letter signed "Your Valentine"as a farewell. SaintValentine's Day is an officialfeast day in the AnglicanCommunion, as well as in theLutheran Church. Some part, but not all of the EasternOrthodox Church alsocelebrates Saint Valentine'sDay, albeit on July 6 and July30, the former date in honorof the Roman presbyter SaintValentine, and the latter datein honor of HieromartyrValentine, the Bishop ofInteramna (modern Terni). InGreek Orthodox Church andother Churches of theEcumenical Patriarchate, noSaint Valentine exists, norvenerated. The day was first associatedwith romantic love in thecircle of Geoffrey Chaucer inthe High Middle Ages, whenthe tradition of courtly loveflourished. In 18th-centuryEngland, it evolved into anoccasion in which loversexpressed their love for eachother by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, andsending greeting cards(known as "valentines"). InEurope, Saint Valentine'sKeys are given to lovers "asa romantic symbol and aninvitation to unlock the giver'sheart", as well as to children,in order to ward off epilepsy(called Saint Valentine'sMalady). Valentine's Daysymbols that are used todayinclude the heart-shapedoutline, doves, and the figureof the winged Cupid. Sincethe 19th century, handwritten

OUR FRIENDS Richard Mc

Waste not, want not! This man of Scottish decenttakes great pride in budgeting a dollar as far as itcan go. Richard was born in Illinois. He has twosisters and a brother scattered about the UnitedStates. He has had several jobs in his life thathave led him to becoming a "Jack of all trades". This fix-it man has been able to survive for thepast 6 years in the desert of Henderson by thegenerosity of others that pay or barter with himfor his handyman talents. By frequenting theFriends' in the Desert dinners from three to fourtimes a week, he does not go hungry.

School was never his favorite place to go. He isnaturally inquisitive and prefers to discoveranswers on his own. Richard barely passed HighSchool and tried a vocational school in weldingand auto mechanics. To this day he admits toreading mechanical and scientific books andmagazines far too much. Other compulsionsinclude TV and the computer. Prior to beinghomeless, he once asked a landlord to removehis TV from his room, because he found himselfglued to the set nearly every day. "I didn't goanywhere," he states with an appearance of a

Raised as a "token" Presbyterian so his mothercould get a babysitter every Sunday, Richardclaims no specific religion but he attends aHenderson Christian service, Church in the Park, regularly.

Looking into the future he claims he will needhelp with his eyes and his hearing. Richard hasjust received a major gift which came in January2016; a sister arranged for him to live in anapartment for the next year. This poses hisnewest challenge, readjusting to normal life fromthe existence of the desert. You can do it Richard!
