William Penny

Brookes in 1850 for

intellectual improve-ment." Baron de

Coubertin was in-

spired to create the

global event after a

visit to the games in

Much Wenlock. Couber-

tin discussed how the

Wenlock games might

be translated on to a

bigger, international

stage. The influential

and wealthy French-man was suitably in-

spired and shared

Brookes' dream of a

modern, international

games. The first

games of the modern

Olympics took place

in Athens in 1896.

Juan Antonio Sa-maranch, president of

the International Olym-

pic Committee (IOC),

visited Much Wenlock in

1994 and laid a wreath

at Brookes' grave. He

said at the time: "I came

to pay homage and

tribute to Dr Brookes,who really was the

founder of the modern

Olympic Games."

What a great time we had at our

Jubilee Lunch on Friday 1st June.Although the weather was not good, it didnt spoil the party atmosphere. The dining room

was adorned with Union Jack bunting, table clothes, flags, napkins & paper cups. Red,

white & blue balloons greeted the members outside & inside.

Our members did us proud dressing in Union Jack clothes & colours. When the members

were settled for lunch, sparkling white wine was given out & we toasted The Queen before

enjoying a lunch of ham salad with new potatoes. Dessert was home made lemon cheese-

cake. Tea/coffee was served whilst the raffle was drawn by members Arnold & Richard.

The members voted for Enid Hill from Netherton who had made the best Jubilee Hat. We

played card bingo, which Rosie Fisher won a box of chocolates. We had four prizes in thegame Steal the Parcel. 1st prize a right royal flush - a toilet roll won by Margaret Garside.

2nd prize a picnic in the park - a picnic chocolate bar won by Kathy Holmes. 3rd prize

take a break - a kitkat, won by Alice Storer. 4th prize to wash The Queen - a small bar of

soap, won by Marjorie Perry. Thank you to Liz for running about passing the parcels from

one member to another, when she could find out who had the parcels as they kept hidingthem, not wanting to pass the parcel on as the game progressed.

Two members where presented with orchids as they celebrate special birthdays. Muriel

Walton will celebrate her 90th in June & Pat Randerson will celebrate her 70th in July.

Happy Birthday to you both from all at Friend to Friend.

Many THANKS to all volunteers who helped me make our Jubilee Lunch such a special

one for the members to remember.

A Royal DittyIn 1952 George number six died

The nation mourned, the people cried.

But a new era is about to begin,

Said The Queen Mother as she knocked back her gin!

Our daughter, Elizabeth, is to be Queen,Returning from overseas looking serene.

When in 53 they placed the crown

Upon her head in old London town.

Dressed to kill and looking well,

Shell do us proud - you can tell!Groomed for the job from early life,

With a handsome man to support his wife.

When in 57 Phillip said lets see,

If we can broadcast a message on T.V.

And now every Christmas day we reach

For the remote control to hear her speech.

She tells of her travels by sea and air,

Of riding on horseback without a care,

Of processions in carriages getting a bit tinny -When 59 sees the launch of the very modern Mini.

Already a Ma to Charlie and Anne,

The Duke, youll agree, a handsome young man

Once again becomes quite randy

As 1960 produces Prince Andy.

A little pal arrives in 64

As stork deposits Edward at the door.

A young family and duty is dammed hard work,

But our Lizzies definitely not one to shirk!

Commonwealth tours and functions at home,

The Queens at her best where ere she may roam.

Dresses by Hartnell, hats - Freddie Fox,

Whatever she wears she knocks off your socks.

Now the sixties were, without doubt, SWINGING,

As in 66 the World Cup were winning.

67 saw colour T.V. sales -

And in 69 Charles becomes the new Prince of Wales.

Her love of Great Britain is so very clear,With Christmas at Sandringham, at Balmoral, New

Year.

And not long ago, and in so much style

She visited the North of the Emerald Isle.

17 years have gone by so soon -When in 69 man landed on the Moon,

And Liz & Phil were now heading

To 72 and their Silver Wedding.

The Royals and The nation in one accord

Saw 76 bring us all THE CONCORDE.

Only one year later it was to be

Her Majesty the Queens SILVER JUBILEE.

Charles and Di wed in 81,

And by 82 Andrew to FALKLANDS had gone.The ANNUS HORRIBILLIS was 92 -

The fire at Windsor, and a year she would rue!

At times shes been close to desperation,

As Government and kids cause exasperation.

We must get over it, its only a blipShe stoically says with that stiff upper lip.

Channel tunnel now ready in 94

Opening up Europe through another door.

Off to France we can now all be heading -

Hang on its 97 and a royal GOLDEN WEDDING.

2002 sees the Queens Golden Jubilee,

And street parties are thrown, with a sit-down tea.

She fair does us proud, dont you know,

When in 2006 she reaches the big 8.0.

She attends the New Wembley in 2007,

Royal Ascot, too, which she thinks is just heaven!

When in 2010 we see nothing finer,

Than the launch of the Queen Elizabeth Liner.

Never forgetting Britannia, the Royal yacht,

Memories from which the Queen has never forgot,

And it was there Zara had a pre-wedding do

Reminiscent of earlier times for the crew.

And in 2011 the whole countrys excited,When Grandson Williams love is plighted,

As he wed Kate Middleton, a beautiful girl,

Who definitely set our hearts a-whirl.

And now before it gets too late,

Join with me as we celebrate.A more glorious reign has there ever been?

Long may it continue for our DIAMOND QUEEN!!

Meltham Group July

Meltham Trip to SkiptonOh what a wet morning for our trip to Skipton. The

weather didnt put off the 48 members who did go

on the trip, nor did it dampen their spirits.

After driving through floods to reach Skipton the

rain stopped for us to alight from the coach & get

onto the narrow boat for our trip on the canal. The members enjoyed a welcome cup of tea

or coffee & biscuits whilst relaxing on the narrow boat & listening to the history of themills & the canal in that area.

After a short walk we all enjoyed Fish n Chips with bread & butter, tea or coffee. Vanilla

Ice Cream for dessert with a choice of 3 sauces in the Bizzie Lizzie Restaurant. The rafflewas drawn after the meal.

I would like to say a BIG thank you to all the volunteers who helped the less able members

on & off the bus & boat. Especially to 2 non-members Janet for the use of her Mums

wheelchair for other members & Alistair for his muscle.

Another BIG thank you needs to go to The Crossroads Project in Meltham who awarded500 to the Meltham F/F Group. We very much appreciated all the work the volunteers do

in the Crossroad Shop which made this possible. Some of this money paid for the coach forour trip to Skipton.

Holmfirth Project6th July 2012

Jill joined us for bothmorning and afternoon towork on the DiamondYears project. Memberswere looking at fashion inthe 1950s and in particularworking on drawings ofdresses and choosing suit-able fabrics that theywould like their model towear.

While this was going on

with half the membersShirley B told the otherhalf, with photographs,about her daughter Katesordination the Sunday be-fore at Durham Cathedral.

Janet then followed upwith some information,books and photographsabout mosaics, a reminder

that the mosaics they hadmade were part of a tradi-

tion going back 5.000years.

After a lovely lunchthe groups changedover.

We welcomed two newmembers today Muri-el and Laurence. Murielhas not been to any ofour groups before andsettled in well. Laurenceis already a regular atthe Mens Group andthe Holmfirth Meal.

Jill came again for the

morning session andcontinued work on thedrawings this in-volved reproducing thefabric members hadchosen for their dress-es spots worked wellbut some of the flowersand checks were quitedemanding. Jill had

some magic crayonswhich turned into paint

Another will we, won't we day? But being Yorkshire folk and cloudy but dry we got on withit. Low Moor Bird Sanctuary this week. Binocs needed. It was a bit of a disappointment thatthe seagulls seem to have taken over and whether they have scared the other birds away orwhat I don't know but the wild flowers were more prominent than the birds. Wild orchids and

water lilies - lovely. We did manage to get to the bittern viewing spot where a mother bitternhad been away from her nestlings for nearly 2 hours and was expected back any minute. Ofcourse she must have seen us and decided that we were not worth showing herself off to, sono sight there either. We met a man in the cafe who had come to view a little after us and hesaid she had not turned up at all, so what she was up to is anyone's business. I bet her ba-bies were grumbling. Tea and cakes in the cafe just as it started raining! Aren't we the luckyones?

After lunch we returned the mosa-ics to everyone with a bit of guess-work as to who was who for the ab-sentees they were finished quite awhile ago and not everyone hadseen the exhibition at North LightGallery.

Olympic Rag Rug and the Olympic torch

On Tuesday July 10th the rag rugging group met up at

Kirkroyds Infants again, but this week, there was an excit-

ing extra dimension to the visit! Dr Judith Hooper, Direc-

tor of Public Health for NHS Kirklees and Kirklees Coun-

cil, proudly carried the Olympic flame through

Kexbrough.

Friend to Friend contacted Dr Hooper and invited her to

bring the Olympic torch to the intergenerational project at

Kirkroyds school, she kindly agreed. Judith passed the

torch around the children and Friend to Friend members .

We continued on the Olympic rag rug whilst Chris Woods,

Headteacher led a question and answer session. The chil-

dren had some amazing questions and we all learned such

a lot about the torch. Do you know why there are 8,000

holes in the torch? Dr Hooper explained that there is one

hole for each of the runners who have carried the torch

around the country. Someone also asked an excellent ques-

tion: Why is the torch triangular in shape? The designers

of the torch (Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby) found that

there were a lot of trinities in the history of the relay. This

is the third time that the Games have been held in Lon-don1908, 1948 and 2012; the Olympic motto is faster,

higher, stronger; and the vision of this years Games is to

unite sport, education and culture. All these threes lead

them to develop a three-sided design. What a good ques-

tion from a little one!

We were all very excited to touch the torch and were sur-

prised at how heavy it felt.

Thank you to the school for hosting such a lovely

session.

congratulations to one of our volunteers,

Shirley Boardman , whose daughter

Kathryn has recently been ordained inthe diocese of Durham.. Kathryn will be

curate of St Marys Heworth in Gates-

head. During her new ministry in Gates-

head, she will be serving the people of

Heworth, Pelaw and Bill Quay at St

Marys. She will also be able to follow

her beloved Newcastle United more

closely now!Congratulations Kathryn from all at

Friend to Friend.

Honley group receive a donation!

Honley YBS gave a donation to the Honley branch of Friend to Friend as part of

the companys Charity Choices scheme. Customers voted from a shortlist of

charities for YBS support and Friend to Friend received a very welcome 200.

The Honley Village Trust and the Holme Valley Transport Scheme also benefited

from a donation. The Honley branch of Friend to Friend was nominated by one

of our volunteers, Isabel Green.

Being the second Friday in the monthNetherton and Denby Dale Groups wereable to get together for a 'Jubilee' lunchat The North Light Galleries. We were ofcourse, greeted by the Queen who nev-er stopped smiling the whole afternoon,mind youher eyes never blinked or hermouth never openedat all either. I justwondered whether she was putting on amask. The Netherton members worered, white and blue, Enid Hill had madea beautiful Jubilee Hat and Shirley John-ston came as the Queen!

Denby Dale showed off their hand madeby Dorethea brooches to mark the dayand Jean had understood that we had tosupply some buntin, so she came withsome bun tins on her head!

We started the party with atasty buffet. Then the Song Birds came on to entertainus with their songs which we could sing along to or just tap our feet when we forgotthe words. Marvellous. Then, of course we could not escape, without testing ourbrains about the Royals and their history. The winner managed 25/30 which was

very good, as 5 people drew and we had to have a tie-

break.

Thank you Jean formaking up the Quiz.

It was a really pleasant afternoon and very good to meet new people who belong tothe wider Friend to Friend. Thank you to Jane for doing all the arrangements andgetting it altogether. Here's to the next Jubilee or hopefully something before 60years are up.

Hello everyone the Marsden group send their best wishes to you all. We are hoping that the long

promised summer is just around the corner and the relentless rain stops for a while; we are look-

ing forward to at least some warm sunny days very soon!A warm sunny day in Marsden!

Activities SessionWe did a really interesting quiz that challenged our memories of show business personalities.

The quiz was about celebrity sayings, we had to identify the celebrity from their famous saying,

for example who used to start his act by saying Hello my darlings(the answer is at the bottom of

the page). Members worked in pairs and they managed to get most of the answers correct. One

group scored 18 out of 20 and the other groups were close behind, which was excellent. It was a

fun quiz and it generated discussion of all the celebrities concerned.

We then talked about the cost of living in the 1950s and compared it to that of today. Liz

(volunteer) had a list about what things cost in the 1950s which was very interesting when you

realise just how much the same things cost today.

We talked about the cost of food, gas and electricity and many other things. We noted that whilst

the average wage was much lower in the 1950s commodities and utilities still seemed much

cheaper in comparison to the cost of the same things in 2012.

Cynthia (volunteer) then moved on to the next activity. Members were asked to write down one of

their favourite memories. Members were then asked to talk to the group about their favourite

memory. We really enjoyed listening to the happy memories of events in the lives of our mem-

bers. Mary talked about her special wedding in Gretna Green and Audrey talked about how her

mother, who was a dressmaker, managed to get the material to make her a beautiful weddingdress. Shelia talked about her fantastic holiday on a cruise ship at Christmas and the New Year

and the amazing firework displays.

Other members talked about their joy at having children and grandchildren. Joyce talked touch-

ingly of her search for her fathers grave in Egypt and how she managed to find it. It was a really

good activity that finished the session on a very happy note.ReminiscencesWe had a good session which started with a discussion of childhood games. We talked about

whip and top, hopscotch, two ball (against a wall), marbles and skipping and how these games

were played in the school playground and outside the home with friends. Then the members

were asked if they could remember any playground rhymes, we gave one example and then they

got into groups of four to talk about the rhymes they used whilst playing childhood games.

Each group then read out the rhymes that they had remembered. As each group recited a rhyme

most of us were able to join in and recite it with them. An example of one that we all knew was as

follows:

I'm a little tea potShort and stoutHere is my handleHere is my spoutWhen I get all steamed upHear me shoutJust tip me over and pour me out.

We even remembered the actions to the rhyme! We also recited rhymes for other games such

as those used for skipping, for example: I'm a little girl guide dressed in blue, Here are the actions

I must do, Salute to the captain, Bow to the queen, Turn my back on the washing machine, I cando the tap dance, I can do the splits. I can do the holka polka, Just like this. This same rhyme can

start with Im a little Dutch girl rather than girl guide, we learned that the words of the rhymes

varied according to area.

It was a very interesting activity and there were so many other rhymes that we have collectedthem all together and we plan to put them into a booklet. If any other groups know any play-ground rhymes we will be delighted to look at them as they may be different to ours. They couldperhaps be handed into the office.

Honley Group

We welcomed a new member of the group today, Judy Grundy. We hope she en-

joyed the afternoon and we look forward to seeing her again.

We started with tea and coffee as usual and then we tackled an Olympic Gamesquiz. It was not too well received at first as everyone seemed to be suffering from

Olympic overload. However, after a few moments, the competitive spirit took a

hold and we all got to grips with the questions. Some even said they had learnt

something afterwards and the winning score was nearly a full house!

It was also Liz Roberts 90th birthday. We sang happy birthday to her and she of-

fered us some delicious cake so, of course, we had to have another cuppa! The af-

ternoon ended with some poetry readings and a discussion about us Brits and whatmakes us British. Shirley had some interesting comments.
