Final Exams Final exams are scheduled from June 20 to 27. Please do not schedule vacations during this time, as absences for reasons other than medical or legal (with documentation) will result in a zero grade. The exam schedule was distributed in homeroom classes and is also available on the school website and in the main office.
Grade 9 Math EQAO Students taking grade 9 applied or academic level math this semester will be writing the EQAO math assessments on June 14 and 15. This assessment will form 5% of students’ final marks. Please avoid scheduling vacations or appointments on these days. Please contact Ms Baumgartner or Ms Parris if you have any questions. Thanks!
GRADE 9 AND 10 CREDIT STENGTHENING
To Parents/Guardians of Grade 9 and 10 Math and English Students: The Ministry of Education has invited YRDSB to run a pilot project called Credit Strengthening during summer school. The focus of this program will be on supporting grade 9 and 10 Math and English students who have passed the course, but have not obtained provincial standard. Studies have shown that Grade 9 and 10 students who have passed English or Math with a mark between 50 and 69% are at greater risk of failing that subject the following year. In an effort to improve their future success, YRDSB is encouraging grade 9 and 10 Math and English students who achieved below provincial standard to enroll in the two-week Credit Strengthening course offered during the summer. If the student is successful in improving their skills and knowledge through Credit Strengthening, the higher mark will be recorded on their transcript. It is the Board’s expectation that a student’s ability to achieve provincial standard (70% or above) during Credit Strengthening will be considered during pathways discussions (i.e. a student taking academic courses who achieves provincial standard through Credit Strengthening should stay in the academic stream). To find locations where Credit Strengthening is being offered and instructions on how to register, please go to www.yrdsb.ca and click on Secondary Summer School Courses under the Programs and Services tab. For further information, please contact our Guidance Department.
ATMOSPHERE
S.D.S.S. is a model of learning excellence providing a rich diversity of academic and social opportunities. Its
caring, dedicated staff and responsible motivated students encourage the development of values and
character to promote lifelong learning.
News from the Family Studies Department On behalf of the Family Studies Department, I would like to congratulate the Gr. 9’s this semester for all their hard work and perseverance. Throughout the semester we discussed at length the importance of developing their character as young adults. Through the many discussions we had, time and again the word “empathy” surfaced. “Understanding what it feels like to be in another’s shoes”, is an area of personal development that takes time and commitment. We discovered that empathy is not only important in the development of family and friend relationships, it is also important in the development of a strong society. Compassion creates a society that is giving, and being empathetic allows us to “give” without expecting anything back. This semester students worked diligently to learn how to sew in order to create pillowcases that will be donated to the cancer ward at Sick Kids Hospital. Each time a child with cancer goes in for treatment they will receive a new colourful pillowcase to brighten up their room. I am very pleased and proud to say that my wonderful grade 9 class will bring “smiles” to many faces and I would like to thank all the students for their hard work and big hearts. For more information about Ryan’s Case for Smiles, please visit www.caseforsmiles.org “Helping kids feel better to heal better”. Wishing you a very special summer with family and friends! Smoking/Vaping Smoking/vaping is prohibited on school property. However, some students choose to smoke, and they stand on the sidewalk to do so. Students are reminded to not litter or block the sidewalk, so that other pedestrians may pass comfortably, otherwise they may receive a $370 ticket from the Town for breaking town by-law 2003-71.

No Parking / Designated Fire Routes PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN DESIGNATED FIRE ROUTES Any designated Fire Route needs to be clear of vehicles and ready for use by emergency vehicles. In an emergency (fire, medical, lock down etc.) time is of the essence and emergency vehicles need access. Fire Routes are signed “No Parking.” What does that mean? 1. This means that you cannot stop your vehicle and get out of the vehicle even for a short period of time.
2. You must obey the signs at all times regardless of the time of day or night. In 2017, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville will adopt a zero tolerance approach to vehicles parked in designated Fire Routes. By-law Officers, Parking Officers, and Fire Prevention Officers will be issuing tickets when infractions are witnessed, to ensure the safety of all those using our schools and other buildings within the Municipality. If you have questions or concerns, please contact: Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire & Emergency Services at 905-640-9595 OR By-Law Department at 905-640-1900 Ext. 2258
