Heather Notes:

Here Be Dragons

The expression “Here be dragons” was used in ancient times to describe unknown territories. Dragons or sea monsters were drawn on maps to show uncharted areas where potential dangers were thought to exist. And, if someone dared to venture into these unknown places they were “marching off the map!” It would seem this past week we as a global community have “marched off the map” into the dragons and sea monsters. Ever since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a Global Pandemic all kinds of strange things have been happening.

The NBA has ended its season early, Princess Cruises pulled all their ships, Italy has closed all it borders and all flights from Europe into the United States have been banned.

More locally, as reported in the Owen Sound Hub, “The Ontario government announced all publicly funded schools would be closed for two weeks following next week’s March break and the Ontario Hockey League season was postponed, impacting the Owen Sound Attack. Bruce Power temporarily closed its visitor centre and was taking part in additional screening measures, Grey Roots announced the postponement of upcoming events, and courses were suspended at the Unifor Family Education Centre in Port Elgin. The situation was changing almost minute-by-minute Thursday afternoon.”

And here at Port Elgin United time was spent this week at the Council meeting drafting a COVID-19 Response with a few precautions for our time of worship and fellowship.

Yes, it would seem COVID-19 has taken us into new territory; it has taken us to “where the dragons are”. However, as people of faith we need not grow anxious, instead let cool heads prevail as we trust these soothing words, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

Ash Wednesday (February 26th) marks the beginning of the season of Lent

“Lent offers a beautiful opportunity to discover the mystery of Christ within us. It is a gentle but also demanding time. It is a time of solitude but also community, it is a time of listening to the voice within, but also a time of paying attention to other people’s needs. It is a time to continuously make the passage to new inner life as well as to life with those around us.”

~ Henri J.M. Nouwen

Your Lenten offerings from this season of Lent will help to support the following

• The United Church’s Emergency Response Fund to provide relief for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh through the Mission & Service partner, ACT Alliance. ACT Alliance is responding to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Bangladesh and is providing support to nearly 1 million Rohingya children, women and men who were forced to escape violence in Myanmar by fleeing to Bangladesh. Website: https://www.united-church.ca/social-action

• Huron Shores Hospice – This residential hospice, located in Tiverton, provides quality end-of-life care, at no cost, to residents of Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Huron-Kinloss and surrounding areas. A second bed will be open in the fall of 2020. Website: https://huronshoreshospice.ca/

In the Welcome Centre you will find some Lenten Boxes as well as an eco friendly option of a printed label which you can place in your own Mason Jar. Lenten boxes have become more expensive and more difficult to come by and so we encourage you to use the label and place

in a container of your own. There are also many Lenten Resources available to assist you with your daily Lenten devotions found on the desk in the Welcome Centre.
