From our Principal…..
Newsletter Edition 8, Week 8
Thursday 21st March 2019
We are Wondall, and we are kind!
This was very evident on Friday as we celebrated Wondall’s Kindness Day. Our students
and staff arrived at school wearing smiles and splashes of bright orange, to show their
support for kindness. Classes talked about ways they can be kind, and many students
found a way to surprise someone with a Random Act of Kindness. Students made kindness
pledges, and read poems and stories about being kind. Our Student Leaders brightened up
some school bags with their surprise messages of kindness, and every student received a
sticker to thank them for being kind.
Of course, kindness does not just happen on one
day each year at Wondall – it underlies our belief
at Wondall that just by being kind, we will all work
respectfully, responsibly and safely. We are
Wondall, and we are kind!
Curriculum Planning at Wondall.
Next week our teachers will be released from class in their cohorts, and will spend half a
day working with Deb Davis, our Head of Curriculum. Our Year-Level teaching teams will
work together to plan the curriculum delivery for next term.
We thank our teachers for their professional and caring commitment to our students.
P and C.
Many thanks to such a large group within our community for attending our P&C AGM and
General Meeting last night.
Heartfelt congratulations to our new P&C Executives for 2019:
President: Nicole Sadgrove
Vice President: Steve Rickertt
Secretary: Matt Rowan
Treasurer: Sarah Wilson
We especially thank Matt and Steve for continuing in their roles again this year, and Nicole
for stepping into the President’s position from her previous role as treasurer. We welcome
Sarah into her new role in the executive group.
Of course, we sincerely thank those who are stepping down from their roles after a
number of years of commitment to our P&C. Thanks go to Sharon Kemp, previous Vice
President who continues in her role with our Swim Club. We also sincerely thank Mark
Graubner. Mark has been our President for a number of years now, and has overseen
many changes within our P&C including the establishment and growth of our Outside
School Hours Care facility and provision of the OSHC building, and the purchase and
building of our new OSHC Rec Hall. His strategic thinking has ensured that our P&C
continues to move forward with embedded policies and procedures, and is committed to
all students at Wondall.

School News
From the Deputy Principals…..
Parent Teacher Interviews, Thursday 4 April:
Interviews will be held in our school hall on Thursday, 4th April from 3:30 - 7:50pm. Parents are invited to book an interview
with each class teacher as required. Bookings are made using SOBS, an on-line booking system. Please access the booking site
using this link or the SOBS link on our school website.
https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70382 Bookings will open at 7:00am on Monday, 25th March and close on Tuesday, 2nd April. If you experience any difficulty booking
an interview time, please contact our school office (3906 6444) and our office staff will assist you.
Anzac Day Service, Tuesday 24th April:
Wondall commemorates Anzac Day each year with a special assembly in our hall. Our Wondall
community is invited to join us for this occasion as we remember the courage, mateship and sacrifices
of those who have fought for our country, and those who continue to serve in our armed forces. Our
commemoration will be held on Wednesday, 24th April (week one of next term) commencing at 2:00pm.
Our Student Leaders will support the RSL by selling Anzac Day merchandise before school on Tuesday
and Wednesday of that week, 23rd and 24th April. Our Student Leaders will be in front of our administration building each
morning on these days.
Anzac Day Community Service and Parade, Wednesday 25th April:
Our school community is invited again this year to participate in the Manly Lota RSL Community Service
and Parade. This event is held on Anzac Day, 25th April. Our student body will be marching in the parade,
and then attending the service held in Richard Russell Park. Students wishing to march with the school are
to meet outside Manly State School on Ernest St at 7:30am. Students are to wear full school uniform with
their school hat, and should bring a water bottle to carry whilst participating in the parade.
Vision Screening – Prep Students:
Children’s Health Queensland offers a free Vision Screening test for all Prep students across the state. This is a government
initiative, with a Registered Nurse visiting us during Term Two to conduct the screening. We know that good vision is
important for our children’s educational, physical and social development, so this process allows us to identify concerns and
work to overcome any difficulties. All Prep students will receive information and forms this week. Please ensure your forms
are returned to school by Monday, 1st April. We ask that the forms are returned to school even if you are electing not to
participate in the program.
NAIDOC Celebrations – Community Planning Meeting:
Wondall will be celebrating NAIDOC on Friday, 19th July this year. All members of our community
are invited to help to plan our activities for NAIDOC celebrations across our school.
A planning meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, 2nd May at 9:00am at school. If you are
unable to attend this meeting but would like to offer to help with our celebrations, please contact
Bridget Hawkins or Michele Masters.
Walking to School Safely: We have received some reports from members of our wider community of students not acting safely on their way to school.
This morning a car was required to brake suddenly as a group of students crossed the road near Bonniebrae St. Please remind
your students about staying safe on their way to and from school. Students should:
Walk safely and sensibly, using the footpaths provided.
Cross the road at designated crossing zones when available. In particular, students should NOT be crossing Wondall Rd
anywhere other than at the Pedestrian Crossing (the traffic lights) outside our school.
Pamela Kondys and Bridget Hawkins.

Stem Stories @ Wondall
During technology in Week Five, Year 6 students explored and identified the main components of a digital
system (a computer). Mr Butler brought up some old computers and the students pulled the computers apart.
They documented their learning on an Ipad by taking photos, labelling the computer parts and talking about
the function of this part of the computer. Students made discoveries such as: “This is the Central Processing
Unit or CPU. It is like the brain of the computer. It carries out the instructions from computer programs.”
Year 3 students have been busy comparing and contrasting old and new forms of food and fibre processing
technology. Using secondary pictorial sources, they have enjoyed identifying traditional and modern-day forms
of agricultural practice. For example, where once cattle were mustered by people on horseback, now
helicopters are used for the same purpose. Students have been interested to learn that salting and smoking
technologies were in place long before electricity so that food could be preserved, and are still very much in
use today. Students are building this knowledge to prepare them for the unit's culminating activity in which
they will prepare their own lunchbox item, using new and old technologies.

School News
Wondall Heights State Primary School would like to thank Bunnings, Manly West for their
assistance to help re-establish our 4 existing above ground vegetable gardens, with a wide variety
of seedlings and bags of fertiliser.
We have always appreciated Bunnings’ continued
support and dedication to local schools as we work
together to help protect the environment and educate
our community. At Wondall, we see this as an
important project to highlight just how easy it can be to
cater for sustainability and biodiversity within our school
environment.
The current focus of our environmental initiatives
within our school grounds is recycling, litter,
biodiversity and caring for our environment. A
vegetable garden is a great way to show how to cater
for biodiversity and sustainability within our school.
Again, thank you Stacey and Maddie for the help you gave our teachers, Yr2 students and
Environmental leaders to establish our gardens for 2019. We now look forward to working with
Stacey after the Easter vacation to construct another small raised garden bed and compost bin for our
gardens.
