Safety first by Jeannine Polaski

With the bad activity happening up at Catalyst we want to make sure that all of our gardeners and volunteers are safe. Please be aware of your surroundings up there (and everywhere for that matter). If you can, try not to go up to the garden alone. If you must, make sure you have your cell phone handy and that you latch the gate behind you. If you see things happening please call 911 and report them. The police have added some patrols and hopefully with the new cameras we can catch the vandals so that it does not continue.

It is an unfortunate reality that vandalism is something we have to deal with. We are not alone in this. All of the other county programs in our SE Washington cluster have to deal with this. Your safety is our number one concern so please use precaution, pay attention and don’t hesitate to call 911 if you see things happening or feel unsafe.

Request for fir seedlings by Jeannine Polaski

Lisa DeWall has asked if anyone has fir seedlings on their property that they would be willing to provide to her. She has, on behalf of the Extension Office, been providing fir seedlings for the MRT program, Moral Reconation (reboot ego) Therapy. MRT is operated through Municipal Courts and is an 11 step correctional training program to increase moral reasoning. They must participate in the program rather than jail time, upon graduation they are given a tree to signify a new beginning.

If you have some fir seedlings on your property and are willing to provide them to Lisa (who is always a help to our program), please let her know. She is running out of seedlings and needs some help obtaining more. Lisa is willing to take care of the seedlings until they are needed by the program.

Catalyst harvest day & a big thank you to Shelton Kiwanis by: Bonnie Day

It was a beautiful morning at the garden with just enough breeze to keep us cool. Today was all about harvesting the lettuce, kale, chard and spinach and we took 27.5 pounds to the food bank. We also picked a basket of peas with a lot more to come.

Today was also a day that we had to clean up after our latest round of vandalism at the garden. Sunday someone kicked in the sliding glass door on the Master Gardener shed. Totally shattered. We cleaned up the glass and put up a temporary piece of plywood. Although the hole in the door was pretty big, it did not look like anyone got inside the shed. We reported it to the police again and on Monday motion activated video cameras were put up that view the greenhouse, both shed doors, the garden and the side flower beds. We also have timers on the lights above the shed doors. The next step is taking out the sliding glass doors and putting in a steel door that will be harder to kick in (we hope).

On the upside, today we had a picnic lunch for the members of the Shelton Kiwanis. This group has been a supporter of the food bank garden since its beginning and our annual lunch and garden tour is a way we can say Thank You. We had great food and good conversation and everyone got a tour of the garden and greenhouse. We are always at the garden on Tuesday at 9 a.m. and everyone is welcomed to join us.

Catalyst Community Garden Workshops are the second Saturday of each

month.

Can you identify this mystery plant by Pat Carpenter

We have another mystery plant. The gardener has it growing in her flower bed and has been trying to identify it for a couple of years. There is a good sample in the office fridge. It has very coarse leaves.

Plastic free July Mason County Conservation District

MCD is on a mission to reduce single-use plastic waste. Join us for a month of FREE interactive workshops to help you make your life more plastic-free!
