FEBRUARY

It is time to update our enrollment records for those students

who will be eligible for our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten

classrooms in the 2012-2013 school year.

Children who will be 4 years old by December 1, 2012 are eligible

to apply for our pre-kindergarten program offered at the Dalton

Elementary building. We will hold an informational meeting on

May 7th at 6:00 pm in the Dalton Cafetorium. At this meeting, in-

formation about the program will be discussed and all necessary

paperwork will be distributed. We will send out additional remind-

ers about the event as the date gets closer.

We are also in the process of registering students for Kindergar-

ten next year. If you have a child who will be five years old by

December 1, 2012, and is not currently enrolled in the Dalton Pre-

Kindergarten program, please contact the Elementary office for

registration and screening information.

Reminder:

This year the New York State assessments in English Language

Arts and Math will be given right after we return from spring va-

cation. Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will take ELA exams on

April 17, 18 and 19. The math exams will be given the following

week on April 25, 26, and 27. Please mark your calendars.

100th Day in First Grade First graders anxiously await the 100th day of school! From the first day of school to the 100th the

concept of numbers to 100 is covered in many ways. To reinforce this on the 100th day we: make

projects based on a book with 100 objects; make necklaces with 100 beads; make posters with 100

things; and generate a list of 100 words. We even eat 100 things for snack! It is a great day to

really focus on ways to count to 100 and what the number 100 really means!

Mrs. Long’s Pre-K Celebrates the 100th Day of School!

Friday, February 10th was the 100th day of school. Mrs. Long’s Pre-K students were given a

task to create a “100” art project. They worked hard and made some very creative projects!

Some of the projects included: names made out of 100 pieces of candy and pasta, 100 hearts,

stickers, goldfish, macaroni, candy, cheerios, wrestlers’ names, “School is Cool” made out of 100

gummy bears, a hat with 100 beads on it, and 100 pieces of cookie crisps numbered and glued

in a bowl glued to a placemat with a spoon and a napkin! We counted to 100 by 10’s, 5’s, and

1’s. We counted 100 cubes and we were quiet for 100 seconds! We’re 100 days smarter! Great

job Pre-K!

Miss Waldon’s Pre-K Celebrates 100 Day!

Friday, February 10th was an exciting day in Pre-K: the 100th day of school! It was exciting when

we finally put the 100th piece on our “Days of School” number line.

We read Emily’s First 100 Days of School by Rosemary Wells and compared our first 100 days to

Emily’s. We found out that we have done many of the things Emily did in the story. It was fun to

remember meeting new friends, having a visit from the Nunda Fire Department, and learning so

many numbers and words.

Counting 100 things is hard work when you’re in Pre-K, but we’re so proud that we’re learning

how! After counting out 100 beads, sequins, confetti, and foam shapes we made “100” collages. In

small groups we made 100 Day trail mix for a treat, and then we ate our 100 Day cake – yummy!

Back in September the 100th day of school felt like it would never come. Now we’re amazed at how

much we’ve done this year!

Students & Families!

Keep sending in your Box Tops!

We are kicking off the New Year with something new to help collect

Box Tops for Education in our school. On the back you will find a

collection sheet that you and your child may color and decorate to-

gether for the month of February. As you collect box tops at home,

encourage your child to tape the box tops onto their collection

sheet. Simply return the finished collection sheet to Mrs. Nageld-

inger or Mrs. Privitera (in 4th grade). The money that is earned

through our collection of box tops is used for student scholarships

and other wonderful resources for our students!

Here are some easy steps to participate...

1. When you are finished with a box tops item, just cut off the box top

label! Look for the symbol below if you are not sure.

2. TAPE each box top to the collection sheet and return it to Mrs.

Privitera (room 1260) in the 4th grade.

3. Help collect more box tops from family and friends to return to

our school!


Second Graders in Mrs. Cathie Gehrig's class had a visit recently from the Livingston County

Sheriff's Department K-9 unit. Deputy Stephanie Schroeder and her partner, "Gibbs" gave a

demonstration on how they work as a team to keep students safe. The students learned

that Gibbs is from the country of Hungary and uses his keen sense of smell to look for missing

people and harmful drugs. "Zook" is his command in Czech to "track." Every time he did a good

job Gibbs got to play with his favorite toy ! Thank you Deputy Schroeder and K-9 Gibbs !

Livingston County Sheriff’s Departmart K-9 Unit Visit’s

Mrs. Gehrig’s 2nd Grade Class

Second graders have been spending the past couple of weeks researching an animal of their

choice. Students spent several days in the library with Mrs. Ellison collecting information

about their animal such as size, habitat, diet, characteristics, and other interesting facts.

They also found a picture of their animal.

After they finished researching their animal, the students came back into the classroom to

type up their reports using the laptop cart! What a treat!

Once all the final editing was complete, Mrs. Downey’s and Mrs. Wood’s classes combined to do

presentations. During the presentations, students were asked to read aloud their reports

(they had practiced several times beforehand) with clarity, fluency, and with an appropriate

voice volume. They concluded with showing their peers the picture they chose.

Everyone did a fantastic job and we all learned something new!

2nd Graders Research Project

Daniel Kirk visits Dalton Elementary By Joan Ellison

On January 26th, children’s author/illustrator Daniel Kirk

visited Dalton Elementary school. To prepare for his visit the stu-

dents read many of his books and did projects to display. His

books include: the Library Mouse series, the Elf Realm series,

Snow Family, Dogs Rule!, Cat Power!, Keisha Ann Can! and many

more.

At his presentations Mr. Kirk talked about the process of

writing and illustrating, where he gets his ideas and sang some

songs. He showed power point slides of some of his work and

childhood. The children were thoroughly entertained!

During the presentations there was a free book drawing.

One student from each grade level won a signed copy of a Daniel

Kirk book. All students had the opportunity to purchase one of his

books for him to autograph.

Daniel took a tour of the school to look at all the projects the

students worked so hard to prepare for his visit. He was very im-

pressed with the amount of effort that went into getting ready for

him. Thank you to all the students and teachers for putting so

much time into making the visit a huge success!



The children in Mrs. Forrester’s and Mrs. Macomber’s kinder-

garten class have been very busy this month. They celebrated

the 100th day of school on Friday, February 10th. Each child

brought in a 100th day project and worked in math centers com-

pleting several 100th day activities. Stop down in the kindergar-

ten hallway to see what a great job we did. President’s Day has

also been a very exciting topic. We have read several stories

about the “Father of our Country” and Abraham Lincoln. We

have made silhouettes, log cabins and completed a 4 square writ-

ing piece on being President one day. Everyone had great ideas

about being our leader. Some children were going to feed the

hungry, make sure everyone had a home and lower taxes! They

have our votes!

Busy as Bees in Kindergarten


Spring is just around the corner, and everything continues to remain very busy in the

art room with students working hard on all their projects. Likewise, students are working

diligently on this year’s theme for our Art Poster for Bus Safety, which is: “Stand Back from

the Yellow and Black.” To begin this year’s project some students had a presentation from

our Keshequa Bus Transportation Supervisor, Mr. Ivan Beardsley, and the rest of our stu-

dents had presentations from Sal NiCastro and Linda Jacobs. They spoke with students on

Bus Safety, Bus Respect, and Bus Responsibility, both on and off the bus. These presenta-

tions fit in nicely with our Peace-Builder, and PBIS programs. Our students are trying their

best to create quality artwork, not just for an art grade or to win prize money for their art-

work at the local, state, and national levels—but also to advocate and teach the public and one

another about bus safety. This teaching may save the life of a loved one, friend, or even

someone they may not personally know.

This type of art-poster teaching is artwork at its finest level and one which combines

ELA, and math with art. Within this project, and through the discussion from our presenters,

the students will gain a deeper understanding of the reasons to create a safety poster. Our

presenters will do this by looking at the social, cultural, and economic contexts in which we

will be developing the posters. This is very important in helping students make connections of

the visual art discipline with other areas of knowledge, such as ELA, math, careers, safety,

and even with our environment. Many students are entering this contest once again this year,

so let’s wish them luck as they compete locally, state-wide, and hopefully internationally with

Canada. Perhaps one of our students will choose a career in graphic design, publication design

or some other art-related field.

Here also is an early reminder that the Dalton Elementary Fine Arts Festival is

coming soon on Monday evening, May 14th, starting at 6:00 pm. Please support our students

by coming to the festival, and also by letting me show some of your own artwork along with

our student artwork during the evening of our festival. This offer is open to both profes-

sional artists and amateurs alike, and to whoever may be interested within our surrounding

counties. Your artwork may be something newly done or previously created and does not need

to be matted or framed. I can set the work up for you if you don’t have time, just bring it to

me any time after 2:35 PM on that day. For more information please call Mrs. Strathearn at
