THIRD YEAR PSYCHOLOGY MAJORS: PSYC 501 IMPORTANT INFORMATION

It's time to apply for PSYC 501! Please note the following deadlines:

Deadline for students to submit applications -- Monday, March 2nd, 2020 Deadline for students to submit rankings -- Monday, March 23rd, 2020 Matching decisions announced -- Late-April, 2020 Thesis eligibility confirmed-- Late-May, 2020

Minimum Criteria:

The completion of PSYC 302/3.0 (or PSYC 300/6.0) by April 2020 with a minimum grade of C+ [unless you participated in exchange during the 2019-20 academic year];

A minimum GPA of 2.60 between PSYC 202/3.0, PSYC 203/3.0, PSYC 301/3.0, and PSYC 302/3.0 (or PSYC 300/6.0);

A minimum PSYC GPA (not including Supporting Science or PSYC_Subs credits) of 3.30 (equivalent to a B+), following submission of winter term grades.

NOTE: Students must have a minimum PSYC GPA of 3.00 ("B" average) at the time of application. Students with a GPA below this threshold who apply will be advised of their ineligibility.

Please make use of the ASC "GPA Calculator" to see if it is likely that you will meet the GPA requirements by the end of the winter term.

Please note that all students who meet the minimum criteria may apply for PSYC 501/9.0. However, not all students who meet the minimum criteria will be accepted into the thesis option. Because PSYC 501/9.0 is an intensive course of study, involving a significant amount of commitment from both the student and their Faculty supervisor, we can only accept a limited number of students. Acceptance is based primarily on (1) academic performance in Psychology courses, and (2) match in research interests with a potential supervisor.

Summer 2020 NSERC-USRA Research Awards

USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Awards) are meant to nurture your interest and fully develop your potential for a research career in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage you to undertake graduate studies in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support through your host university. NSERC encourages qualified Indigenous students to apply for this award.

To be eligible to apply for an award, you must: be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of the deadline date for applications at the

university; be registered, as of the deadline date for applications at the university, in a bachelor's degree program at

an eligible university; minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

In addition... Students are not permitted to take courses during working hours throughout the term of their award

unless special arrangements to make-up the time have been made with the supervisor. In particular, they are not permitted to do thesis research during the term of the award.

You may hold only one university USRA per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31). You may hold a maximum of three university USRAs throughout your undergraduate university career.

To hold an award, you must:

have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study (or two academic terms) of your bachelor's degree;

have been registered in at least one of the two terms immediately before holding the award in a bachelor's degree program at an eligible university;

not have started a program of graduate studies in the natural sciences or engineering at any time; be engaged on a full-time basis in research and development activities in the natural sciences or

engineering during the tenure of the award.

Duration of awards

The duration of the award is 16 consecutive weeks on a full-time basis. You may hold an award at any time during the year as permitted by your academic program.

The deadline to secure Faculty approval is February 21, 2020.

Once the Awards Committee has selected the recipients, successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible (date TBA).

You will need to formally accept your offer and complete the necessary documentation required from NSERC.

SMITH SCHOOL OF BUSINESS – RECRUITING RA SUPPORT

My name is Leanne Kack and I am a master’s student in Organizational Behaviour at Smith School of Business. I am currently working under the supervision of Dr. Matthias Spitzmuller and Dr. Christopher Miners, and I am in need of help for a study I am conducting.

The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of a reflection activity, that incorporates mindfulness, on team dynamics and decision making. The study will ask participants to engage in a computer-based reflection activity, a collective bridge building task, and a post-task questionnaire. The study is estimated to take 1 hour to complete these tasks.

We are looking for students to assist with the research on a variety of tasks.

Qualifications:

- Second or third year psychology major

The study will be run within the following times:

- Monday: 11 – 1pm, 4 – 6pm

- Wednesday: 11 – 4pm

- Thursday: 11 – 4pm

- Friday: 11 – 4pm

2020 Undergraduate Student Summer Research Fellowship

The Undergraduate Student Summer Research Fellowships (USSRF) provides an experiential learning opportunity for continuing undergraduate students enrolled in a bachelor's degree program at Queen's to participate in social sciences, humanities and/or creative arts research under the supervision of a Queen's faculty member. The program is intended to provide students with meaningful opportunities to engage in discovery-based learning and to develop research and presentation skills.

A minimum of nineteen fellowships of $6,000 each are available on campus for the duration of four months (May-August 2020).

Two fellowships of $5,000 are available at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) at Herstmonceux Castle, England for the duration of three months (May-July 2020).

Queen’s National Model United Nations Conference 2020

The Queen's International Affairs Association (QIAA) is excited to say we will be hosting the Queen's Model United Nations Conference for the first time in years. This conference will give students of all skill levels a taste of the Model United Nations Experience in an engaging and lively environment.

This conference catered to Queen's students will be running from February 28th to March 1st right on campus. Comprising of 5 different committees from general assemblies and crisis, come engage in thrilling debate and indulge in the Model United Nations experience. From discussing the Five Eyes and water security to a real-life simulation of your favourite fables and Peter the Great, this is a great experience for students of all departments and interests.

NEUROXCHANGE CONFERENCE

Wednesday, April 29 NeuroXChange is a unique neuroscience, mental health, and music cognition conference held at McMaster University open to undergraduate students across Ontario. This conference is designed to bring together aspiring neuroscientists to network, learn, and present their research to fellow peers. The 9th Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in Psychology

This national, peer-reviewed conference will take place on May 7th and 8th, 2020. YORK CVR-VISTA VISION SCIENCE Summer School

The York University CVR-VISTA Vision Science Summer School Dates: June 8 - 12, 2020 The Centre for Vision Research (CVR) at York University in Toronto offers a one-week, most-expenses-paid* undergraduate summer school on vision science. The program includes talks by CVR faculty on current research topics in vision science, as well as hands-on experience in CVR laboratories. The curriculum reflects the wide range of research areas at CVR, which includes research on human visual perception, computer vision, machine learning, visual neuroscience, 3D film, immersive environments, and disorders of vision. The program is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in attending graduate school and / or pursuing a career in scientific research in a vision-related field. DrugSmart: A pharmacy located in the Queen's Centre.

Environmental Health and Safety

Food Centre, AMS: A non-profit, confidential, and non-judgmental food service for members of the Queen’s

community.

Peer Support Centre: The Peer Support Centre is a service on campus that provides one-on-one peer support to all undergraduate

students. It thrives on being confidential and non-judgemental. Every student is always welcome to drop-in

for a chat or resource referral. Students are free to talk about anything they choose. No problem is too big or

too small! We are open 10am - 10pm, 7 days a week starting in September.

Disability Services Student Wellness Services assists students in the following ways:

Recommends exam accommodations

Facilitates access to material in alternate formats

Provides assistive technologies

Coordinates learning strategies and library research workshops

Coordinates volunteer note-taking and peer mentor programs

NOTE: Students with disabilities who wish to make use of the services available must register at Disability

Services every academic year and must forward supporting documentation to the Student Wellness Services

Office.

Other disability services offered at Queen's include... Learning Strategies Development: This program enhances students' ability to learn effectively and

helps students develop greater confidence in their abilities.

Learning Disabilities Specialists: Offered through the Regional Assessment and Resource Centre,

these specialists provide assessment and services for students with possible learning disabilities and

other neuropsychological conditions.

InvisAbilities: A student organization promoting awareness, education, and support of young adults

living with hidden chronic illness. Started at Queen's in 2009, the group has spread to include chapters

at McGill University, University of Ottawa, Brock University, and University of Calgary.

Academic Support The transition to university life is a big one – and part of it is adjusting to the challenges and workload that

are part of being a Queen’s student. At Queen’s you are never alone. We have many offices dedicated to

helping you learn, think, and do.

The Learning Commons The Queen's Learning Commons (QLC) is both a hub of services supporting formal academic programs and a

meeting place within Stauffer Library. It encompasses physical and online environments, accommodating

different approaches to learning.

The QLC provides resources, workshops and seminars, and one-on-one professional consultations for

students who want to enhance or develop their skills.

As the central provider of career education and employment support services at Queen's University for

undergraduate, graduate students and recent alumni from all disciplines. They offer a comprehensive range

of accessible services to support and empower students in making informed decisions about their career,
