Welcome back to school for the final half-term of the year! The next few weeks will be extremely busy, due to
lots of exciting events such as the Inflatables event, Sports Day, the District Sports, our Musical Evening, the
Summer Bonanza and the Year 6 play. Do keep an eye on the newsletter and the website to make sure that you don’t
miss out on an event. This week we sent out our Annual Parents’ Questionnaire; please do try to take a few moments to complete it as we would really like to be able to include your thoughts and
suggestions in our new School Development Plan. Thank you.
Fathers’ Day Sales These will be held during lunch on Wednesday (Small Hall),
Thursday and Friday (Group Room) next week and will provide the opportunity for children to come and
independently choose a gift for their Dads (or Grandads) to show their appreciation and thanks.
Gifts cost from 50p - £5.00.
Staffing News As you are already aware, Mrs Coughtrey is leaving us at the
end of the term to commence her new role as Deputy Headteacher at St. Thomas’ Junior School, Brentwood. Many
of you are also aware that Mrs Backhouse is leaving us to spend more time with her family and explore other career
options (still within teaching though). Sadly, Mrs Mara is also leaving us - after 11 years at Buttsbury, she felt it was time for a change so she has secured a class teaching position at
St. Anne’s Preparatory School in Chelmsford. We wish them all continued success in their new roles. If you would like to contribute to a present for Mrs Coughtrey, Mrs
Backhouse or Mrs Mara, a service has been set up on your child’s parentpay account to enable you to make a contribution by 29th June. As previously shared, Mr Adam Graves will be joining us in September as our new Deputy Headteacher. We will also be joined by Miss Gemma Cutmore who will be taking on the role of Year Group Leader and will also be a member of our Senior Leadership Team. Miss Cutmore currently teaches
at Great Wakering Primary School and is also a member of their Senior Leadership Team. Also joining us is Mrs Rebecca
Cheesman who has been appointed as our new Inclusion Manag-er. Mrs Cheesman is currently the Inclusion Manager at Ongar Primary School and thus brings great experience to the posi-
tion. And finally, our last team member - Mr Ross Frazer - who will be joining us as a Class Teacher. Mr Frazer was a SCITT trainee here in the Spring Term, so is already a familiar face! We look forward to them joining our team and sharing their
exciting new ideas!
Maths Master Class At the end of last half term some Year 3 and 4 children were chosen
to take part in the Maths Masterclass at Billericay School. Abby Caldon and Alex Lee represented the Year 3 team and Harriet
Rowe-Goodey and Austin Kelly competed as the Year 4 team. The competition was tough as some of the most able mathematicians in Billericay took part but they were no match for our children as we took first place in both year groups. A super achievement to all of
the children who took part!
Midday Assistant Vacancy We have a vacancy for a Midday Assistant to join
our friendly team on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 12.00pm - 1.20pm.
Joining our MDA team is a great way to step back into work perhaps as the hours fit perfectly around a family. The role could also be split into two roles of
two days each if preferred. Please contact Mrs Byfield in the School Office if
you are interested in joining our team.
‘Well Done’ to all the children who were awarded MERIT certificates this week.

Girls’ Netball Partnership Final – Wednesday 6th June 2018
On Wednesday our Year 6 Girls took part in the netball partnership final. Since Miss Taylor has been
going to this competition, she has never seen such determination and sportsmanship from all the girls
on and off the court. They all played some outstanding netball, including super shooting and
fantastic defending. The girls played against schools such as; Quilters, Elmwood, Oakfield and Trinity. We are extremely pleased to announce that we came 1st overall, with a huge 20 goal difference (which hasn’t happened before). This means that we are off to the
County Finals which we believe is a first in netball for us! Let’s hope that we can do it all again at the County Final! A huge thank you to Mrs Coughlan and
Ms Hoare for attending the event and supporting our girls with transport and to Miss Taylor, our Netball
Coach and Team Manager.

Afternoon Tea Having had to wait almost the whole year for their number
to be pulled out of the hat, this week’s lucky children excitedly made their way to the staff room, in readiness for
the lovely treats awaiting them. There’s no Afternoon Tea next week as the diary is a little
busy on Thursday but it will be business as usual on Thursday 21st June.
The Ark Day Care Centre - School Council Visit As part of our ongoing community project, another six of our School Council representatives from Years 3, 4 and 6 visited
The Ark Day Care Centre on Thursday afternoon. The Ark Day Care Centre aims to provide stimulating activities to reduce
isolation and increase interaction with others. The children visiting had baked some delicious cakes in
preparation for the event which were much enjoyed by all the clients and members of staff at The Ark. The children also
interacted and socialised with the clients by playing a game of giant dominoes and solving a complex puzzle. A huge thank you to all the children for baking their yummy cakes and also to
Mrs Felton and Mrs Willis for supervising the children during the visit.

Invitation to Ride During half-term, seven children in Years 3, 4 and 5 had the
opportunity to take part in a fully-sponsored pony riding morning at Runningwell Equestrian Centre. They had a
wonderful time and when they took part in a mini-gymkhana at the end of the morning, it was impossible to believe that this was their first time in the saddle! Well done to all the
children who took part and thank you to Rebecca Parker and The Friends of Runningwell for organising the event.
Clockwise from Top Left:
Philippa, Amy, Holly, Jenna and George.
Engineering Competition During the Spring Term, the Primary Leaders Engineering competition
was launched for all children across the school. The competition required the children to think of a solution to one of life’s little problems. From
there they would design the solution; annotate their design, explaining
their vision; before finally writing a persuasive letter to the judges to convince them to build their design (the prize for the national winner). We had a number of entries from across the age groups, with Charlotte Sell
(5T) winning the East of England award for her design, the Pen Pal. The ceremony took place on the 4th of June at the University of Hertfordshire where all the winners received a certificate and a trophy. There was also
an exhibition of the work from the winners as well as shortlisted and featured work from other children. Within the display, we had work from Ruby Walsh, Emily Harvey and Jasmine Briggs so congratulations also
go to these girls. All the children worked really well and Mr Tweedie is looking forward to launching the competition again next year.
Inter-House Architectural Design Competition During the last week of half term the children that were left at Buttsbury, whilst Year 6 were having fun in the Isle of Wight were set an Inter-House challenge to build famous British monuments out of newspaper. Each class
participated in their House groups and the end products were judged by the teachers and scored accordingly. There were some very interesting efforts
including a London Eye replica that even turned! The Buttsbury children can be very inventive with a goal and a newspaper! Lots of fun was had by all and it
was lovely to see the children collaborating on a joint project. The overall winning houses were the Jaguars and the Leopards but it was a
very close competition so well done to all of the children!
Around The World Week This week, the children of Buttsbury have been travelling Around the World! The school has been filled with the sounds of other places, with traditional
music and dances being taught. Some children even got to try new foods as part of their experiences.
The week started with an assembly based on colours, led by Miss Featherstone and Miss Unite. The children shared their ideas about the mean-
ings of colours before finding out what other cultures around the world be-lieved. They then led an enthusiastic sing-along to end the assembly, before
heading back to their classrooms to begin their trip around the world. Year 3 have been discovering the delights of China, learning about Chinese customs, food and music. During their rotation lessons, the
children made lanterns, made origami animals, created beautiful cherry blossom paintings and invented puppet shows about Chinese New Year.
Year 4 have explored the continent of Africa, linked to their learning on ‘The Buttefly Lion’ by Michael Morpurgo. They were further inspired this week by
the African clip ‘Zahra’ to create an imaginative diary entry and narrative from the perspective of Zahra. They began the week with a Geographical lesson,
where they created a picture map of Africa and identified key locations around the continent. They then took part in carousel of activities, including learning an African song, an African drama, creating a Maasai necklace and a Kente Cloth. They even had the opportunity to make African-inspired smoothies and go on
safari around the school field! Mexico was the destination for Year 5 and they leapt into action to learn a
Mexican Hat dance! Their artistic skills were fired up by creating Ojos de Dios and ‘Metapec’ (clay suns). They ended their topic with the thrilling opportunity
to crack open a piñata and reward themselves with sweet treats. Based on their recent experiences, Year 6 only travelled as far as the Isle of
Wight, but are now connoisseurs of everything related to the island! The children have thought about exploring the high seas as Admiral Nelson,
creating dramatic diary entries; created watercolour representations of the Needles and, the pièce de résistance… a survival guide to the Isle of Wight for
the Year 5 classes to refer to next year! The children have all had a fantastic week, with the opportunity to shine
creatively! Thanks to all the teachers for creating a fabulous themed week.
