LONGITUDINAL SURVEYS OF AUSTRALIAN YOUTHThe Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is a research study that follows young Australians as they move from school into further study and work. It provides valuable information to better understand young peoples’ pathways from school and what influences their choices. The LSAY program is managed and funded by the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), with support from the states and territories. The analytical and research work is undertaken by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in collaboration with Australian National University’s Social Policy Evaluation, Analysis and Research Centre (SPEAR). Wallis Consulting Group conduct the interviews for LSAY.

Further information about the LSAY program is available from

THE CFS wORkER

Since he can remember, ‘Col’ has wanted to be a fireman; for him, it was the personal challenge. Whilst being in shape is very important, you also have to be mentally resilient to deal with life-threatening situations and quick decisions. ‘Col’ started off as a volunteer to see if it was right for him and had a red-hot shot at fundraising from the age of about 15. He has a variety of certificates and is always undergoing training alongside his part-time job in the army reserve. He is one of those people who is always happy; ask his parents – he still lives with them.

THE CHEFFEBRUARY

‘Fran’ has always fancied herself as a chef – while her first love is food, she also loves to travel and experience new cultures. She hopes one day she will be so good her work will take her to exotic locations or maybe she will even become a television personality! Being a chef is a very demanding job and it’s not just about preparing delicious foods; you need great communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure and work well in a team. ‘Fran’ is single and lives with her parents.

THE MECHANICMARCH

‘Mike the mechanic’ started working as a plumber’s assistant, but looking back he doesn’t know why as he has always been such a grease monkey. He was working 10 hours a week and learning ‘on the job’ but realised he should pursue his passion, so he shut the lid on plumbing and started an automotive apprenticeship at TAFE. He now works 48 hours a week and wouldn’t trade it for anything. He’s single and happy living with his family.

THE FLORISTAPRIL

‘Violet’ was born to be a florist. Not only is she bursting with creativity, being surrounded by floral beauties all day has really made her blossom. She was married in 2006 and, you guessed it, her dress was made of flowers! These days she works 15 hours a week after completing a Certificate IV in Floristry over two years. ‘Violet’ worked in sales for a short time before she woke up and smelled the roses.

THE gREENkEEPERMAY

Meet ‘Joe’, the golf club greenkeeper. ‘Joe’ loves being outdoors and he also loves mother nature so his job ‘suits him to a tee’. He works an average 55 hours a week and he’s happy with his life in general, but he worked hard to get here and it didn’t all go according to plan. Life in the workforce began for him with a sales assistant job stacking shelves 5 hours a week during high school years and he left this to embark on a horticulture degree at uni after he completed Year 12. This was interrupted when he became a father and needed some extra cash taking on a job as a delivery driver and then moving into sales. He returned to uni after a few years and now he’s renting with his defacto partner and son and looking forward to a rewarding career ahead.

‘Kate’ has always been ambitious and from an early age was looking for a career she could really sink her teeth into. Some people ask her if anyone could really have a passion for teeth, but ‘Kate’ knows giving someone a beautiful smile can change their life dramatically. This is only the beginning of her career but already she is working 30 hours a week – she got the job through the campus employer program so she is wearing a grin from ear to ear.

THE ELITE ATHLETEJULY

‘Ralph’ has always been highly competitive and his determination to become an elite athlete is a career goal which started at a very young age. It’s a lofty ambition and one that can bring you great wealth and prestige if you can make it over the hurdles along the path. ‘Ralph’ has an exceptionally positive attitude and he likes the idea that one day he might be a role model for children just like him. ‘Ralph’ managed to complete Year 12, as well as his Bachelor degree in philosophy. He feels confident he has something to fall back on, once his sporting career is over.

THE INDUSTRIAL CLEANER

AUgUST

‘Buff’ used to grow and sell vegetables in rural NSW whilst at school – but he was left feeling like there was something more after he completed one year at TAFE in horticulture. He always liked working with tools and machinery, but found it difficult to find work and was unemployed for a few months. An opportunity presented itself for him to become a commercial ‘green’ cleaner. He loves working as part of a team and his dream to buy a franchise one day has him foaming at the mouth.

THE JOURNALISTSEPTEMBER

“ Following a story from start to finish and being proud of the final result is one of the best aspects of being a journalist” says ‘Ed’. Journalism is a career choice that requires a little bit of luck and a lot of persistence. ‘Ed’ is no exception to this rule; while he was studying a diploma course in media studies, he was also undertaking a Bachelor degree and working part-time. He still found time while studying to write articles for his local newspaper and in the end this made him stand out from the crowd.

THE SOCIAL wORkER

Being a social worker – whilst it isn’t easy and can be thankless at times – ‘Victoria’ knows she fulfils a vital role in the community. She meets a lot of very different people; some can be uncooperative or mentally unwell, so she has to have good social skills.

‘Victoria’ completed both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in social work, but times were tough. Day-to-day her job can vary greatly. ‘Victoria’ said “Sometimes I ask myself why am I doing this? But you know, it makes me happy to be able to provide support caring for other people.”

THE ZOOLOgIST

‘Cindy’ is a dedicated animal lover and worked at a pet shop when she was just 16. She has a special interest in reptiles. She finds them fascinating. She knows the hardest thing about becoming a zoologist is that there are not many jobs; even zoos don’t actually hire many zoologists, but she won’t let that put her off. To help fulfil this dream, she is pursuing further study.

THE TEACHERDECEMBER

Teaching is a special calling. ‘Miss Merit’ says the most important attribute for a teacher is a good sense of humour. She tries to use humour where she can as part of her teaching methods. ‘Miss Merit’ worked mostly as a cashier when she was younger, and when she was in high school she wanted to be a journalist. After going straight to uni to study a communication and media studies degree, she deferred mid-year and had a rethink about her future direction. She went back to uni the following year and is now working as a qualified teacher. Her students say she’s a real ‘class act’.
