Anti-Bullying Week in England
‘All Different, All Equal’ Anti-bullying week is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and
this year takes place from the 14th-18th November. At school we
are having a focus on this issue in all year groups from Monday 20th November.
Anti-Bullying Week shines a spotlight on bullying and encourages all
children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year. Pupils will be discussing this issue in PSHE lessons and thinking about how they can be a ‘Power for Good’
which is the slogan for this year for pupils, teachers and parents.
Year 7 Anti-Bullying Day As a school, it is important that all our pupils feel safe and understand what is meant by bullying, how it can impact on young people and how it can be avoided. On Wednesday 15th November, Year 7 will be off timetable (but wearing full school uniform) to explore a range of issues around bullying. We will look at school policies like the Reward and Sanction Policy, the Home School
Agreement and the Anti-Bullying Policy. In these, there is an
emphasis on all pupils showing respect and dignity towards each other.
Pupils will have a focused assembly, develop their ideas about the issue in a series of lessons, discuss the impact of bullying and how we can all play our part to be value the fact that we are ‘All Different, All Equal’.
Mrs Ayre, Head of Life Skills.

IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL IN SCHOOL With the cold and flu season upon us, we would like to remind parents of the
procedures for illness.
If your child is absent from school due to illness, please contact the Attendance Officer before 9am to report the absence leaving your child’s
name, form, details for absence and when they are likely to return.
If your child is unwell whilst in school, they should report to their Year
Student Manager. If a student has an elevated temperature and/is displaying signs of illness, parents will be contacted by the school and asked to collect their child from school.
Students with minor ailments will be encouraged to stay in school where possible.
We do not normally contact parents if students are reporting headaches, tummy aches etc. unless we have a cause of concern. On occasion, we may contact parents if pupils request paracetamol to help them manage slight
discomfort.
We ask that parents do not arrive at school to collect
pupils unless you have been contacted by a member of
staff and not your child.
Mrs McGowan, Attendance Officer.
ARMISTICE DAY Remembrance Day is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those
who have given their lives in war. On this day, people across the world pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women.
The Sunday nearest to the 11th November is always Remembrance Sunday. This year, Remembrance Sunday will be on Sunday 12th November.
The date is significant as it was when the Armistice was signed to end the
fighting in WW1. It began on 11th November 1918 at 11am. After WW1, it was decided that due to the length and destruction of the conflict, and the huge amount of casualties, that every 11th November would be remembered
to reflect on the sacrifices the soldiers made. Initially it was known as Armistice Day, but after WW2 was renamed as Remembrance Day.
As history has progressed and other conflicts have occurred, it has become a day to remember the dead from all wars across the world.
Mrs A’Bear, Head of History & Politics.

Y9 RESPECT AND RELATIONSHIPS DAY On Wednesday 1st November, Year 9 pupils enjoyed an informative day having the opportunity to consider lots of issues associated with developing
healthy relationships.
They took part in activities examining such things as healthy and unhealthy relationships, equality, pleasure, respect, abuse, sexuality, gender identity,
sex and consent. The sessions should help our young people to know how to keep safe online and understand about respect and equality in all
relationships. The pupils benefitted from working with a number of external organisations who specialise in this kind of work.
Our pupils demonstrated that they can participate in a positive and
respectful way when dealing with sensitive and complicated personal issues. Mrs Ayre, Head of Life Skills.

MONDAY 6TH – FRIDAY 17TH NOVEMBER 2017 The Bebras Computing Challenge introduces Computational Thinking to students. It is organised in over 40 countries and is designed to get students
all over the world excited about computing.
All students in Y7 and Y8 will participate in the challenge during their normal Computing lessons. In addition, those students who are undertaking either
GCSE Computer Science or GCSE ICT will also take part. The Bebras challenges are made of a set of short problems called Bebras tasks and are
delivered online.
The tasks are fun, engaging and based on problems that Computer Scientists often meet and enjoy solving. All the tasks can be solved without prior
knowledge but instead require logical thinking. The aim is to solve as many as they can in the allotted time.
There are a number of certificates/awards that can be won, including:
Certificate of Participation
Certification of Merit
Certification of Distinction
Best in School
We also had a number of students who were in the top 10% of the achieving
results in the country last year!
This year, we are hoping to go further and gain entry to the finals which are held at Oxford University – our students will certainly have a good go!
Good luck to all!
Mrs Jenner, Head of Computer Science & Mrs Looker, Teacher of Computing/IT.

ARTS ACADEMY NEWS This week, Drama and Theatre Studies students went to watch Frantic Assembly's critically acclaimed production of "Things I know to be True" at
The Storyhouse Theatre in Chester.
The performance follows the lives of four siblings struggling to define themselves beyond their parents’ love and expectations. The students were in
awe of the actor’s professional and slick performance and absorbed every moment of the play.
They were great ambassadors for the school and were a credit to the Arts Academy. This is one of many theatre trips on offer to students who are part of the Arts Academy.
Mrs Aylward, Head of Performing Arts.

YEAR 8 WHIZZ KIDS Grace Robertshaw performed in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe at the Liverpool Empire in October, as did several other students from our school
who attend the Debra Lister Academy of Dance in St Helens. They all performed beautifully and we are really proud of them.
Charlotte Strong has been working hard to organise a Year 8 Inter-Form FIFA
tournament. There a range of eager players across the Year 8 forms taking part in this tournament. Entry is £1 and the initial knockout rounds started 06/11/17
and have run throughout the week. Money raised will go towards the Alzheimer's Society, the UK's leading dementia support and research charity. Sit tight to find
out who will be crowned Rainhill's FIFA 18 champ!
A massive thank you to Matthew Morrison and Daniel Johnson who have organised an Inter-Form football competition for their year group to raise funds
for the Cuba Appeal. The competition is being held on Tuesday 28th November from 3.30pm to 5.00pm on the Astro. Each player has donated £1 to take part,
with spectators being asked to pay 50p each to be a part of the excitement. So far they have raised £50 which has secured a braille machine. Well done boys!
Well done to form 8A who took part in a sponsored silence to raise funds for the Cuba appeal. So far, pupils have raised £77 for the appeal and have donated
equipment such as pens and pencils to be sent over.
