Turning of the Sod What an amazing morning we had on Wednesday. We made history! We are building Portarlington’s Forever

School and one day, generations into the future will look back on what we are achieving as history. It really is just

exciting to be part of this very special process. We were streamed live on the Deputy Premier’s Facebook platform.

We have been congratulated on many government and media/press Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages.

It was our pleasure to host the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, the Honourable James Merlino and the

Minister for Police, Minister for Water and our Local Member, the Honourable Lisa Neville to help us to turn the

first sod in readiness to start the building of our new school. Preps -Jak, Laney, Oliver and Zoe together Year 6

School Captains- Aaron, Alexander, Devon and Eleni helped the grown-ups with the spades!

Taking pride in our history and respecting the past is a critical design aspect of our new school. Bryon Powell,

aboriginal elder from the Wathaurong people came and performed the traditional welcome and spoke to the

children about the significance of our land and our deep, deep historical connection to the bay. He then performed a

traditional smoking ceremony. We were very fortunate to have Gil and Darren Allbutt representing the history of

our school. Gil was born and bred in Portarlington and attended our school in the heritage building as a prep in

1937. The Allbutt family were foundation students at the very first Portarlington Primary in the 1870’s and the

family is recorded in different areas of school history such as the first school roll and in photographs.

The children have been learning all about the significance of the ‘turning of the sod’ event in the lead up to our

ceremony and so they were all fully engaged and attentive the whole time. We were just so proud of our children.

Thank you to Karen Bourke- Finn who spoke on behalf of the School Council and our community. Thank you also

to the school councillors and parents/ family members who were able to attend and support us. A big

congratulations to the staff for all their commitment to organising different aspects of the ceremony. In particular

Jackie Kaiser, Lisa Gale, Jo Twomey and Chris Hester. Our grounds were immaculately prepared for the day by

PORT PS PINK DAY RAISES RECORD FUNDS FOR BREAST

CANCER RESEARCH- $1012.57c IN HONOUR OF

MARG McCOMBE Every year Pink Day Leaders are announced at our final assembly. They

are responsible for getting a team together to raise money in honour of

Marg McCombe who was a teacher at our school for many years. Marg lost

her battle with breast cancer and since 2012 teams of senior students have

organised activities to raise funds that have been donated to the Breast

Cancer Foundation in Marg’s name. The children learn that doctors and

scientists are working very hard in many areas of health and medicine to

try and find cures for sickness and disease.

This year, Georgia Browne and Remi McCrae were our leaders and Reia

and Kenny supported them as their Pink Team. They organised a sausage

sizzle, pink cup-cakes and pink milk. They made little pink ribbons and

ordered hair chalk to sell. They chalked and painted faces at play time. Our

school was a sea of pink with all the dress-ups.

Congratulations to Georgia and Remi and a big thank you to their parents

Ray and Tina Brown (for coordinating the BBQ and organising the milk),

and to Chantelle and Mike Nelson and Remi’s nan for baking all the

cupcakes. Thank you to Jo Twomey, Reia and Kenny and also to Nathan

Robinson, Logan Bustard-Hill, Alex Chambers and Ruby Walters for your

help. Thank you to all the children, families and staff who dressed up,

bought food and products. A sincere and special thank you to Marcus

Rosman, brother Lincoln and mum Kirsty for the donation of $120 and to

Shirley our school cleaner for her donation of $20- we hope a cure is found

very soon. Lastly, we are very, very grateful for the work of Lisa Gale who

provided enormous support for our event. Thank you Lisa- you are

sensational and a special part of our school.

bay 93.9 Bethany Giving Tree Appeal

11 November to 9 December 2016

Christmas – traditionally a time of joy and celebration – can be a difficult period for many in our community who are suffering personal hardship.

Help us spread some joy this festive season by supporting the 16th annual bay 93.9 Bethany Giving Tree Appeal! Leave a gift under our tree at Portarlington Primary School.

What you can do

Leave a new, unwrapped present, voucher or gift card at any giving tree location between 11 November and 9 December 2016.

Who should you buy for?

We are grateful for donations of gifts for girls, boys, women and men.

Please consider donating a gift card or voucher and provide someone with the opportunity to select a gift which is perfect for them.

Toys, books, stationery, sporting goods, baby items and non-perishable Christmas food products in sealed packaging are also appropriate.

How will your gift get to those who need it most?

Bethany Community Support works with seven partner agencies to help distribute donated gifts to the families who need them most.

Our partner agencies are Barwon Child, Youth & Family; Diversitat; MacKillop Family Services; Minerva Community Services; Salvo Connect Barwon; St Laurence and Wauthaurong Aboriginal Cooperative.

STOP THE MOZZIES!

In Spring and Summer mosquitoes are most active around Portarlington and St Leonards. Our beautiful coastline has lots of protected wetlands that are perfect breeding sites for mosquitoes. The heavy rains have brought more water into the mosquito breeding sites, so we are expecting more mosquitoes this year. The City of Greater Geelong (local council) has a program to help manage the number of mosquitos in Portarlington, St Leonards and other areas. The main areas on the Bellarine Peninsula that council works on to manage mosquitoes are wetlands and reserves like in Swan Bay, Edwards Point and Ramblers Road. Council aims to keep mosquitoes at moderate levels, but due to our unique coastline there will be mosquitoes around at all times of the year. These are some simple things you can do to protect yourself and your family against mosquitoes: Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing when outdoors- mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours Use mosquito repellents containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin, check the labels to find out more Try to limit outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are about (usually dusk and dawn) Make sure there is no stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed around your home- in things like

buckets, toys, pot plant bases Keep your yard and garden well maintained, mosquitoes like shady areas with lots of plants and trees On holidays make sure where you are staying is properly fitted with mosquito netting or screens Ensure openings to rainwater tanks are covered. Check the website below for more information on mosquitoes, including a film clip on what we do in our program: www.geelongaustralia.com.au/mosquitoes

For those who prefer to use natural repellents, Google “natural mosquito repellents” and you will find some simple solutions using herbs, garlic, ingredients from your pantry and also some useful plants.
