Do you have diabetes and want support within yourcommunity Healthwatch Lewisham is setting up adiabetes peer support group in each localneighbourhood in the London Borough of Lewisham

SLaM community-based MH services rated Require Improvement Community-based mental health services forworking age adults at South London and Maudsley(SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust have been ratedRequires Improvement overall by the Care QualityCommission During the inspection in July 2017 CQC inspectorsrated the trustrsquos community based services as Requires Improvement for beingsafe effective and responsive Caring and well-led were rated as Good In the six months before the latest inspection there were 11 incidents whenpatients identified as in need of a Mental Health Act assessment were not assessedpromptly This was due to a lack of hospital beds complicated further by issuesbeyond the trusts control Thirty four of the 131 patientsrsquo risk assessments the CQC looked at did not have acurrent risk assessment and management plan in place In some teams care planswere not always completed in full to ensure that patients received appropriatesupport Staff in some early intervention teams had caseload sizes in excess of the nationallyrecommended maximum number This created pressure on the teams andpotentially affected the quality of care that patients received CQC rated the core community based services as being Good for well-led despitehaving rated it as Requires Improvement in three domains This recognises thatservice managers were already aware of the issues found relating to riskassessments and care plans and were working actively to address them at the timeof the inspection You can read the report in full by clicking here

E-support for Families and Friends of Individuals affected by Psychosis Help test the new online resource COPe-support that gives information and support forcarers supporting a loved one with psychosis The EFFIP (E-support for Families amp Friends ofIndividuals affected by Psychosis) Project aims to develop and evaluate an onlineresource for carers providing peer support and information on psychosis copingand management strategies for common symptoms and ways for carers to look afterthemselves

The online resource-prototype COPe-support accessible via httpcope-supportorg is nearly developed and ready to use They need carers to try this outand give feedback on how well it works ndash such as can you log on easily from homehow well it navigates This feedback will be used to refine COPe-support furtherand make it better

GP Extended Access Service Launched in April 2017 the Lewisham GP ExtendedAccess Service (which is based at Lewisham Hospital)offers additional GP and nurse appointments from8am-8pm 7 days a week (including bank holidays) topatients registered with a Lewisham GP Appointmentsmust be booked in advance (it is not a walk-in service)and are just like appointments at a GP practice Jennifer visited the service with her 18-year-olddaughter Jenniferrsquos daughter had an appointment fora painful and swollen arm ldquoI only called my GP practice this morning but theycouldnrsquot see me todayrdquo she said ldquoThey offered me an appointment here and wewere able to come If I hadnrsquot been able to come here today Irsquod have probablygone to AampErdquo Jennifer has been to the service before ldquoI knew about it because Icame here about three weeks agordquo said Jennifer ldquoOn that day Irsquod been feelingreally unwell and I went to AampE When I was seen they said I could be treated hereso made an appointment for me I was treated very well and was even able to liedown while I waited for my appointmentrdquo For more information on the GP Extended Access Service pleasevisit wwwonehealthlewishamcoukgpea or ask at your GP practice

Get your flu jab as soon as possible to protect yourself over the winter period Ifyou think you are eligible contact your local GP surgery or ask your localpharmacist

You should have the flu vaccination every year so you stay protected as the virusesthat cause flu change every year Adults who are not eligible for a free vaccination can have the vaccinationprivately from a pharmacist to help them ward off common winter illnesses

GP Extended Access Service Launched in April 2017 the Lewisham GP ExtendedAccess Service (which is based at Lewisham Hospital)offers additional GP and nurse appointments from8am-8pm 7 days a week (including bank holidays) topatients registered with a Lewisham GP Appointmentsmust be booked in advance (it is not a walk-in service)and are just like appointments at a GP practice Jennifer visited the service with her 18-year-olddaughter Jenniferrsquos daughter had an appointment fora painful and swollen arm ldquoI only called my GP practice this morning but theycouldnrsquot see me todayrdquo she said ldquoThey offered me an appointment here and wewere able to come If I hadnrsquot been able to come here today Irsquod have probablygone to AampErdquo Jennifer has been to the service before ldquoI knew about it because Icame here about three weeks agordquo said Jennifer ldquoOn that day Irsquod been feelingreally unwell and I went to AampE When I was seen they said I could be treated hereso made an appointment for me I was treated very well and was even able to liedown while I waited for my appointmentrdquo For more information on the GP Extended Access Service pleasevisit wwwonehealthlewishamcoukgpea or ask at your GP practice

and social care services But opinionsof University Lewisham Hospitalcontinue to vary widely We found that peoplersquos views of GPpractices were more positive duringthe last three months The majority ofpatients were happy with thetreatment and advice they received attheir surgeries However access to GPappointments remains a recurringissue across the borough The quality of treatment and careprovided by University HospitalLewisham was also praised by localresidents but comments also showedthat residents are having vastlydifferent experiences even when usingthe same hospital services Lack ofcommunication and waiting timeswere the most common themes for negative feedback Multiple patients foundthemselves experiencing long waits in wards unsure of what the next steps wouldbe Staffing levels was highlighted as an issue with some users being told thatthere were no doctors available to see them To read our latest intelligence report please click here Healthwatch Lewisham produces an intelligence report at the end of each financialquarter analysing the patient stories we have received We then share our findingsand recommendations with commissioners and service providers in the boroughThe aim of our reports is to help improve the quality of local health and social careservices

SLaM community-based MH services rated Require Improvement Community-based mental health services forworking age adults at South London and Maudsley(SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust have been ratedRequires Improvement overall by the Care QualityCommission During the inspection in July 2017 CQC inspectorsrated the trustrsquos community based services as Requires Improvement for beingsafe effective and responsive Caring and well-led were rated as Good In the six months before the latest inspection there were 11 incidents whenpatients identified as in need of a Mental Health Act assessment were not assessedpromptly This was due to a lack of hospital beds complicated further by issuesbeyond the trusts control Thirty four of the 131 patientsrsquo risk assessments the CQC looked at did not have acurrent risk assessment and management plan in place In some teams care planswere not always completed in full to ensure that patients received appropriatesupport Staff in some early intervention teams had caseload sizes in excess of the nationallyrecommended maximum number This created pressure on the teams andpotentially affected the quality of care that patients received CQC rated the core community based services as being Good for well-led despitehaving rated it as Requires Improvement in three domains This recognises thatservice managers were already aware of the issues found relating to riskassessments and care plans and were working actively to address them at the timeof the inspection You can read the report in full by clicking here

SLaM community-based MH services rated Require Improvement Community-based mental health services forworking age adults at South London and Maudsley(SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust have been ratedRequires Improvement overall by the Care QualityCommission During the inspection in July 2017 CQC inspectorsrated the trustrsquos community based services as Requires Improvement for beingsafe effective and responsive Caring and well-led were rated as Good In the six months before the latest inspection there were 11 incidents whenpatients identified as in need of a Mental Health Act assessment were not assessedpromptly This was due to a lack of hospital beds complicated further by issuesbeyond the trusts control Thirty four of the 131 patientsrsquo risk assessments the CQC looked at did not have acurrent risk assessment and management plan in place In some teams care planswere not always completed in full to ensure that patients received appropriatesupport Staff in some early intervention teams had caseload sizes in excess of the nationallyrecommended maximum number This created pressure on the teams andpotentially affected the quality of care that patients received CQC rated the core community based services as being Good for well-led despitehaving rated it as Requires Improvement in three domains This recognises thatservice managers were already aware of the issues found relating to riskassessments and care plans and were working actively to address them at the timeof the inspection You can read the report in full by clicking here

E-support for Families and Friends of Individuals affected by Psychosis Help test the new online resource COPe-support that gives information and support forcarers supporting a loved one with psychosis The EFFIP (E-support for Families amp Friends ofIndividuals affected by Psychosis) Project aims to develop and evaluate an onlineresource for carers providing peer support and information on psychosis copingand management strategies for common symptoms and ways for carers to look afterthemselves

The online resource-prototype COPe-support accessible via httpcope-supportorg is nearly developed and ready to use They need carers to try this outand give feedback on how well it works ndash such as can you log on easily from homehow well it navigates This feedback will be used to refine COPe-support furtherand make it better
