By Phil Stocker, NSA chief executive

Without wanting toovercook things, there is clearlysome optimismand confidence evi-

dent in the sheep world, and right-ly so. But only a fool would suggestthere will not be challenges ahead, or that profitability is secured.

Some of the challenges – such ascurrency rates and exports, elements of CAP reform and thearrival of the next Schmallenbergequivalent – are outside our con-trol. Others we can do somethingabout, ideally heading them offwell in advance of them causingany problems.

ChallengesPromoting our product hard, presenting our industry to thepublic and politicians in a positivemanner, striving for best practicein all we do, addressing averagecosts of production, tracking and monitoring disease and long-term

planning to overcome CAPchanges are all things we can do tostrengthen our industry.

Some are individual activities, some are collective industry ac-tions and some are Governmentalpartnership responsibilities, but itis only by understanding the chal-lenges and doing something aboutthem we will protect sheep farm-ing and not just survive, but thrive.

So far this year, things are looking good.

Time races by and it will not be

long before things are preparedfor the next production cycle – andnone of us can afford to forget oneof the most important times in thesheep calendar is late summer andearly autumn. Attention to detail is key; getting things rightwill be the foundation for the following lambing.

There is never just one angle oranswer when it comes to sheepfarming, but if there was one mes-sage I would like to get out now itwould be about the need to knowand protect your farm in relationto disease and parasites. If youkeep sheep, you already have aspectrum of challenges and hope-fully this is known and managedeffectively.

What you do not need is to bringany new and unwanted guestsonto your farm, such as an-thelmintic resistant worms, liverfluke or scab, by not properly quar-antining (testing, treating and separating) new stock.

NSA Sheep 2014 will provide in-formation and advice on all thesesubjects and many more.

A welcome fromthe chief executive

Stay focused with Sheep Vision report

The published Sheep Vision report will be distributed to all involved in the sheep sector to highlight where efforts should be focused.

The inaugural NSA and NFU ‘Sheep Vision’ report is not due to be published for another few weeks. However,Farmers Guardian offer some insight into the main points, ahead of its official launch at the NSA Sheep Event.

The two main organisa-tions representing sheepfarmers have joinedforces for the first timeto produce the Sheep

Vision report, which has been described as ‘ground-breaking’.

NSA chief executive PhilStocker says it contains a thor-ough analysis of the needs of thesheep sector and is a crucial steptowards driving the industry forward.

Mr Stocker says: “We areproud of the report. It wouldhave been madness for us to bepulling in opposite directions.

“While it contains no majorsurprises, we have pooled our resources to produce a documentto identify where the industryshould be going.

“The report includes clear, consistent messages, which canbe sent out to relevant organisa-tions and businesses along thesupply chain.

“It will also provide a frame-work to keep us focused on ourmain goal, which is to helpsheep producers make the most

of opportunities which willstrengthen their businesses intimes ahead.”

No vision of the future wouldbe complete without a plan to encourage new entrants, he adds.

“Sheep keeping has several advantages over other farmingenterprises. It requires compar-atively low start-up costs and istherefore more accessible to newentrants than dairy farming, forexample.

“In addition, sheep are not

simply producers of meat. Theyalso have an influential role to play in maintaining the landscape and creating the right conditions for wildlife.”

NFU livestock board chairmanCharles Sercombe says the report emphasises the need forthe industry to react quickly tomarket signals, both at home andabroad. It highlights the need tomaintain, and hopefully expand, the current domestic market, as well as to seek fresh export opportunities abroad.

Mr Sercombe says: “There isconsiderable potential to developnew outlets in regions such as the

Far East and we must create anindustry which can take advan-tage of this.

“It is vital producers do nothave too many unnecessary con-straints imposed on them.

Transparency“We are also pressing for increased transparency furtheralong the supply chain. Produc-ers need precise details of thespecifications and weights theprocessors require and theremust be no ‘rounding down’ ofpayment figures.

“The auction market systemgives instant feedback on prices,

The published report will bedistributed to all involved in thesheep sector, including theGovernment and levy bodies,to highlight where effortsshould be focused to benefitthe industry in future Information will be

disseminated to NSA and NFUmembers and made availableto others online The report is to be revisitedat regular intervals in thefuture, so pressure ismaintained to move the sectorforward

Report facts

but deadweight selling is not soclear-cut and we will be lobbyingto rectify this situation.”

Mr Sercombe says while thereport recognises there may onlybe limited opportunities for increasing the general demandfor sheepmeat, it identifies areasfor the potential improvement offlock performance.

“Our national flock is associ-ated with very high standards ofproduction, but adopting bestpractice measures to enhanceperformance indicators, such aslambing percentages and car-case weights, can lead to greaterprofitability.

“This is also true in terms of the genetic advancement ofbreeding animals. The develop-ment of new technologies, suchas genomics, is great news forsheep farmers.

“We also need to ensure sup-ply matches demand; the effectof an imbalance was evident 18months ago, when prices plum-meted.

“Another issue under scrutinyis adding value to sheepmeat, both at individual farmer leveland within our levy body. Wewant a progressive industry witha bright outlook and the report ispart of this goal.”

We want aprogressiveindustry with abright outlookand the reportis part of thisgoalCHARLES SERCOMBE

NSA SHEEP EVENT6 | FRIDAY JULY 18 2014

This year Farmers Guardian and the National Sheep Association (NSA)have teamed up to run the first Sheep Event video competition. Thefive shortlisted entrants were interviewed by Wendy Short.

Five finalists for first SheepEvent video competitionKATHBirkinshaw farms 600hectares (1,500 acres) with hersister, Andrea Jolly, whofeatures in the video she has puttogether. A keen photographer,Kath jumped at the chance ofspreading the word about thebeautiful landscape in whichshe lives and works. It has taken Kath quite some

time to achieve her ambition tobecome a full-time sheepfarmer, but it has been worththe wait, she says.“My grandfather farmed but

my parents didn’t, so theinterest skipped a generation. Iworked my way up by contractshepherding and dry stone

walling. I still supplement myincome by public speaking and Ihave talked to all sorts ofgroups, including historicalsocieties and Women’s Institutebranches.“From the feedback I get, I

have realised it is not just towndwellers who lackunderstanding about farming;people in rural villages can bejust as confused. We have a lotof work to do to educate thepublic about just how hard it isto successfully rear a crop oflambs. We also need toemphasise the contributionsheep make towardsmaintaining the landscape.

Kath Birkinshaw, Derbyshire

“Farming is a great way to earna living; working with animals isrewarding and sheep farming

taxes your brain and allows youto work outdoors. I would notchange a thing.”

Kate Robinson, Gloucestershire

KATE Robinson’s family have noconnection with farming, butshe has been fascinated bylivestock from an early age.Despite her enthusiasm, shewent to university to studycriminology and psychology.During her degree, she earnedmoney by working on a largefarm close to home, starting offby milking goats and gettinginvolved with lambing. After she graduated, she

began working full-time as ashepherdess on the farm, whichhas a large arable enterprise, aswell as the 1,000-head goatherd, 1,000 breeding ewes and a150-cow suckler herd. The video competition

appealed to Kate, partly becauseit offered her the chance tomake a record of daily life.

“The video footage hascaptured some nice memories. Itake a lot of photos while I amworking and using the video wasjust an extension of that. It mademe realise how lucky I am – notevery job would inspire a workerto take photos regularly.”Kate is happy with her change

of career. “I intended to give upfarming when I got my degree, but I discovered looking afterlivestock is my vocation. But asmuch as I enjoy being aroundsheep, currently I have noambition to have my own flock.“I still have a lot to learn and

the people I work with areextremely knowledgeable, so Iam picking up new informationall the time. I would definitelydescribe farming as a career, rather than a job.”

They also have Belclaresheep, which are derived from amix of breeds including FinnishLandrace, Galway and Lleyn.About half of the lambs producedon the hill unit are finished, withthe remainder sold as stores.Thomas entered the

but I thought the course I chosewould offer more options for thefuture. Environmental supportmakes a contribution to the farmbusinesses and we also havethree holiday cottages.”

While he enjoys all aspects offarming, his favourite task ispreparing sheep for the sale ring.It gives him great satisfaction tosee them looking their best andhopefully attracting some of thehighest bids of the day.An NSA-sponsored trip to New

was more difficult than he hadexpected, but he enjoyed theprocess. “A lot of it involvedbalancing the video camera ongateposts and sheep pens, whileI filmed myself talking about theway we farm,” he says.

JAMESDavison works full-timeon a local dairy unit, while hebuilds up his own flock of sheep, which now totals 150. They grazeon the family’s 14-hectare (35-acre) holding and a number ofrented fields nearby.“My father retired from dairy

farming when I was nine years oldand while I enjoy milking cows, itwould be financially impossible tostart off again as a new entrant,”says 25-year-old James. “But,

sheep offer great opportunitiesfor anyone wanting to earn moneyfrom keeping livestock. “I started out buying 35 broken-

mouthed cross-bred ewes andthis year I have reached my fourthcrop of lambs. Many of my sheepare older, but I am workingtowards having a younger, moreproductive flock.“I tried to keep the video subject

matter general, rather thantechnical. I wanted it to show what

is involved in the daily life of ashepherd. I explained how my flockwas managed and put across themessage other people can do thesame, if they are really dedicated.”In an ideal world, James says

he would like to have 700-800ewes by the time he is 40, whichhe hopes would be sufficient toearn him enough money tosupport himself.“It is a big ambition, but I think it

is good to have a goal in life.”

James Davison, Ballymena

KRISTAMagee does not comefrom a farming background, but neither do two of heruncles and they both now runlarge sheep flocks.Krista has always helped

out, with an aim of having herown flock. It is part of thereason she has taken a wellpaid teaching job in Singapore, where she plans to startsaving to realise her ambition. It took Krista three months

to film life on her uncles’ farms, whose combined flocks totalabout 1,200-head. Pure-bredBlackface, Charollais and thenative Manx Loaghtan are keptin separate groups alongsidecross-breds. Lambs arefinished at home, with apercentage sold through adirect sales boxed scheme. Tokeep the meat cool, the transitboxes are packed usingsheep’s wool. She says: “One of my uncles

Krista Magee, Isle of Man

has four young children who areall keen on the livestock, so theywill be second generationfarmers. My relatives havestarted out with nothing and theyhave built up their flocks steadily.”Krista admits the cash prize

offered by the competition wastempting, but she also hadanother reason for taking part.“I wanted people to see it is not

essential to be born into farming, there are other ways of getting afoot in the door,” she says.

Young Shepherd ofthe Year win leadsto on-farm changes

Rhydian Thomas (centre) with his grandfather Iwan and father Geraint. PICTURES: Arvid Parry Jones

Since leaving universitythree years ago, Rhy-dian Thomas has become the EuropeanYoung Shepherd of

the Year, and this September hewill be competing against topyoung shepherds from acrossthe globe for world title.Farming at Llethr Bledrig,

Carmarthenshire, with his father Geraint and brother Aled, the 24-year-old is also a memberof the NSA’s Young AmbassadorGroup and chairman of CothiShears, a shearing competitionbased in Carmarthen attractingentrants from across the world.Mr Thomas was awarded the

Welsh Young Shepherd of theYear title last year and fromthere he travelled to France, along with seven other topyoung shepherds from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland,to compete at the Europeanchampionships.

The competitors had to com-plete a general examination paper, a test on sheep breeds, two ATV courses, and a lamb selection test, guessing theweight on grade and demon-strating their handling abilityand use of an EID system.

Natural abilityHis skills and natural abilityshone through during the Euro-pean finals, and he went on towin the competition. This Julyhe will be representing Wales inthe UK Young Shepherd finalsand in September will travelback to France for the WorldShepherd of the Year against thebest from New Zealand, Aus-tralia, America and Europe. After returning home from

the European finals, he wasshortlisted for the NSA’s NextGeneration Ambassador Group.Out of 40 candidates, MrThomas was one of 11 young

people, aged between 20 and 33years old, chosen to sit on thecommittee.Mr Thomas says: “I have

already learned a lot, and have im-plemented a rotational grazingsystem after a talk we had on util-ising grazing more efficiently.“Previously we ran the flock on

a ranch system over the wholefarm, but now have split the fieldsinto separate, smaller blocks androtationally graze ewes andlambs. I hope to see some per-formance differences – perhapsimproved lamb performance, areduced worm burden and/or areduction in lameness. The Thomas’ flock at Llethr

Bledrig comprises 550 BeulahSpeckled Face ewes and 100Mules. Of the Beulah ewes, 350are bred pure and the remaining200 are tupped with BluefacedLeicesters.Mr Thomas and his father usu-

ally retain about 150 pure ewe

The flock used to run on a ranch system but Mr Thomas has implemented a rotational grazing system. The farm is home to 30 mostly Limousin cross Friesian suckler cows which are useful for grazing.

Rhydian Thomas is the current European Young Shepherd of the Year and member of the National Sheep Association’s (NSA)Young Ambassador Group. Together with his father, he has made some interesting management changes. Louise Hartley reports.

lambs, but will now select 200 replacements to increase theflock size.“We have taken on more land

this year and have also stoppedtupping ewe lambs to makelambing time more compact and give a more even spread of finished lambs throughout summer.

Lambing“Originally ewe lambs wouldstart lambing at the beginning ofApril, but this could drag on, leav-ing us with small lambs at Christ-

mas, which then needed to behoused to finish.“Ewe lambs are now kept

higher on rough grazing untilthey are brought down for tup-ping as shearlings. Since leav-ing them to grow naturally andtupping them later we have big-ger, stronger hoggs joining theflock,” he says. The aim is to lamb 750 to 800

breeding ewes, taking the totalflock, including hoggs, to 950.About 15 pure lamb rams are

selected and the best six are soldat a society sale in Llandovery

mart at the end of September. The rest of the pure ram lambs,

as well as the surplus pure ewelambs and Mule lambs, are fin-ished and sent to Dunbia from theend of August through to Novem-ber. They are drafted off at about43-44kg, usually between 20 and30 weeks, killing-out at 20-21kg.Some of the lighter shaped lambswere sent at 12 weeks this year, dueto the higher market prices.Mr Thomas says they have

previously sent lambs to auctionmarts and other slaughter houses, but Dunbia is undoubt-

edly the best option for them.He says: “Speckled Faced lambs

do not sell well in the auction because buyers sometimes thinkthey wont kill-out well and have ahigh amount of waste and fat.”

But this is certainly not the casefor the Thomas family’s lambs, which have been consistently bredto be lean, with rams selected ongood conformation and growthrates.

“We don’t just concentrate onthe markings and ear settingswhen buying rams,” says MrThomas.

“Although breed characteristicsare important, mothering in-stincts and good teeth are also taken in to consideration, withbone and body the most impor-tant selection criteria,” he adds.

Dunbia is just 4.5 miles awayfrom Llethr Bledrig. Lambs aretaken in at night and one memberof the Thomas family returns the

next day to watch every singlelamb being killed and graded.

Although not a usual practiseundertaken by sheep farmers, thefamily believe watching theirlambs being graded helps themselect the right lambs for slaugh-ter and keep a close eye on fluke.

Mr Thomas says: “We are in aunique situation with Dunbia soclose to our farm and it is there-fore very handy for us to watchevery batch of lambs go throughfrom live to dead. We have neverdisputed the grading of the lambs, but watching the process helps usidentify which of the lambs wesent were slightly too fat, too thin,or perfectly timed to be sent off-farm.

“We also stand right next to theman who checks the livers forfluke. He can tell us if there is afluke problem in that batch, and ifthere is we can go straight back tothe farm and fluke the rest, if thereis not a problem, we can save money on the drench.”

Mule lambs usually grade out ata mixture of Rs and Us and theSpeckled Faced lambs are expect-ed to consistently grade at R, withthe odd U.

Rearing good quality lambs tothe correct specification is a man-agement focus on the farm, andthe Thomas’ aim to boost profitsby controlling costs.

“Making sure we only spendmoney on products and equip-ment which will give us a return isreally important. We never investin something just because it is agood thing to do – it has be have atangible cost benefit.

“The same applies to machin-ery on the farm. We do not investin big modern tractors because often a cheap, second-hand ma-chine will do the job just as well.We aim to keep away from ma-chinery dealers,” he adds.

Mineral drenchWhile he was studying for a degree in agriculture at Aberyst-wyth University he undertook adissertation project looking at theeffect of mineral and vitamindrench on lamb growth afterweaning.

At the beginning of the experi-ment, which he conducted athome, he weighed and tagged200 lambs and divided them intotwo equal groups of similar ages

and weights. One-hundredlambs received a mineral and vitamin drench, with the remaining 100 acting as a control group. All lambs weremanaged as one single mob, receiving the same worm andfluke drench and clostridial vac-cination and running on exactlythe same grazing.

Lambs were weighed and draft-ed when finished, with Mr Thomasexpecting the lambs which had received the vitamin and mineraldrench to perform better, either byfinishing sooner, and achievinghigher liveweights or killing-outpercentages.

He says: “We measured everyparameter we possibly could, including days to weaning, finish-ing weight, fat classification – butfound absolutely no difference between the two groups.

“I was quite shocked at the results, but my lecturer was not atall. Before the experiment we hadbeen using a lot of drench on-farm, spending more than £1,000per season, and believed it was doing a miracle job.”

On realising it had no effect onthe lambs, Mr Thomas no longer

uses mineral and vitamindrenches on-farm

and says he

has not seen a difference in fin-ishing lamb performance whencompared to previous years. Thisyear he is going to run a simpletrial, bolusing half the ewes witha pre-tupping selenium, cobaltand copper bolus and monitoringscanning percentages.

“I would advise any farmer toconduct a similar simple experi-ment involving the supplementsor feeds they already use, or arethinking about using. Beforemaking a large investment in anyproduct it is worth doing a on-farm trial using a simple mark-ing system.”

I have alreadylearned a lot,and haveimplemented arotationalgrazing systemafter a talk wehad on utilisinggrazing moreefficientlyRHYDIAN THOMAS

The Thomas’ keep away from machinery dealers, believing second-hand ones do the job just as well.
