    you to this, our 23rd season of concerts and special choral worship services at the Cathedral of St. John.The Friends of Cathedral Music series has long been a vital part of the Cathedral’s outreach to the greater community. It is an

    offering to the people of our city and beyond.The Cathedral serves Albuquerque by opening its doors and inviting others to share in these musical gifts. People from all walks

    of life come from far and wide to experience the splendor of our musical events. Your presence among us enriches our lives.We anticipate great moments for concert-goers with the 23rd musical season at the Cathedral of St. John. We’ve combined a

    memorable repertoire of classical music with exceptionally talented artists from across the globe. The 2016–2017 season includesconcerts, special liturgical events and, throughout the season of Lent, musical meditations each Friday evening alongside a uniqueopportunity to support our Cathedral’s Food Pantry.

    We invite you to join us: to take part, to share, to be touched by the Spirit that moves through music, to be nourished by thatsame Spirit, and to be deepened in your relationship with each other and God through great music and talented musicians.

  • Sunday October 23rd, 2016 at 3:00pmCelebrating the 10th Anniversary of Cathedral Commissions

    The commissioning of new works has always been crucial to thehealth and vitality of sacred music. In facilitating the creation ofnew works for the Episcopal Church, Friends of Cathedral Musichas, since 2006, made an important contribution to the musicallife and repertoire not just of our own Cathedral but of our widerdenomination.

    The Cathedral Choirs, conducted by Director of Cathedral MusicMaxine Thévenot and accompanied by Assistant Organist-ChoirDirector Edmund Connolly, will present a concert showcasingworks commissioned for the Cathedral by Friends of CathedralMusic over the past decade.

    Commissioned composers include David Arcus, Stephen Paulus,Judith Bingham, David Briggs, Anthony Piccolo, Tarik O’Regan,Andrew Ager, Philip Moore, Nicholas White, Andrew Carter,Stephanie Martin and Aaron David Miller.

    The Friends of Cathedral Music Cathedral Commissionsprogram is delighted to welcome British composerCecilia McDowall.

    Born in London, Cecilia McDowall has won many awardsand has been seven times short-listed for the BritishComposer Awards. In 2014 she won the BritishComposer Award for Choral Music. Much of McDowall’schoral music is performed worldwide, as well as herorchestral music. Recent important commissions includeone for the BBC Singers, the Royal Scottish NationalOrchestra, London Mozart Players and a jointcommission from the City of London Sinfonia and theScott Polar Research Institute to celebrate the life of theBritish Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, inSeventy Degrees Below Zero.

    Come and hear the world premiere performance ofCecilia McDowall’s newly-commissioned work for ourCathedral Choirs, sung within the context of our 11ammorning liturgy.

    In Spring 2016 the Cathedral Choirs were granted aproclamation by the Governor of the State of NewMexico, Susana Martinez, stating that May 22, 2016 wasto be known throughout New Mexico as ‘The Choirs ofthe Cathedral of St. John Day’.

    One year on, our Cathedral Choirs once again offer theirannual Great Hymns & Anthems concert with theCathedral’s resident brass ensemble, Breaking Brass.

    The Cathedral Choirs present a program of favoriterepertoire from the liturgical year for choirs, organ andbrass with Director of Cathedral Music Maxine Thévenotand Assistant Organist-Choir Director Edmund Connolly.
