CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — Concor-dia Seminary in suburban St. Louisgets an eclectic mix of students ina program allowing them to trainfor the ministry online — electri-cians, farmers, entrepreneurs —and even a founder of one of thebest-known thrash metal bands.

David Ellefson plays bass forMegadeth. He also is an online stu-dent in the Specific Ministry Pro-gram at Concordia Seminaryoperated by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch(http://bit.ly/wGuzF1 ) reportedthat Ellefson’s studies illustratewhy distance learning programs atseminaries have a growing popu-larity nationwide, allowing stu-dents to attend divinity schoolswithout uprooting their lives.

Even in a non-traditional learn-ing setting, Ellefson is a non-tradi-tional student given his band hasrecorded albums with titles suchas “Killing Is My Business ... AndBusiness Is Good!”

The curious mix of rock and re-ligion has been part of Ellefson’slife since childhood. Growing up inMinnesota, his family drove fromtheir farm to Our Savior’sLutheran Church each Sunday.Ellefson, now 47, was confirmedthere at age 16.

A few years later, in the sum-mer of 1983, Ellefson moved to LosAngeles and within a week of hisarrival had formed Megadeth,named for the unit of measure-ment equal to the death of 1 mil-lion people by nuclear explosion.Soon, he was playing bass on stagewith other metal bands such asMetallica and Slayer.

The rock star lifestyle caughtup with Ellefson by the time hewas 25. He entered a 12-step recov-ery program and was reintroducedto his faith. And he embraced it.

Ellefson moved to Arizona,married and had children. Hejoined Shepherd of the DesertLutheran Church, a LutheranChurch-Missouri Synod congrega-tion in Scottsdale.

“I came from a good family, nota broken home,” said Ellefson, 47.“That became a model for me, andI saw church at center of it.”

Shepherd of the Desert pastorJon Bjorgaard asked Ellefson tostart a contemporary worshipservice. Ellefson began to writesongs using lyrics from the OldTestament.

“For a Christmas service, Iremixed some classics, not quitein a Megadeth fashion, but in apretty heavy rock fashion,” Ellef-son said.

He started a new music min-istry at the church and called itMEGA Life. It became so popularthat Shepherd of the Desertbought a new space for the min-istry.

Last year, Bjorgaard asked Ellef-son and MEGA Life director Je-remy DaPena to enroll inConcordia’s Specific Ministry Pro-gram.

“Most people want to become arock star,” Bjorgaard said. “David’sa rock star who wants to become apastor.”

After two years at Concordia,Ellefson will be eligible for ordina-tion.

More than 100 students are en-rolled in the distance learning pro-gram, director David Wollenburgsaid. The program is open only tothose who have been sponsoredby someone already working in theministry.

Classes include “Lutheran Dis-tinctions,” “Preaching I & II,” “In-troduction to Worship” and“Scripture and Faith.” Studentsrange in age from 35 to the late60s.

Eliza Brown of the Associationof Theological Schools said thetrend of distance learning at divin-ity schools “is definitely growing,”though there is some debate aboutits merits.

“Some feel you can’t be ade-quately formed as a church leaderunless you’re engaged in a residen-tial program that has serious face-to-face formation components,”she said. Still, 124 seminaries ac-credited by the organization offersome form of distance education.

Megadeth remains and theband will begin a new tour withMotorhead next week in New Jer-sey. Ellefson will tend to his stud-ies during down time on the tourbus. He knows it won’t be easy.

Classes begin each Monday,though homework is posted a fewdays earlier. On Tuesday nights,Ellefson and eight other studentssit in online for a two-hour live ses-sion with a professor teachingfrom a Concordia classroom. Oncea week he meets with Bjorgaard todiscuss the week’s work. And latein the week, he uploads homeworkfor the professor to grade.

He has learned to keep his faithand his onstage persona separate.As for songwriting, he now tries to‘stay away from darker themes.”

“Some people want to morphthings together into one, but Ihave a hand in both worlds,” hesaid. “I love praise and worshipmusic, and I love heavy metal.”
