TAIPEI (AFP) - Taiwan's Fox-conn has admitted that it can-not meet strong demand forApple's new iPhone 5 due todifficulties in building thegadget, as investors grow con-cerned about the US giant's fu-ture earnings.

They added that the designof the iPhone 5, of which fivemillion were sold over itslaunch weekend in September, has made production difficult, but did not elaborate.

The iPhone has been a hugedriver of Apple's phenomenalprofits, along with the iPad,both of which are made byFoxconn, which also manu-factures products for otherfirms such as Nokia, Intel andSony.

Apple has also faced muchcriticism since the launch ofthe iPhone 5, following a num-ber of problems.

The consumer price index(CPI) for August 2012 regis-tered a 2.8 percent decrease, compared to the same monthof 2011. The main contributorsto this drop were housing, clothing & footwear, andhousehold operation. Exclud-ing the effect of food and en-ergy (which partly affects thehousing and transport compo-nents), the core CPI showed a0.7 percent decrease comparedto August 2011, brought aboutby declines in the index cate-gories of clothing, householdoperation and recreation andculture. The 12-month averageinflation rate reached 3.6 per-cent in August 2012, downfrom 4.4 percent in July 2012.

The number of stay-overvisitors totaled 83,721 in Au-gust 2012, 5.4 percent higherthan in August 2011. Thisgrowth was caused by in-creases of 6.3 percent (+2,715visitors) and 9.9 percent(+2,381 visitors) in the numberof visitors from North Americaand Latin America, respec-tively. The growth in the NorthAmerican market resultedfrom hikes in arrivals from theUnited States and Canada of,respectively, 4.3 percent

(+1,805 visitors) and 56.3 per-cent (+910 visitors). The ex-pansion in the Latin Americanmarket segment was attributedmostly to an increase in visi-tors from Venezuela of 13.4percent (+2,217 visitors). Incontrast, the number of visitorsfrom the European market fellby 6.9 percent to 8,309. Thenumber of cruise visitorssurged by 6,244 or 117.6 per-cent to 11,552 in the month ofAugust 2012 compared to thesame month of the previousyear. The number of ship callspicked up slightly from 6 to 7in August 2012 compared toAugust 2011.

In August 2012, registeredtax revenue totaled Afl. 73.9million, an increase of Afl. 7.4million or 11.1 percent, com-pared to the same month of theprevious year. This growth wasassociated mostly with surgesin revenue from profit, incomeand land tax of, respectively,Afl. 7.2 million, Afl. 3.0 mil-lion and Afl. 2.4 million. Incontrast, revenue from wagetax and gambling licenses fellby, respectively, Afl. 4.2 mil-lion and Afl. 2.1 million. For-eign exchange tax andturnover tax (BBO) also noteda slight drop of, respectively,Afl. 0.3 million and Afl. 0.1million. In addition, non-taxrevenue recorded a decline ofAfl. 5.2 million in August 2012compared to the same monthof last year.

ORANJESTAD -- The Cen-trale Bank van Aruba (CBA)concludes in its Monthly Bul-letin of August 2012 that broadmoney contracted by Afl. 24.3million to Afl. 3,136.9 million, resulting from an Afl. 33.4 mil-lion drop in net foreign assets(excluding revaluation differ-ences of gold and foreign ex-change holdings) to Afl.1,041.8 million. This decreasewas partially offset by an Afl.9.1 million rise in net domesticassets to Afl. 2,095.1 million atthe end of August 2012. Thedecline in net foreign assetswas caused by net outflows re-lated to both current and capi-tal transactions. Currenttransactions resulted in an Afl.17.2 million net outflow of for-eign funds, due mainly to pay-ments for the import of goodsand services, and interest pay-ments, which were partiallyoffset by gross tourism re-ceipts. Capital transactionsrecorded a net outflow of for-eign funds of Afl. 16.2 million, attributed mostly to net trans-fers to foreign accounts of res-ident companies. The increasein the domestic component ofthe money supply was associ-ated with an Afl. 22.7 milliongrowth in domestic credit andan Afl. 13.6 million decline innon-credit related balancesheet items. Domestic creditgrew as a result of an Afl. 24.1million rise in the net liabilityof the public sector to thebanking sector, attributed todecreases in government’s de-posits and develop - ment fundsof, respectively, Afl. 17.4 mil-lion and Afl. 6.7 million. DAMASCUS (AFP) - A defiantPresident Bashar al-Assad re-jected on Thursday calls he seeka safe exit, vowing he would"live in Syria and die in Syria,"as fighting raged in Damascus. "Iam not a puppet. I was not madeby the West to go to the West orto any other country," Assad saidin English in an interview withRussian state-backed RT televi-sion."I am Syrian, I was made inSyria, I have to live in Syria anddie in Syria," he said, according to transcripts posted on RT'swebsite. On Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameronfloated the idea of granting Assad safe passage from the country, saying it "could be arranged," although he wanted the Syrianleader to face international justice.Assad also warned against aforeign intervention in Syria's escalating conflict, saying such amove would have global consequences and shake regional sta-bility. "We are the last stronghold of secularism and stability inthe region... it will have a domino effect that will affect the worldfrom the Atlantic to the Pacific," the transcript said. Many inSyria's opposition, including rebels waging fierce battles withpro-regime forces, have urged world powers to intervene to stopthe escalating bloodshed. The Observatory says more than37,000 people have died since the uprising against Assad eruptedin March 2011, first as a protest movement and then an armedrebellion after the regime cracked down on demonstrations.

2008.Rebels have asked for fel-

low FARC member SimonTrinidad, serving a 60-year-sentence in the US for thesame kidnappings, to be par-doned so he can participate inthe talks.

On Wednesday, the dayafter President BarackObama's re-election for a sec-ond term, the rebels appealedto him directly for Trinidad'srelease. The US has so far re-fused.

The inclusion of Nijmeijer -- the rebels' only known Euro-pean recruit -- among thepeace talk delegates was alsocontroversial. It was seen bythe government side as an at-tempt by FARC to curry favorin Europe and bolster its inter-national image.

FARC is classified as a ter-rorist organization by theUnited States and the Euro-pean Union.

She dismissed Colombia'sallegations against her.

"All these legal excusesdon't stand up -- they're all po-litical. It makes them mad thata foreigner is involved in theconflict and speaks positivelyabout the FARC," she said.

Asked about her privatelife, the young woman de-flected, saying "it's been 10years since I got married to thethe people's army, and that'sfine with me."

Founded in 1964 and LatinAmerica's largest rebel groupwith 9,200 armed fighters, theFARC may be ready for peaceafter a long string of setbacks.

In recent years, the grouphas suffered the capture andkilling of some of its top lead-ers, and the depletion of itsranks to half what they were attheir peak in the 1990s.

These are to be the firstpeace negotiations in a decadeafter three previous failed at-tempts.

SOFIA — Bulgarian archaeologists have unearthed atrove of gold objects from the late fourth or early thirdcentury BC in the northeast of the country, the team chiefsaid Thursday. The objects found near the village ofSveshtari included a gold tiara engraved with a lion'shead and other animals, bracelets, a ring and gold horsetack ornaments, and were dug up overnight, she said. They most likely belonged to the Getes tribe of the Thra-cians, skilled goldsmiths who inhabited lands extendingfrom the Caucasus to southwest Europe and who are stillveiled in mystery. The Getes inhabited the region fromthe second millennium BC to the third century AD. A lav-ish tomb of the tribe discovered in 1982 in Sveshtari islisted as a UNESCO world heritage site.

HAVANA (AFP) - Tanja Ni-jmeijer, a Dutch woman whofights alongside Colombia'sFARC rebels, hopes to seepeace and social justice in thecountry thanks to peace talksset to begin next week.

"We have a lot of hope thatat last the Colombian govern-ment will consent to the re-forms the country needs andthat at last, peace can reign,"Nijmeijer told AFP in an ex-clusive interview the day afterher arrival in Cuba, where sheis to participate in the negotia-tions opening November 15.

Her vision, she said, is formore than an end to fighting:"not only silencing of weapons-- peace with social justice."

The 34-year-old, speaking inperfect Spanish, honed duringher decade in the jungle with theRevolutionary Armed Forces ofColombia (FARC), said she wasexcited to be in Cuba, the onlysingle-party communist state inthe Americas.

"I've always wanted to seeCuba," she confessed with a

bright grin. She used her firstday in Havana to tour the oldcity along with other FARCmembers, including FARCnumber two Ivan Marquez.

"Cuba is an example for theworld. Here, one doesn't seepoverty in the street. Peopleare well-dressed, and therearen't beggars," Nijmeijersaid.

Designated a spokeswomanfor the Marxist guerrilla groupduring the negotiations, theDutch woman was the last ofthe rebel delegates to arrive inCuba.

She translates for the rebels, teaches Marxist principles andhelps with public communica-tions.

In Cuba the talks will startwith the thorny issue of ruraldevelopment. Colombia haswide income disparities, withmany rural areas lacking basicservices and infrastructure.

The talks will also addressland distribution. Colombia'scountryside is full of largeplots mostly owned by thewealthy and little land is avail-able to small farmers whowant their own plots.

Land reform was at theheart of a peasant uprising inthe 1960s that saw the forma-tion of FARC. Access to farm-land remains an importantissue in a country where halfthe population lives inpoverty.

The four other main pointson the agenda are the rebels'future role in political life, adefinitive end to hostilities, fighting the illegal drug tradeand the situation of victims.

As with other delegates,Colombia's attorney generalhad to lift arrest warrantspending against Nijmeier.

She is also sought by theUS for the 2003 kidnapping ofthree Americans -- held cap-tive for five years before beingfreed in a daring operation byColombian commandos in

fought again, was never thesame boxer.

"In all the obvious ways, hewas haunted," Americansportswriter Mark Kriegel, au-thor of a new biography ofMancini titled "The GoodSon," told AFP in a telephoneinterview.

"He also got over it. Thecomplications for Ray havemore to do with the fact that therest of the world didn't get overit and continued using that fightas a kind of reference point forhis life," Kriegel said.

Kriegel's book, and an ac-companying documentary ofthe same name, climax with anemotional reunion in June lastyear between Mancini andKim's family.

Kim's fiancee, Lee Young-Mee, had been pregnant at thetime of the 1982 title fight andseven months later gave birthto a son, Kim Jiwan, now 29.

While being interviewed byKriegel for the book, Jiwan hadsuggested a trip to the UnitedStates to meet with Mancini.

"As full of duty and obliga-tion as Ray was, he wasn'tgoing to turn down a requestfrom the son of the man who, without intention, died at hishands," Kriegel said.

At the meeting in Mancini'shome, Jiwan admitted to the"hatred" he once felt for theboxer, before absolving him ofany blame.

"I think it was not yourfault," he said.

The Kim-Mancini boutproved to be a watershed inboxing, triggering a series ofmajor changes to the sport.

Championship bouts werereduced from 15 to 12 rounds, the standing eight-count wasintroduced and the medicaltests required of boxers beforea fight were overhauled.

On the flight back to SouthKorea, a traumatised KimYoon-Gu locked himself in thetoilet and "cried and cried untilwe landed.

"I thought about quitting thesport entirely. In the end, I de-cided to stick with it, but it wasa very, very difficult time," hesaid at his gym where photosand posters of Kim Duk-Kooadorn the walls.

-- Suicide, depression andredemption --

The consequences of theKim-Mancini bout were far-reaching and tragic in their ownright.

Four months after her son'sdeath, Kim's distraught motherkilled herself by drinking a bot-tle of pesticide.

Four months after that, ref-eree Richard Green also tookhis own life, although therewas no indication that his sui-cide was linked to the outcomeof the fight for which he wasnever held in any way respon-sible.

Tuesday's seven hoursof talks were followed bymore than five hours ofbargaining on Wednesdayat an undisclosed locationin New York City.

Neither side divulgeddetails of the talks, butsaid they would continue.

Club owners and play-ers have remained dead-locked on how to divide$3.3 billion in revenuessince the old contract ex-pired on September 15.

The league has alreadywiped out the first 326 reg-ular-season gamesthrough November 30 andthe Winter Classic out-door game that had beenscheduled for New Year'sDay as a result of thestalemate.

With 26.5 percent ofgames already scrapped, the latest talks were seenas a hopeful step in tryingto avoid a repeat of the bit-ter 2004-2005 dispute, when an entire seasonwas lost to money issuesfor the only time in NorthAmerican sport history.More games figure to be

SEOUL, South Korea (AFP) -Thirty years ago this month,South Korean boxer Kim Duk-Koo entered a Las Vegas ringfor a world championship boutthat would end with his death, trigger at least one suicide andchange the sport forever.

For a generation of SouthKoreans, millions of whomwatched live on television, thefight between Kim and worldlightweight champion, Ray"Boom Boom" Mancini, re-mains a powerful memory.

Now a new book and ac-companying documentary thatcoincide with the 30th anniver-sary hope to shed fresh light onthe bout, its tragic aftermathand the impact it had on thelives and families of its twoprotagonists.

For Kim, then 23 and fight-ing for the first time in theUnited States, the glitz of Cae-sar's Palace with its celebrityaudience including the likes ofFrank Sinatra, was a differentuniverse from his impover-ished upbringing in Korea.

"I remember when welanded in Las Vegas for thefight," his trainer, Kim Yoon-Gu, now 56, recalled.

"The city was all lit up atnight. It was like landing on agarden of flowers in the desert. We'd never seen anything likeit," he told AFP at the boxinggym he runs in Seoul.

US boxing commentatorshad pretty much written KimDuk-Koo off before the No-vember 13, 1982 clash withMancini, a powerful 21-year-old from Youngstown, Ohiomaking his second defence ofthe world title.

But Kim was confident. Be-fore leaving Seoul he had a car-penter rig up a mock coffinwhich he said he would use tobring back Mancini after the

fight.Unimpressed with such

bravado, his trainer stomped itto pieces which he then hidunder the ring in Kim's trainingcamp.

-- A brutal fight --The fight when it came was

a particularly brutal one.For 13 rounds, the two men

went toe-to-toe in a sluggingmatch that left both with badlyswollen faces and struggling tosee through bruised, puffed-upeyes.

At the end of the 13th, KimYoon-Gu tried to lift hisfighter, telling him Manciniwas exhausted and exhortinghim to put in one last effort tofinish him off.

"He clenched his teeth, nod-ded and said 'Yes, I'll do that'.And that was it. That was thelast thing he ever said," Kimsaid.

At the beginning of the14th, Mancini connected witha straight right that snappedKim's head back and sent himcrashing to the canvas.

The Korean managed tohaul himself up by the ropes tobeat the count, but refereeRichard Green stepped in tostop the fight.

Kim Yoon-Gu had beentending to his corner andmissed the actual knockoutblow, but when he saw Kim onthe ground, he knew at oncethat the fight was over.

"He was obviously hurt, butat that time we had no idea itwas so serious," he said.

Back in his corner, Kim col-lapsed and was taken from thering on a stretcher to hospitalwhere he was diagnosed with ablood clot on the brain and un-derwent emergency surgery.

He lapsed into a coma fromwhich he never recovered andfour days later he died.

LONDON (AFP) - RogerFederer clinched a place in thesemi-finals of the ATP Tour Fi-nals on Thursday as the de-fending champion ground outa 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) win overSpain's David Ferrer at Lon-don's O2 Arena.

Federer required a straightsets win over the fourth seed toseal his spot in the last fourwith one Group B match tospare and he reached that goaldespite a scrappy performancethat included 39 unforced er-rors.

While Federer was someway from his best, the worldnumber two displayed hispriceless knack of elevatinghis game on the big points asthe 31-year-old extended hiswinning run at the Tour Finalsto 12 matches.

As well as securing his

semi-final berth, Federer also

achieved a notable personal

landmark by recording his

70th match win of the year --

the first time he has done that

since he was at the very peak

of his form in 2006.

It was a familiar story for

Ferrer, who has now lost all 14

of his meetings with Federer,

and the Spaniard will need a

victory over Janko Tipsarevic

in his final match on Saturday

to have any chance of qualify-

ing for the semi-finals.

Going into this match Fer-

rer had won only three of 30

sets against Federer and, al-

though he walked on court on

an 11-match unbeaten run that

brought him titles at the Valen-

cia Open and Paris Masters,

the 30-year-old was soon play-

ing second fiddle to the Swiss

yet again.

Another British winner ofEuropean club football's pre-mier competition - defendingchampions Chelsea - kept theirhopes alive of avoiding the hu-miliation of becoming the firstchampions to go out at thegroup stage with a last gasp 3-2 home win over talentedUkrainian side ShakhtarDonetsk.

However, while they top thegroup on goal difference fromShakhtar their fate probably

hangs on their trip to Italianchampions Juventus in a fort-night as their hosts are just apoint behind them having de-molished Nordsjaelland 4-0 inTurin.

The biggest winners of thenight were last season's beatenfinalists Bayern Munich whohumiliated hapless French sideLille 6-1 with Peruvian strikerClaudio Pizarro scoring a hat-trick in the first-half.

Bayern are battling it out onthe same points as Valencia, who also enjoyed an easynight at home beating earlypacesetters BATE Borisov 4-2.
