FOPAP PRESIDENT’S REPORT – MAY 2013
CENTRAL COAST REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION and SONG
Forgive the pun but things appear to be happening in the town. Over the last couple of months FOPAP Committee Members and I have been watching developments with regard to the rejection of the Landing proposals – Stages 1 to 3 – and the current proposals put forward by the Central Coast Regional Development Corporation (CCRDC). It is refreshing to see that the plans for a Performing Arts Centre are still on the board. In this time we have met with politicians, councillors and other interested parties to keep the issue fresh in everyone’s minds.
On 24 April we met with GRAHAME HINCHLEY, new CEO of the CCRDC, and the Liberal Candidate for the seat of Robertson, LUCY WICKS. Ms Wicks, herself a keen musician, wants to see a Performing Arts Centre built at Gosford and sees it, and with other aspects of the CCRDC proposals, as the catalyst for growth in the Gosford CBD.
It has been so disappointing to note once more that the “naysayers” who have criticized moves for the development of Gosford continually bemoan the proposals put forward, have come up with nothing constructive in endeavoring to solve the woes of our flagging city.
Gosford needs a “shot in the arm” to revitalize it.
Whilst there were many shortcomings with the previous Landing proposals, it really appears as if the naysayers were simply against any form of progress.
It is my belief that to criticize the building of a Performing Arts Centre on public land is near-sighted and mean spirited. After all, isn’t a complex such as this for public use? It is not a building for the elite, despite some of the bleatings we have heard for so long. The proposed building is for use of those interested members of the PUBLIC who wish to utilize a high quality performing space.
It is time for action now!
Peter Brandon President, FOPAP

IT’S TWELVE MONTHS TO LIFT OFF!
SCHOOL SITE PROJECT SET FOR MID-2014 DEVELOPMENT should be under way on a retail and commercial centre on the old Gosford School site by mid-2014. Central Coast Regional Development Corporation chief executive officer John Taylor said the rezoning proposal should be gazetted by August, after “tweaking”. Public submissions ended last week. “The vast majority of submissions received on the proposal are in favour,”, “Mr Taylor said. “There has been a lot of misunderstanding. Many of the objections were to the original stage one of the proposal, featuring finger wharves over the Brisbane Water. This plan is now off the table. We are listening to the members of the community and are determined to provide a facility the city can be proud of with the full support of the MPs”. Gosford state Liberal MP Chris Holstein said the new proposal was very different to the original because the corporation had taken on board objections from the Community. “This is only going to improve our waterfront area,” Mr Holstein said. “I can remember very vocal protests when the Regional Art Gallery, the Peninsula Leisure Centre and Bluetongue Stadium were first mooted and now people wouldn’t be without them. It will be the same here.” Minister for the Central Coast Chris Hartcher said people had been waiting for more than 30 years to see activity at the waterfront. “I am confident they will see something happening by mid 2014,” Mr Hartcher said. “This will refocus the centre of the city to the water, as was the case 100 years ago.” Mr Taylor said the waterfront plan would encourage commercial developments. GOSFORD WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT and YOUNG PEOPLE
FOPAP Committee Member, TREVOR MOORE, recently wrote to the local press, advocating that more young people be involved in decisions about the Gosford Waterfront Development.
As they and following generations will be the users of the planned waterfront facilities, what do you think of Trevor’s suggestions? Do you think it’s important to discuss this matter with your young friends and family? If you agree please contact Trevor on [email protected].

THE CHALLENGE of CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand
With no Town Hall or any good acoustic venues for major performances after the earthquake in Christchurch, orchestras have been forced into school halls and a sports arena. Part of the city recovery plan is to have “hubs” of activities – health, justice, sport, music etc. A strong lobby group is taking the opportunity to advocate for a Performing Arts Precinct. On a recent visit to Christchurch, the notice below was seen on wire fencing in the city centre. It says: The arts and creative industries are crucial to the recovery of Christchurch. They contribute to the local economy, to community and cultural wellbeing, and support tourism and hospitality. Most of all, they draw people to the city and make it an inspiring place to be.” Thankfully, Gosford does not need an earthquake to get its Performing Arts Precinct.
