Burnt Hills Recognized as a Best Community for Music Education

For the fifth year in a row, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake has been

recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants

(NAMM) Foundation for our outstanding music education program.

In cooperation with researchers at the Music Research Institute at the

University of Kansas, and based on survey results, the NAMM

Foundation selects school districts each year to be recognized as one

of the “Best Communities for Music Education”. BH-BL is one of only 527 school districts across the country to receive this honor.

The awards program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum. Designations are made to

districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. These districts and schools set the bar in offering students access to comprehensive music education.

The designation takes on added significance this year with the new research showing ties between

K-12 school students who actively participate in school music education programs and overall

student success. As detailed in Neuroscientist and Education Week, a recent study of students in the

Chicago Public Schools by brain researchers at Northwestern University builds on previous findings

that participation in music education programs helps improve brain function, discipline and language development.

As a member of Friends of Music, your support demonstrates our community commitment to the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake music program, making us eligible for this outstanding recognition!

OMS Chapter 7507 BH-BL HS Chapter 7455

BH-BL is fortunate to now have our own Junior and Senior Chapters of Tri-M, the international music honor society for middle and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.

With more than 5,500 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools across the world. Tri-M shares and supports the objectives of every music educator - to increase student and school involvement with music and to make a stronger and moreunified music program. Tri-M offers a completed system of rewards that helps inspire students and recognizes excellence in individuals and chapters. With this system, the society builds self-esteem andprovides a channel of personal fulfillment.

As this was our first year, we actually held two induction ceremonies. The first was in October and the second was in June. Going forward, the annual inductions will be at the end of the school year, in June.

Shippin' Up To Boston

Ben O'Shea took the High School Jazz Ensemble to Boston's Berklee College in February to compete inthe Berklee Jazz Fest. Competition was stiff as over 200 high school jazz ensembles competed in the festival. BH-BL placed 8th out of 16 in our division, and Abigail Evans received a Judges' Choice Award for her outstanding solo.

Friends of Music would like to thank these local businesses for their support and assistance:

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE FOR

O'ROURKE MIDDLE SCHOOLPERFORMING GROUPS

Middle School concerts were held at the OMS Cafetorium this year for the first time. Although seating was limited, the setting was more intimate and the stage was beautiful. Grade 6th, 7th, and 8th ensemble conductors and students all appreciated the convenience of being able to perform in the same building where they rehearse. OMS Principal Colleen Wolff said, "This is our home. We want our students to show off their talents here." Middle School concerts for the 2017-2018 school year will continue to be held at the OMS Cafetorium.

PROCTORS THEATRE BECOMES BH-BL AUDITORIUM FOR A DAY

For the second year, the Fine Arts Honors Showcase featured a combination of both musical and visual artistry. The event was held on May 22nd at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady. The showcase featured musical performances by the Orchestra, Concert Band, and Concert Choir, and a stunning slide show of artwork by graduating seniors was displayed on the theatre screen during one of the pieces by Concert Choir. Awards for Fine Arts were presented to seniors on this very special night at Proctors.

Each year the BH-BL Friends of Music presents awards to student musicians in 5th, 8th, and 12th grades - the "seniors" of each building. The elementary and middle school awards are presented to members of the three ensembles in eachschool (Band, Orchestra and Chorus) who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, leadership and growth. The High School Scholarship involves an application that is submitted to a scholarship committee for review. Students are evaluatedon school ensemble participation, extracurricular music activities, honors and awards, and participation in local, regionaland state honors ensembles. In addition, students must write an essay about the impact music has had on their lives. Friends of Music Awards for 2016 were presented to:

Each year, Friends of Music provides an opportunity for students to apply for mini-grants to further their music education. The purpose of the mini-grant program is to provide financial assistance to help students with such things as the funding of private lessons, a summer music program, assistance towards the purchase of an instrument upgrade andmore. Students must be in grades 6-11 and currentlyenrolled in one of the BH-BL performing ensembles. Applications are available in January and can be found on the BH-BL FOM web page at:

FYI on Festival Applications...

Each year, music students at BH-BL have

the opportunity to apply for a number

of annual music festivals. While

application dates are not firm at the

present, parents should know that most

applications are due approximately six weeks before the actual festival. In most

cases, music teachers in all ensembles for grades 6-12 will begin to announce

this information about 8 to10 weeks before the festival. Applications usually

involve parent and student signatures committing to the dates of the festival

and attendance at the festival if accepted. The Fine Arts Department will have

applications on the website as well as hard copies in all grade 6-12 ensemble

rehearsal rooms. Participation in the previous year's NYSSMA festival is needed

for most festivals as ensembles are chosen based on NYSSMA scores and

school director’s recommendations.

NYSSMA SOLO FESTIVALS

Over 100 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Music students participated in the NYSSMA Solo Festivals in the spring of 2017. Participation in NYSSMA evaluations is a valuable part of student musical growth, giving students independent feedback

from trained music adjudicators, and serving to inform students

of areas of strength as well as areas where improvement is needed. Teachers often use the evaluations as tools to focus instruction. NYSSMA solo scores are also used in the selection

process forConference All-State, Area All-State, Suburban Council MusicFestivals and all Saratoga Warren All-County Music Festivals.

This year students may attend the NYSSMA Piano Festival at

The College of Saint Rose on March 9-10 (tentative), the regular NYSSMA Solo Festival on April 13-14 at Ravena

High School, and the NYSSMA Instrumental Jazz and Vocal

Jazz Festival on June 1-2 at Shaker Jr High School. More information about upcoming NYSSMA Solo Festivals will be distributed to students in school and will appear on the district website.
