Welcome to the 25th Annual London Artists’ Studio Tour!Over our 25 years of opening London studios to the public, hundreds of local artists have presented a wide variety of work in all media. This year, 39 artists will display drawing, graphic design, painting, sculpture, pottery, embroidery, printmaking and textiles.

Approaches range from traditional to experimental. Media encompass oil, watercolour, acrylic, found object assemblage, metal, wood, wool, paper, clay, encaustic, silk and more. Some artists are veterans of the Tour. Some are new to the Tour and to London.

The London Artists’ Studio Tour is a juried event. Participants are professional working artists with exhibition experience who are living and working in the city of London. This means that you will see the best of the best.

The Tour is as much about the process of creating art as it is about the art works themselves. Browsers are welcome. Artists are present in their studios for the duration of the Tour and are happy to explain their creative approach and answer any questions.

We strive to keep it fresh and exciting. Ten of this year’s artists are new to the Tour. We also embrace the element of surprise: watch for pop-up demonstrations and special guest artists.

This is a self-guided tour and is free of charge. Friday, April 20th is the opening night. Come early for refreshments and fi rst choice of work. You will leave inspired and eager to explore other studios.

The 2018 Organizing Committee: Kevin Bice, Corrine Garlick, Doug Magrath, Beth Stewart, Richard Sturgeon, and Chris Snedden (on leave).

3. Jen Hamilton

19 Rockingham Ct, N6C 4L7 519-709-7103 [email protected] . www.jenhamilton.ca

Jen Hamilton is a printmaker, painter and house maker. Her current project, titled Domestic Postpartum, is a series of over 2,000 small houses and domestic structures that range in size from 1.5 inches to 12 inches tall and wide. They are constructed using materials from Jen’s archive from several years of art making which includes drawings, paintings, etchings, screen prints and writings.

Jen’s work explores, critiques and visualizes themes of “home making” and “domesticated duties.” Showing sacrifice as a tool in art making as well in life, these small sculptures, paintings and linocut prints are a response to the struggle of entering motherhood while trying to maintain an art practice. Her work has been shown across Canada as well as internationally.

4. Frank Pereira (PACO)

135 Sackville St, (rear) N5Z 2E5 519-435-1063 [email protected]

With a background of displaying art work at various international locations in Spain, Brazil, USA, the artist known as PACO is now permanently located in London, Ontario. After successful participation in the 2017 Tour, PACO is back again this year.

In addition to the many sculptures in granite, marble and wood exhibited last year, PACO has expanded his collection to include a large - approximately 350 piece - selection of cutting boards and serving trays. All are uniquely designed. All are manufactured from recycled wood products in a variety of wood types. All are priced and on display at his Sackville studio. Once again, the artist will be on site and available to discuss the features that may be of interest to visitors of all ages.

2. Beth Stewart

15 Antrim Cres, N6E 1G9 519-668-6743 [email protected] . www.bethstewart.ca

Beth Stewart works in coloured pencil or graphite. She is best known for her birds but also draws other small critters as well as objects she collects.

Beth is a backyard birder. She is fascinated by their antics, tenacity and beauty. She captures them in coloured pencil, which she enjoys for its controllability and versatility. Beth’s birds observe, rather than be observed. They gaze back, challenging the viewer’s autonomy with the awareness that they too are being watched.

In addition to her avian models, Beth draws, typically in graphite, from her collection of natural and man-made objects. She enjoys discovering new and extreme examples of natural and manufactured items, experimenting with arranging and classifying things, and making visual connections among seemingly unlike items.

1. Jeanette Marshall - West Wind Studio

212 Pochard Lane, N5W 5Z3 226-663-5906 [email protected] . www.jeanettemarshall.com

Jeanette was trained as a classical painter at the University of Manitoba. With a BFA Honours Degree, she pursued her career in Montreal, Vancouver, Windsor and, since 2012, London. Her figurative works are personal interpretations of the world around her, embodying the deeper meaning she perceives, capturing aesthetic harmonies and preserving valued experiences.

Of the many challenges that an artist faces, the greatest are fostering an identity and forging a sense of purpose. Toward this end, over the past year, Jeanette studied her ancestry. An enduring value, she realized, was a love of horticulture. The floral beauty that her ancestors cultivated, which she creates in her own garden or discovers along hiking trails is reflected on canvas and paper.

5. Jerry Vrabec

20 Swinyard St, N5W 4B6 519-438-2569 www.customartmetalwork.com

Born, raised and educated in Prague, Jerry Vrabec came to Canada in 1984. A true renaissance man, Jerry is part teacher, inventor, designer, technician and all artist. He has had experience creating large public works for a varied clientele: religious, commercial, corporate, public and government. All work is completed within budget and on time and fits nicely with the ambiance of nearby buildings as well as incorporating the client’s vision. An excellent example of Jerry’s work can be seen in the centre of London’s first roundabout traffic circle. The Charlie Fox Memorial Overpass sculpture is a masterful metal piece that soars 36 feet in the air. This sculpture is Jerry’s personal tribute to freedom fighters worldwide.

6. Allyson Proulx (Lefty Smudges) - The Shoebox

999 Lorne Ave Upper, N5W 3L5 226-919-4080 [email protected] . leftysmudges.com

“Wanna play paper?”

“What a lot we lost when we stopped writing letters.”

Beginning her career in art, with a background in theatre and literature, Allyson is slowly constructing a considerate practice, endearingly named, Lefty Smudges. Playing with paper, collage, print, and ink, playing at running her own post office, Allyson uses Lefty Smudges as a tool to generate community engagement, and to keep the conversation, experience, and depth of human relationship found in written communication, happening. Visit Allyson at her studio to see new work by the artist, and if you so choose, to write (and mail) your own postcard. Postage included.

7. Melody Green - London Clay Art Centre

664 Dundas St, N5W 2Y8 519-719-1911 [email protected]

Melody Green was raised on a small London area farm. There she developed a passion for all things nature and its interaction with human invention. After studying archaeology and anthropology at University and watching her family grow independent, she became a member of the London Potters Guild. Clay is her medium. She is fascinated by wood and electric firings, and the visual-tactile experience. Melody’s sculptural and functional works reach out, begging you to touch them.

8. Laila Brandt - London Clay Art Centre

664 Dundas St, N5W 2Y8 519-670-9006 lailart@ live.ca . www.lailart.ca

Laila Brandt was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and is an artist who loves to hand build unique stoneware pottery that you want to touch, hold and enjoy every day. Each work is an individual ceramic inspiration, a piece of art, a curiosity that reflects the very nature influenced notion of the perfect-imperfect. Several of her exquisitely crafted items have holes with woven fibers that add a whimsical sense of experimentation. Laila’s obsession is to balance positive and negative spaces and to explore different shapes, textures and imperfections. Her pieces can be found at various shops, online and have also been featured in a new local cookbook. Visit Laila in her studio on the 2nd floor of the London Clay Art Centre for handbuilding demonstrations and an inside peek at the adventures of an artist.

9. Christos Angelopoulos - Ethos Studio Boutique

538 Adelaide St N, N6B 3J4 (enter at 630 1/2 Lorne Ave.) 226-213-6624 [email protected]

Christos produces an array of wonderful contemporary artworks in oils, acrylics and inks. The collection consists of personal reflections of modern city landscapes, glimpses of a moments in time and elements of nature. Christos’ artwork offers unique perspectives and reveals the process of drawing and painting as a transformation and an ode to the relationship between subject, artist and viewer.

Ethos Studio Boutique is a must see, with dynamic white walls and tall ceilings in an urban industrial setting. More importantly, it offers viewers a glimpse into the creative processes of Christos and fellow Tour artist Kirra Konstantinovna with a large selection of original finished and works-in-progress on display. To top it off, Christos will demonstrate his processes and provide one-on-one interaction whenever possible throughout the weekend.

10. Kirra Konstantinovna - Ethos Studio Boutique

538 Adelaide St N, N6B 3J4 (enter at 630 1/2 Lorne Ave.) 226-213-6624 [email protected]

Kirra Konstantinovna moved to London three years ago from the rural Ottawa Valley where she developed her deep love of the natural world. Her childlike awe of flora and fauna followed her across Canada and abroad and is the primary inspiration for her art. Whether the subject is wildlife or protagonist female characters, Kirra’s work has a magical, almost spiritual essence to it: part allegorical, part iconographic. Kirra has worked primarily with acrylic ink washes on paper, incorporating figurative images imposed onto abstract dreamlike backgrounds with a combination of brush and pencil work. Rich, earthy colours pay homage to the natural world and play with themes of light and dark, motion and stillness, the real and surreal. This year Kirra began experimenting in painting with oils on wood panels while staying true to the themes of her other work. Kirra works in a shared studio with her partner Christos Angelopoulos.

11. Claire Cepukas - The Factory Creative Businesses

630 1/2 Lorne Ave, N6B 3J4 250-777-3744 [email protected] . clairecepukas.com

Claire Cepukas, born and raised in London, is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program. She draws inspiration for her colourful landscapes from her many years living and working remotely as a silviculturist in Western Canada. Although Claire is primarily a large scale painter, she has found herself experimenting with alcohol markers, patterned paper and other mixed-media to create smaller on-the-go nature studies that accommodate her nomadic working lifestyle. Her love and enthusiasm for the outdoors are mirrored in her work with the use of exaggerated colour, dynamic lines and bold shapes. Claire welcomes you to come explore her shared studio space, where her creative ideas and natural influences translate themselves onto paper and canvas.

12. Amy Klinkhamer - The Factory Creative Businesses

630 1/2 Lorne Ave, N6B 3J4 519-777-9269 [email protected]

Amy Klinkhamer’s love for painting and ceramics began early on when she attended both H.B Beal and Fanshawe College to pursue her interest in the arts. Her admiration continued on and is best reflected in her divided studio space, split equally by her two mediums of large scale fluid acrylics and functional ceramic pieces. Her visually striking, topographical-like paintings are bright and mesmerizing, while her use of black clay gives her pottery pieces an organic feel. Her love for the unpredictable keeps her constantly finding new methods to include in her ongoing body of work.

16. Peter Karas

511 St, James St, N5Y 3P4 519-672-5220 [email protected] . www.dickandjaneart.ca

New Location in Old North! Peter Karas paints street scenes and landscapes in a bold, refreshing style. His focus is brilliant harmonious colour, and strong graphic compositions. His inspiration comes from many sources - from old neighborhoods and heritage houses, to children’s books and animated films. Working primarily in oil and watercolour, he paints mostly on canvas, but he has an interest in woodworking, carving and joinery as well. Many of his paintings incorporate low relief carving or hand built gilded wood frames that he makes onsite in his woodshop. Peter’s paintings are brimming with colour, and will enliven your home!

14. Elly Pakalnis

24 Alfred St, N5Y 2P4 226-700-1792 [email protected]

Spring is in the air, and it is a great time to prepare for the celebrations of the year ahead. Birthdays, weddings, and many other special occasions are times when a handcrafted item is appreciated. Of course, there is nothing wrong with giving a gift to yourself as well!

This year Elly’s lively decorated functional pottery with its images of birds and poppies will be accompanied by bursts of turquoise pots. The array of pieces includes bowls, plates, tumblers, mugs, serving dishes, oil and vinegar bottles, pitchers, vases, teapots and plant containers. Nothing quite compares to using pottery on a daily basis; it is fun, practical and dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. What makes a handcrafted item extra special is knowing who made it!

13. Richard Sturgeon

630 1/2 Lorne Ave, N6B 3J4 519-318-8078 IG: @richard.sturgeon . FB: Richard Sturgeon - Metal In Fusion . [email protected]

Flowing lines, motion and balance define form and space in the sculpture of Richard Sturgeon, exploring symbiotic connections, meditations and existential reflections. Miniatures to large-scale installations in stainless steel and steel are accented with found objects, copper, stone, bronze, bones and wood and can be found in private and public collections internationally.

“The essence of my work lies in breaking form into its most basic and necessary lines, revealing the purist of attitudes and emotions of a sculpture.”

“I take much of my inspiration from nature. But more than the obvious (the land, the sky and the water), I’m interested in representing natural movement, cycles, rhythms and patterns in three dimensions.”

19. Shirley Clement

2 Carrothers Ave, N6H 1J5 519-672-4694 [email protected] . www.onlyconnect.ca

Shirley makes vibrantly coloured textured pillows that have become treasured accents in the homes and cottages of many Londoners. She weaves the covers on a 45 inch Dutch countermarch floor loom in her home studio beside the river in historic Blackfriars. Shirley works from an attic full of wool, silk, llama, alpaca and camel that come from all over the world - some hand spun and hand dyed - and she has many new colours from which to choose. Her pillows come in two sizes - 18 by 25 inches and 18 by 18 inches. Covers are sewn with zippers for easy hand washing. Each pillow takes about 10 hours to craft. Shirley’s pillows make wonderful wedding presents for those couples who have everything! Gift certificates are also available.

17. Doug Magrath

519-432-0557 875 Waterloo St, N6A 3W7

Over the past twenty years as a full-time woodturner, Doug has focused on two areas. He creates functional art items such as serving bowls, platters, pepper and salt mills, wine stoppers, turned boxes. These practical items are designed and finished to be comfortably left out to display the form, natural colour and wood grain. They are available locally at Jill’s Table. He also creates decorative art pieces, primarily vases, hollow forms, natural edge bowl forms and sculptural pieces that are designed to capture the unique colours and figure in wood burls or exotic woods. Their only function is to occupy space beautifully. These are regularly available locally at Jonathon Gallery. Commissioned work is also welcomed.

18. Bijan Ghalehpardaz - Bijan’s Art Studio

673 Richmond St, N6A 5P6 519-870-1008 [email protected] . www.saatchiart.com/bijangh

Bijan’s work is the continuation and perfection of his unique technique of carving acrylic paint. This technique is a long process and each piece may take up to six months to complete. The process starts with creating paint layers. Often over 70 high-quality acrylic paint layers are applied over the wooden surface. Each layer must be dried before applying the next in order to reach the optimum result of crisper, cleaner cuts. Through experimentation with many different tools, Bijan has discovered that the Dremel power tool is the best device to use for cutting through such extremely tough surfaces. Bijan often works en plein air. He prepares for this for hours, using a portable generator and necessary gear such as earplugs and goggles. His resulting paintings, the unique interplay of chance and control, are beautiful. In addition, Bijan will exhibit palette knife landscapes, both local and from abroad.

20. Kevin Bice

2 Leslie St, N6H 1H9 519-438-4217 [email protected] . www.kevinbice.com

Kevin works at home in his studio and outdoors in locations across Canada, as well as in Italy, France, England and Scotland. He admires the Canadian tradition of landscape painting seen in artists such as Maurice Cullen, David Milne and J.E.H. MacDonald. He is most influenced by his father Clare Bice, a painter, writer and illustrator and, for over 30 years, the director of Museum London. This year, landscapes from Northern Italy and Northern Ontario dominate Kevin’s studio. As well, a number of larger works focus on Blackfriars Bridge. Whatever the subject or medium, the common denominator is his love of light. Kevin is a founder of the London Artists’ Studio Tour. To celebrate 25 years of the Tour, as well as current works, Kevin will be showing a retrospective of his oils, ink drawings, charcoals, pastels and watercolours.

21. Brian Dirks

24 Bathurst St, N6B 1N7 519-630-6259 [email protected] . www.bdirks.com

Brian uses studio work to magnify his time with subjects and expand on recurring themes. Light. Multiplicity of forms. Flow. Edges. Patterns. Impermanence. Atmospheres of calm, turbulence and chaotic bursts. In the stillness of open fields plants bend to wave gently until another storm. Rivers and streams rise and fall etching banks seamlessly threaded to beginnings and ends. In a sky clouds race. Lilies settle upon lakes rooted to willows.

Brian respects places he has been, things he has seen, time spent and unexpected associations. These are the origin and necessity for new thoughts and strengthened links. Paintings. Mixed media. Landscapes. Portraiture. Oil. Acrylic. Ink. Linen. Paper. Durable materials. Attention to detail. About seeing and being seen. Staying in touch. Attractive to restless minds.

23. Kim Kaitell - Oaza Studio

34 Elmwood Ave E, N6C 1J3 519-868-1814 [email protected] . www.facebook.com/kimkaitell.artist

Kim Kaitell grew up in Northwestern Ontario, deeply influenced by the forests and lakes of the Canadian Shield and has been interested in art since she had to be dragged away from the easel in kindergarten. Kim began her formal studies at The Alberta College of Art and Mount Royal College in Calgary; she continued at the private school Atelier Bleu-Vert in France where she was surrounded by rich European culture and history. Several years ago, feeling restless with the painting techniques she had employed from her studies, she began her experiments with plaster and paint. Her current work is a continued experiment with her recent, chosen medium and other elements of mixed media such as linen and burlap, and collage.

You can view Kim’s works at Gallery 609 and The Oaza Studio Gallery upstairs at London Farmer and Artisan Market.

24. Marijo Swick

2 Lundy Lane, N6C 3G5 226-235-4561 [email protected] . www.marijoswick.com

For the past few years, the steampunk aesthetic has crept in and out of the periphery of Marijo Swick’s work and marched across into her practice. Using the alter ego, Professor Millie Moon, an explorer and scientific purveyor of oddities and interesting “artifacts,” she trades on this fiction of the future that never was. Using her previous work which dealt with genetics and ethics as a jumping off point, Swick translates some of the more tantalizing ideas to the mechanical processes and beautifully gritty philosophy of steampunk. Whether creating crazy playful contraptions or engaging the viewer in thought provoking conversation, Swick works with text, both traditional and digital drawing and a plethora of mixed media. Expect to find something unusual at her studio.

25. Maria-Teresa Vicencio

76 Britannia Ave, N6H 2J2 519-858-2159 [email protected] . mariateresavicencio.com

Two different types of work - sculpture and graphic art - will be shown in Maria-Teresa’s studio. The sculptures - clay, metal and wood - are inspired by personal observations and memories. The resulting exploration of forms and textures runs together with the search for the appropriate materials to represent these memories. In the graphic work, the techniques of monoprinting and monotype on paper, combined with colour, are used to complement and represent the continuous transformation and creation of abstract forms. Nature is the starting point for most of the ideas. These works are painted and printed on acid - free paper.

Maria-Teresa’ s works have been exhibited in London, England, Tokyo and Kurashiki Japan, Ottawa, Vancouver and London Ontario. Her prints have been used in several book covers published in Canada. She is a member of the London Potters Guild.
