you can get her a photo and she can scan it. (top)

Vineyard Breakfast Vineyard Church, in downtown Elgin, hosts a breakfast for

the needy Mon-Fri, every week. About 60 people attend. Since June, CTL has joined many other area churches in helping to support this meal. In the summer, the meal is a cold breakfast; in the fall and winter, it is a hot breakfast. For the hot meal, we will need to provide some breakfast casseroles. Social Ministry is looking for some people who would be willing to take turns putting together such a casserole on a rotating basis. Debbie McG and Barb B volunteered to collect, bake, and deliver the casseroles. If you would like to make a casserole, please let Debbie or Barb know, or contact Barb at [email protected] or at 847-741-6756.

Mark Your Calendar for ELGIN CROP HUNGER WALK 2014

Since 1983, Elgin area faith communities and civic organizations have banded together in a local ELGIN CROP HUNGER WALK effort to bring awareness to the persistent problem of poverty and hunger locally and globally. During that time, Elgin CROP HUNGER WALKERS have raised over 500,000

[15]

(1/2 million!) dollars in support of the sustainable projects of Church World Service and Elgin area soup kettles and food pantries. The Elgin CROP HUNGER WALK will be held this year on Sun., Oct. 19. We will be enjoying the newly complete Elgin Riverwalk with registration beginning at 1 p.m. at Elgin Civic Plaza and step off at 2 p.m. The Walk is 1, 3, or 5 miles.

Plan to support ELGIN CROP HUNGER WALK through the bake sale at CTL on Sun., Oct. 12, and to join the CTL group that will be walking on Oct. 19 (top)

CTL Friendly Caller Ministry The purpose of the Friendly Caller Committee is to reach

out to members or friends of CTL who have been absent from our worshipping community for three months. We contact them to see if they have any pastoral needs (prayers, meals, home communion, and visit with the Pastor etc.)

We are looking for people to be friendly callers. If you have the gifts of care and compassion, and would enjoy making several calls, once every three months, we would love to have you on our committee. Contact Jan G at 847-888-9501 if you have questions or are interested in this rewarding ministry.

Kids Hope USA Kids Hope USA is up and running at Hillcrest Elementary!

Their children royally greeted mentors when sessions began in September. One child had seen the school social worker several times over the summer and he asked about his mentor every time. He could hardly wait to see her! The school office workers and teachers were glad to see the mentors, too. They've figured out that we're there to stay and that we're accomplishing good things in our work with the children. There's a need for as many mentors as we can provide. If you'd like more information about becoming a mentor, talk to Jeanne T or Carri N. Even if you don't think you could be a mentor, consider becoming a prayer partner. Each mentor-and-child has a prayer partner who prays for them during the time they spend together each week and for the child at other times during the week. If you don't feel you can commit to the once a week schedule or remember the names of mentors and

[16]

children, please just occasionally pray for Kids Hope and the work that CTL is doing at Hillcrest. Mentors and children are together on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 11:40 and 1:15. God knows the needs, even when we forget the names and details!

As the weather starts to change, coats, hats and mittens will be needed at Hillcrest. Bring new or gently used items to CTL for distribution at Hillcrest. Call Jeanne T or Carri N for more information about this amazing program.

If you have any questions or would like to suggest a book that you think, the book club would enjoy, please contact Carol H. (top)

Hooks and Needles (Prayer Shawl and Baptismal Blanket Ministry)

As you select yarn for a new prayer shawl, consider that we are in need of colors that are bright, lively, and cheerful —colors that will help dispel the gloom! We are getting very low on shawls, so please keep crocheting and knitting.

For crafters interested in making a prayer shawl, there are now "unkits" available next to the Dress-A-Girl kits in the CTL entry area. These kits include instructions, a card, and everything else you will need (except for the knitting needles/crochet hook) to complete a prayer shawl. Thanks to some wonderful angels, we are able to provide kits with yarn.
