An eight-length winner of the Sunland Park Oaks last time Mar. 25, the sophomore filly was one of the favorites for the May 4 GI Kentucky Oaks. “She came back with a soft-tissue problem and was going to need six or seven months off,” explained trainer Bob Baffert on HRTV Thursday. “So we decided, in her best interest, to retire her and send her back to Kentucky [to be bred]. It’s such a shame because she was such a brilliant filly and we were really looking forward to a big Kentucky Oaks run. All her races were so effortless. It’s a big blow to the Baffert barn--they’re so hard to come by when you get a freaky filly like that.” Baffert and John Fort’s operation teamed up to complete last term’s Sunland Oaks/Kentucky Oaks double with Plum Pretty (Medaglia d’Oro) and they still have fellow J “TDN Rising Star” J and recent GII Fantasy S. heroine Mamma Kimbo (Discreet Cat) penciled in for the first Friday in May. Despite amassing a perfect record over sprint distances in 2011, Secret Circle has raced exclusively at two turns this year, finishing second in the GIII Sham S. over a mile Jan. 7, then made the first of his three trips to Arkansas a successful one, taking the faster of the two divisions of the GIII Southwest S. Feb. 20. Though many questioned his ability to stretch out even further, the attractive bay colt held on to land the 1 1/16-mile GII Rebel S. by a half-length Mar. 17 and was closest to stablemate Bodemeister (Empire Maker) in last Saturday’s GI Arkansas Derby going nine panels, crossing the line 9 1/2 lengths behind the possible Derby favorite. Secret Circle has amassed a career record of 7-5-2-0 and earnings of $1,018,990. SHAMARDAL COLT SHINES AT CRAVEN After Wednesday’s quiet opener, last night’s concluding session of the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale seemed like a different event with an evening headed by a 500,000gns (US$842,912) Shamardal colt. The dearest breeze-up horse sold in Britain for four years, he rocketed in price as John Ferguson, accompanied in the sales pavilion by Sheikh Mohammed, eventually outbid Peter Kelly of Emerald Bloodstock, who was taking orders from County Tipperary trainer David Marnane. The colt was consigned by Tally-Ho Stud in County Westmeath. "He was a very athletic individual, he breezed exceptionally well and is by a sire we know and trust,” said Ferguson. “Hopefully, he’ll be a top 2-year-old.” For Roger O’Callaghan, who now helps his parents Tony and Anne with the day-to-day running of Tally-Ho, it was a memorable result. O’Callaghan had bought the colt for 53,000gns as a foal, and bought him back for 45,000gns as a yearling. "He was easily the biggest sale we have had,” O’Callaghan said. “We loved him from the day we bought him as a foal, and we were hoping for 100,000gns-150,000gns, but this far exceeded our expectations.” Cont. p4 Princess Arabella Coady Secret Circle Coady Lot 138 - Shamardal colt www.tattersalls.com

SOUNDING A WARNING Yesterday’s renewal of the G3 Craven S. at Newmarketwas robbed of a potential star turn when Most Improved(Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) was ruled out due to lameness, but, after the emphatic success of John Manley's Trumpet Major(Ire) (Arakan), it ended up doing its job by showcasing aserious G1 2000 Guineas contender.

“It’s a shame and it’s one of those things--it’s a partof racing,” Baffert said of the loss of Princess Arabella, who broke her maiden first out at Santa Anita Dec. 31by 3 1/2 lengths followed by an allowance tally by thesame margin Feb. 12. “The talent was just amazing.Every time I led her out I didn’t have to worry if shewas going to get beat or not. There are very few thatgive you that feeling.” Peachtree principal John Fort said that PrincessArabella is currently in Kentucky at Taylor Made Farm, and said that he hoped to send her to Tapit this year.Bred in Kentucky by Greenwich Cattle Company, the

$47,000 KEESEP RNA is outof a full-sister to Peachtree’s GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Invisible Ink (ThunderGulch). “I hope I don’tsound like an ownerbragging about his horses, but she was just a littlemore than another goodracehorse,” Fort said in aninterview on TVG. “She wasso explosively brilliant. I’venever seen a horse quite likethat and I’ve been involvedin racing for 35 years.” Fortwas quick to compare hisstar-crossed runner with oneof racing’s greats. “I’m from

South Carolina and, of course, Frank Whiteley trainedthere at Camden and I remember him saying that everytime they took Ruffian to the track they just sort ofheld their breath. And, this filly, because she put somuch into it and she was so fast, you just were soafraid that something might happen. This filly gaveeveryone who watched her train the same feeling.“ Hecontinued, “What a big, gifted filly--16.2 [hands] with astride from here to Texas. It’s that kind, unfortunatelyin this business that can get hurt. What an honor tohave owned her, what an honor that she wasundefeated and untested. I hope the Thoroughbredworld will recognize her and always think about her inthat pantheon of champions. There are so many waysto achieve greatness. You can have a long career, youcan win a few marquee races or you can have threeraces that were just absolutely brilliant and that wasPrincess Arabella.” Princess Arabella retires withearnings of $188,400 from three winning starts.

Take Charge Indy Works at Gulfstream... Chuck and Maribeth Sandford’s GI Florida Derby heroTake Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) breezed five furlongs in aneasy 1:01.47 at Palm Meadows Thursday morning ashe preps for the GI Kentucky Derby May 5. Underexercise rider Eric Rodriguez, the dark bay got hisopening quarter in :24.06 and half in :48.26. The drillcame in company with Transplendent (Sky Mesa), amaiden member of the John Kimmel barn. “The horse isready, the horse is fit,” said Pat Byrne, Take ChargeIndy’s conditioner. “Eric said he was like a Cadillac. He’ll have one more work here next week, but he won’thave any company. I’m going to do something nextweek just to do something.” Byrne said that his Derbyhope will ship from Florida to Churchill Downs May 1.

"I have to thank Michael Hussey, who has done a lotof work with the horse and rode him in his breeze--he isa gift,” O’Callaghan added. “The mare is owned byMark and Pippa Hackett, and is being covered by ourstallion Bushranger (Ire) tonight!" The buoyant second session helped the sale finishwith an 8,578,000gns turnover, up 7%, and the73,316gns average rose by 3%, while the 57,000gnsmedian was down by 5%. A daughter of Shamardal took second place on thepecking order when realizing 360,000gns after RichardFrisby came out best in a duel with fellow Newmarketagent Mags O’Toole for the filly consigned from WillieBrowne’s Mocklershill operation. The half-sister tostakes performer Courageous (Ire) (Refuse to Bend{Ire}) was bred in Ireland by the McCalmont family’sYeomanstown Lodge Stud, and had not previouslypassed through a sale. "I can’t say who she is for, but she’ll either go into

training in Newmarket or inFrance," said Frisby. "I thoughtshe was the pick of the fillieshere, and she breezedexceptionally well. It’s a verygood female family and one Iknow quite well, as I manage ahalf-sister to her relative FairyQueen (Ire). The family continuescropping up year after year." Abu Dhabi royal family

member Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, biddingthrough Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock, paid280,000gns for a Street Boss half-brother to ChurchillDowns stakes winner Record (Devil His Due) sold fromJohn Collins’ Brown Island Stables. The colt had costjust $22,000 as a yearling at Keeneland.

"This colt’s breeze was awesome," said Brown, whooutbid agent Tom Malone. "He and the Oasis Dream webought [for 160,000gns on Wednesday] were the twowe really made a play for, and I’m delighted to have gotboth. This fellow made a bit more than we expected topay. The horses were a lot better tonight, so I thoughtit would be stronger, but it has been like a differentsale." Newmarket trainer Marco Botti outbid agent DavidRedvers early on to get a Cape Cross (Ire) colt out ofThiella (Kingmambo), a daughter of GI Del Mar Oaksrunner-up Theoretically (Theatrical {Ire}). Offered fromCharlie and Tracy Vigors’ Hillwood Stud, the coltrocketed in price from the £40,000 he had cost atDoncaster as a yearling when knocked down to Bottifor 200,000gns. "I have an owner for him, but he doesn’t want me tosay who it is at the moment," said Botti. "The horsebreezed really well and he’s physically a very goodmodel, especially for a first foal. He can probably raceover seven furlongs, and he’s by a stallion that hasthrown a lot of good horses. I like the cross with aKingmambo mare." Charlie Gordon-Watson, standing with Ed Dunlop, was taken by a War Front colt offered from PaddyTwomey’s Hawthorn Villa Stud offered near the closeof play. Twomey had paid $105,000 for the colt atKeeneland in September, and he resold for 175,000gnslast night. At the sale’s end, Tattersalls chairman EdmondMahony commented: "There has been plenty ofcompetition at the top of the market this week, anumber of spectacular pinhooking successes, and theindividual highlight of the 500,000gns sale topperwhich was the third highest price ever at the CravenBreeze-Up. "Buyers from throughout the world, most notably theGulf region and Hong Kong, have had a major impacton the sale, and we are naturally delighted that the keyindicators of turnover, average, median and clearancerate have held up so well. "The figures should also be placed in the context ofconditions for the breeze which were far from ideal. The 2-year-olds coped admirably in wind and drivingrain and, as ever, paid tribute to the professionalism ofthe consignors who brought some outstandingindividuals to the marketplace. "Nevertheless, it would be wrong to pretend that allhas been plain sailing over the last two days. Themarket has been selective at times and served as areminder that the continuing economic uncertainty, particularly in Europe, continues to pose challenges. "The positives that can be taken from this sale shouldhowever give cause for cautious optimism as we lookforward to the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up andHorses in Training Sale which takes place May 3-4." Dayatthespa debuted a four-length winner sprintingover the Saratoga lawn last August before checking insecond--one spot in front of subsequent GI DarleyAlcibiades heroine Stephanie’s Kitten (Kitten’s Joy)--inWoodbine’s GIII Natalma S. the following month. Jerryand Ronald Frankel bought into the filly at that point, but she could do no better than ninth behindStephanie’s Kitten in the GII Breeders’ Cup JuvenileFillies Turf at Churchill Nov. 4. It has been a verydifferent story this year. The chestnut showed a newdimension when rallying from far off the pace to annexGulfstream’s Jan. 22 Sweetest Chant S. and followedthat up with a more forwardly placed neck victory inthe GIII Herecomesthebride S. last time over Regalo Miaback in Hallandale Mar. 11. Traveling well within herself on an uncontested leadthrough splits of :23.70, :48.50 and 1:13 flat,Dayatthespa was briefly confronted by Andrew’s Girl(Lawyer Ron) turning for home, but something wentamiss with that rival and she was quickly pulled up.There were no other challengers for Dayatthespa at thatpoint, and she reported under the wire the easiest ofwinners from well-regarded Somali Lemonade, who waslast seen finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup JuvenileFillies Turf. This renewal of the Craven S. was robbed of apotential star turn when Most Improved (Ire) (Lawman{Fr}) was ruled out due to lameness, but, after theemphatic success of John Manley's Trumpet Major, itended up doing its job by showcasing a serious G1 2000 Guineas contender. Racing under a penalty forhis win in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster inSeptember, the dark bay tracked his prominent stablecompanion and 4-1 second favorite Crius (Ire) againstthe stands-side rail as Eastern Sun (Ire) led overallracing alone down the centre. Switched out for hiseffort approaching the quarter pole, Trumpet Majorseized the advantage passing that marker and openedup to score by five lengths from Crius to provide theRichard Hannon stable with a one-two. "He's twice thehorse he was last year and has done really well,”winning rider Ryan Moore said. “He's filled out and is alot bigger to sit on, and he'll definitely go to theGuineas with a chance." An early 2-year-old in the Hannon mold, TrumpetMajor broke his maiden over six furlongs at Goodwoodin May before making little impact in the G2 CoventryS. at Royal Ascot the next month. Beaten a short headby Talwar (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in the seven-furlongListed Winkfield S. back at Ascot in July, he was nearlynine lengths behind that rival when last of four ontesting ground in Sandown's G3 Solario S. a monthlater after an interim win in a conditions race on theJuly Course. Rebounding to win Doncaster's G2 Champagne S. on the St Leger undercard, hesuffered traffic problems when fifth--beaten less thantwo lengths--in the G1 Dewhurst S. at this venue inOctober. "The race was run at a good gallop and wentvery well," Moore commented. "They were all sortedout at halfway and I wanted to get him organised, asJohnny Murtagh who rode him in the Dewhurst said hetook a while to get going there. I probably got there toosoon, as he had a look in front." Making light of hisextra burden against some intriguing prospects headedby Godolphin's ultimately disappointing 7-2 favoriteMighty Ambition (Street Cry {Ire}), he dominated thisimportant 2000 Guineas trial--which his stable wonwith the subsequent Classic hero Tirol (Ire) in1990--from a long way out.

John Gosden thought enough of Questioning to tryhim in the G2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud last May,but he was fifth in that Classic trial prior to a gamethird in the G3 Darley S. over this track and trip inOctober. Denied a clear run when third--promoted tosecond--in the Apr. 1 Listed Doncaster Mile on his4-year-old bow, the bay stepped up off that promisingreturn to lower the colors of course specialist TwiceOver for a career-best. Settled off the early speed byWilliam Buick, he found a gap as the favorite was sentto the front passing the quarter pole, and rallied to wearhim down in the final strides. "He got knocked over atDoncaster the other day when he should have won, sohe deserved it," trainer John Gosden said of the winner, who had to survive an enquiry after leaning acrossTwice Over close home. "He's been a bit of a bad-luckhorse who has sometimes hung fire, but he's been inthe best form ever at home this year, and has stuck hisneck out today. He could run next in the G3 Huxley S.[at Chester May 10]."

Flaxman Holdings went to $1.2 millionto secure the former Druid Racing representative at lastyear’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Trainer GrahamMotion saddles the 6-year-old, who was campaigned byGerard Lyons last term to a six-length win in the GIII Arlington Matron S. and a trio of Grade I placings, for the first time. She has been stabled at Motion’s FairHill base ever since. “She was there all winter becauseit was so mild,” explained assistant trainer David Rock.“She missed no training at all. She had her last workthere Monday (five furlongs in 1:02) and arrived hereTuesday night.” Bill Mott sends out a fresh face of hisown in Juddmonte Farms’ Principal Role. The homebredwas a multiple stakes winner in Britain for Sir HenryCecil and finished third behind Midday (Oasis Dream{GB}) and Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) in last July’s G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood.
