No.35 Friday, 13th November, 2015

Dear Parents,

We only need to look to the scriptures for guidance on how to live our lives each and every day. While

today has been declared World Kindness Day in true fact our aim as Catholics is to strive to be kind

every day:

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:32

The value of declaring Days such as World Kindness Day is that it in doing so we are encouraged to

reflect on how we are going in our efforts to live out the scripture values. What are our responses to

each of these questions?

When have you been particularly kind to someone? When have you experienced exceptional kindness?

Are there ways you could be kind to the people in your life today?

Perhaps the list below will give you a reminder of the gifts of kindness that cost

nothing but mean everything to those in our lives:

8 Gifts of Kindness

1. The Gift of Listening… But you must really listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your

response. Just listening.

2. The Gift of Affection… Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and

handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends.

3. The Gift of Laughter… Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, "1 love to

laugh with you."

4. The Gift of a Written Note… A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and

may even change a life.

5. The Gift of a Compliment… A simple and sincere, "You look great in red," "You did a super job" or

"That was a wonderful meal" can make someone’s day.

6. The Gift of a Favour… Every day, go out of your way to do something kind.

7. The Gift of Solitude… There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be

sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others.

8. The Gift of a Cheerful Disposition… The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to

someone, really it’s not that hard to say, Hello or Thank You.

Remembrance Day On Wednesday we had a beautiful ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day. We were very fortunate to have Monsignor John Boyle join us in prayer as we remembered those that fought to keep Australia safe and free. Thank you to Mr Visser and the School Leaders who helped lead the prayers and planted crosses in remembrance of those who had died. Congratulations to Oliver Singleton-Turner who solemnly played the Last Post and the reveille for us.

St Vincent de Paul Next week marks the start of our St Vincent de Paul Christmas hamper collection. St Bernadette’s has always been so generous with bringing in Christmas food items to be distributed to those who are less fortunate than us. We have recently been able to help those suffering in Jamaica and now we look to help those in our neighbourhood as they face a bleak Christmas without our help. We ask families to kindly donate items of food that are non-perishable and can be stored without refrigeration, eg. tinned fruit and vegetables, canned food, biscuits, pasta, Christmas puddings and Christmas treats etc. All donations

of food can be sent straight to classrooms all of next week before they are collected by St Vincent de Paul. Mrs Shane Robinson Religious Education Coordinator

11th November 1918. Over 61 000 brave men and women had risked their lives and made the supreme sacrifice to bring us the freedom, justice and peace we continue to enjoy in Australia today. We rejoice for the heroes of our world, the brave souls who have helped Australia remain a free, respectful and peaceful country. Ponder on this. Your covered in goose bumps and your back is scarred with wounds. Smoke rises as far as the eye can see and bangs and booms ring out and shrapnel flies from all around you. You want to stop and just flee to the safety of home, yet you remain strong, draw on your pride and keep going to fight for your country and your beliefs. Today, on the 11th day of the 11th month, many years on from that fateful event, we Australians, still free, re-member those who fought for our country in struggles and wars around the world. We remember those men and women who fought on the ground, in the air, and in and on the water. At St. Bernadette’s, we commemorated this special day beginning with our Remembrance Day Commemoration ceremony, where we looked back on how these men and women fought courageously for us with one minute’s silence and reflected on Monsignor John’s words which gave great insight into what it must have been like in the war. We responded in prayer and listened solemnly and respectfully to the Last Post and Reveille played by Oli-ver Singleton-Turner. After the whole school ceremony, the school captains presented a commemorative cross to each class for their class prayer space. At 11 am, the school leaders planted 62 crosses in the garden near the Office - each cross representing 1000 brave servicemen and women. Two extra crosses were planted in front of the Gallipoli Rose-mary bushes near our Lone Pine - and paused for a minute’s silence to honour their memory. We remembered The Ode

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them. Lest we forget.

Pupil Free Days:

(Week 11)

St. Bernadette’s Christmas Concert

Our concert is to be held on Monday 7th

December at 6.30 pm on the grass area. It will

be lead by special guest Peter Kearney. Peter

Kearney is a contemporary religious singer who

has toured Australia, Ireland, United States and

the United Kingdom to present workshops and

concerts.

Looking forward to seeing all our school

community enjoy a wonderful night.

Congratulations to Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Hurba on the

excellent performance of the St Bernadette’s Choir at

the Variety Club’s Celebration Sing Out held last Sunday

evening at the Sydney Town Hall.

In the concert the children joined with schools from

across Sydney to sing Walking in the Air, Take These

Wings, Oye, Jerusalem, Les Mis and O Come All Ye

Faithful. The audience really was treated to a wonderful

evening of singing.

I would like to thank both Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Hurba

for their many hours of dedication and organisation with

the St Bernadette’s Choir over many years. Both

teachers have done this in a voluntary capacity during

this time and we are extremely grateful for their

passion for music and performance that they have

brought to the choir experience for our children. Sadly

both Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Hurba will be retiring from

these positions at the end of the year. Once again we

thank them and wish them every happiness in their

retirement from their voluntary work with the St

Bernadette’s Choir.

Library Book Club Thank you for your support throughout the

year, we have been able to use the points for

school resources. The booklets for Book

Club were sent home this week. This will be

the last book club for the year. Orders

should be completed by the

Friday, 20th November.

Overdue Books

The overdue notices will be

sent home with the children

next week. If the book/books can't be found

don't panic. Sometimes children return the

books to the wrong place. Just let us know if

there is a difficulty and we'll do our best to fix

the problem. Thank you for your cooperation

with this matter.
