Power-Efficient Brain-Based Application Specific Integrated Circuit Design for Embedded Space Systems

The Aerospace Corporation saw an opportunity for the application of neuromorphic algorithms in embedded space systems. This team was assigned to conducted a feasibility analysis, provide a recommendation on hardware/software combinations for outfitting an Aerocube satellite, find possible applications of the technology, and map out project milestones. The ultimate goal was to receive funding from The Aerospace Corporation management to begin development on this project within the organization.

Welcome to the USC Viterbi School’s 12th Annual KIUEL Senior Design Expo!

This program showcases the design projects that are completed in the senior capstone engineering courses. The projects are often presented within the class, but rarely to other students, staff, faculty and industry partners. The Senior Design Expo is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Viterbi’s graduating seniors.

SWAP: Surface-Water-Air Propulsion

All air-to-water drones must compromise between air and water performance to operate in both mediums. In this project, a 120g 3:1 gearbox and gear-shifting mechanism was designed, built, and tested to alternate the propeller’s torque based on the medium and reduce the power consumption in water. Testing with a 920Kv motor and a 12x3.8 propeller, the gearbox reduces the power consumption of the propulsion system in water, making it more effective than a direct-drive system when over 50% of the mission is spent underwater.

Exploring Tensegrity Lattice Dynamic Response for Payload Protection

An investigation into the unique and advantageous mechanical response of tensegrity (tension + integrity) based lattice structures with the potential end-use application of functioning as a planetary lander, capable of protecting an onboard scientific instrument payload. Modeled, designed and constructed a variety of base tensegrity unit cells as well as subsequent lattice configurations to test resulting accelerations experienced by a payload following a variety of drop-tests.

Allay

Allay is a Bluetooth-enabled wearable that detects stress and provides a personalized, interactive digital framework for users to alleviate their stress in real time. Our device integrates heart rate, EMG, and galvanic skin response (GSR) sensors in a single compartment to continuously sense physiological signals and identify which have exceeded baseline values. With a weighted algorithm that also takes into account user feedback on their subjective experience of stress, Allay is able to provide a holistic stress index that is used to guide the user through proper relaxation techniques on their mobile device.

Front-End Engineering Design for a Polypropylene

Plant Design

In this project, we look to create a front-end engineering and

design study of a grass-roots polypropylene plant in India that

produces 350K MT of on-spec polypropylene per year. Our

goal is to optimize the plant's production to make it as

economically and environmentally viable as possible over a 20

-year period.

Electrooculography Headset for the Diagnosis of Visual Neglect

Physicians who treat stroke patients currently have no objective means to diagnose visual neglect, a condition that prevents affected individuals from attending to stimuli in regions of their visual fields. Our team designed and developed a low-cost headset for the diagnosis of visual neglect. The headset displays images at specific locations and tracks resulting eye movements using electrooculography (EOG) sensors.

Independently Operable Respiratory Therapy Station for Tetraplegics

Respiratory therapy is a critical aspect of tetraplegic care, as poor airway clearance can lead to the development of respiratory infections and phlegm plugs. To provide greater autonomy to tetraplegics, a station that may be utilized to self-administer respiratory therapy without the help of another individual using an alternative motorized wheelchair control unit and bluetooth was developed. The station combines spirometry, mucus loosening via a positive expiratory pressure device, and autogenic drainage to achieve mucus clearance.

The Brain Bus: Wrist Goniometer to Analyze Preferential Neuronal Activation from Subcortical Multielectrode Recordings

Our team developed a novel goniometer device to analyze wrist angle measurements from a prompted user interface that is coupled with multielectrode recordings in the subcortical region in patients with dystonia. This device was designed and is currently being utilized to help characterize neuronal activity and the preferential activation of neurons in specific brain regions for specific movement modalities. By prompting the patients with our user interface to move their wrist in specific ways (ballistic movements vs continuous movements), we will be able to better characterize the brain activity for those specific movement modes as well as how the activity is altered in children with dystonia.
