THE official ambassador for the 2011AFL International Cup, Brett Kirk,said he took on the role after learningthe Israeli-Palestinian Peres PeaceTeam will return to Australia.
Speaking to The AJN at the launchof the tournament last week, theretired Sydney Swans player said:“When I was first thinking about therole, I watched the documentaryabout the Peace Team and I wasinspired by the way footy connectedpeople and was used as a vehicle tobring people together.”
Kirk will travel to more than adozen countries around the world,including Israel, America, China,India and South Africa, as he givesback to the game that he loves.
“No matter how much money youhave or what religion you were raised,footy brings people together, and Iknew I was doing the right thing afterthat documentary.
“I can’t wait to travel to Israel andmeet the guys in the team.”
Executive director of the PeresCentre for Peace in Australia TanyaOziel has been the driving forcebehind the Peres Peace Team.
“After much consideration, wehave realised there is enough commitment in the community andalthough the cost will be huge, werealise there is an important messageto be spread and this is a sustainableprogram,” Oziel said.
She added that the players fromthe inaugural team in 2008 broughtpride to themselves, their families andtheir cultures.
“We are again looking for 13Israelis and 13 Palestinians to join theteam. The most beautiful part is thatthe boys, who were strangers fromtwo different sides of the conflict, stillkeep in touch and are friends now.”
AFL national and internationaldevelopment manager, DavidMatthews, announced last week thatgames will be held in Sydney for thefirst time.
“Sydney is the most interna-tional city in Australia and if we aregoing to have 1000 internationalvisitors, they want to come toSydney,” he said.
The first week of games will beheld in the Harbour City, including agame at ANZ Stadium before a Swansmatch. The second week will be heldin Melbourne.
He said that inviting the PeresPeace Team to return was an easydecision.
“The Peace Team is something wesimply couldn’t refuse because it’s acultural exchange, not just sport.People would be surprised to see it’snot just expat Australians. This gameallows us to connect communitiesaround the world.”
The 2011 AFL International Cup will be heldfrom August 12-27, 2011.

FORMER AJN editor Dan Goldberg haswon an Australian Human RightsCommission Television Award for hisdocumentary, Football United: Passportto Hope.
The film records the journey of agroup of Australian refugee children,who came together to play soccer, trav-elling to South Africa for FIFA WorldCup’s Festival of Hope tournament.
“This is for the kids. They are the realheroes,” Goldberg said.
“This documentary combined thetwo things I’m passionate about: sportand human rights. And this story wasabout one specific human right: theright to be a child, because throughwars and other problems, that wastaken from these kids.”
Goldberg said he was surprised towin the award. “I was shocked becausewe were up against stiff competition fromSBS, whose documentary was aboutAustralia’s first terror trial, and the ABC.”
