Change in Date for DofE Award Presentations

The current calendared date for the DofE Award Presentation ceremony, December 7,

unfortunately clashes with several activities so I have rearranged this ceremony so that more

    people are able to attend.

The new date for the DofE Award Presentation ceremony is on the 8 February, 2018 starting

at 7:30pm in the School Chapel.

At this ceremony students who have finished their Bronze or Silver Awards this year will be

awarded their certificate and badge in recognition of their success competing their DofE level.

Each section of the award takes commitment, perseverance and dedication to complete and I

very much hope that you are available to join us for this presentation to acknowledge the

achievements of these young people and celebrate their success.

    Netball Summary

Under 18 vs Callywith College Won 32-23 An exciting, good-spirited game against Callywith in school's first ever fixture against them, went our way. Although always in control, the girls had to work hard to fend off a late fight back from Callywith. The match was an opportunity to experiment a little with the line-up and some squad players saw good court time. Cerys at WA was a steadying influence and fed the circle beautifully. Under 12 vs Richard Lander Won 12-3 8 girls played in the fixture and a new combination took to the court each quarter. The girls defended 'man to man' very well with several interceptions made. The defensive effort of the team made it hard for Richard Lander to get the ball to their shooters. Play through the centre court was excellent, well timed and quick. A few balls were lost trying to pass a long ball to our shooters. Player of the match was Libby. Under 13 vs Richard Lander Won 15-10 After a strong first quarter the girls were ahead by four goals. However they were pegged back in the second and were now only ahead by two. After some tactical changes in the third quarter the girls moved convincingly ahead yet again and this time they were not going to let their opponents back into the game. Excellent defence from Anya and accurate shooting from Charlotte, but player of the match was Evelyn. U14 vs Richard Lander Lost Under 15 vs Richard Lander Lost 11-22 This was a lovely game against a strong opposition. Truro were without four key players, allowing other pupils to get some additional court time and some well earnt rest for those four players. Truro improved every quarter and must be commended on a good score against Richard Landers strongest. Jess B was voted Truro’s player of the match by Richard Lander. A special mention for Laura and Jess C who had to fill in as goal shooter, neither of their positions. Under 16 vs Richard Lander Lost 17-23 The Under 16s travelled away with a slightly amended team. Jenny and Bimini stepped in and performed superbly. Molly dominated in attack and scored many goals for the team, her leadership and encouragement to her peers cannot be faulted. Despite leading after the first quarter, RL came back fighting and were determined to take the lead. Grace and Zoe worked hard in centre court and Mary and Maddie continued to bond their defensive relationship proven that they deserve to call those positions their own. The final score was 17 – 23, and although disappointed, the girls had a fantastic competitive fixture. Grace was voted player of the match.

Under 14 County Netball Tournament The County tournament is what the girls have been training for and to have it on home soil was a bonus. Getting together before the tournament and informing the girls they had 8 matches 112 minutes just to get to the semi-finals and the toughest pool they knew they had to play to the best of their ability. The first match was against St Ives who started strong in the first half but Truro upped their game and won 18-5. Truro High school were next and once again, Truro won 15-5. Richard Lander were the next opponents, the girls lost to them in the previous week so they wanted to turn the tables but Richard Lander were far more clinical and made few mistakes. Truro gave away too many passes and lost 8-11. The other results were all wins. Wadebridge 11-2, Launceston 17-0, Brannel 17-1, Newquay Tretherras 9-5, Penair 8-3. We came runners up in our pool so had to play the winners of the other pool, Penryn. In the past County tournaments we always came runners up but if lost this match we wouldn't qualify for the Regional tournament. At halftime, it was 3-2 to Penryn and the second half was just as tense. Truro turned over a Penryn centre pass

  • which put us level. On the final whistle it was 7-7 but we had been awarded a penalty which our shooter confidently shot!!! We had qualified and it was so deserved. We had to play Richard Lander in the final but I think the excitement and relief of the players they did not play their best and loss 5-13. Well done to you all a great result. S Maund, P Allister, E Straw, N Read, M Yoki, H Bradley (capt), A Rawlinson, A Searle, K Fear, S Hooper Hockey Match Reports Wednesday 8 November – Under 12 vs Newquay Tretherras Truro Under 12 girls faced Tretherras School on Wednesday 8th November away in Newquay. From the start Truro School looked calm and in control, they passed the ball well under pressure and made strong tackles where necessary. With a mixed ability team and a new formation the girls played brilliantly together, attacking in pairs and passing the ball to beat defenders and score a beat goal in the first half. Truro School truly found their stride scoring three quick successive goals within the first 5 minutes of the second half and kept their press tight while defending so as to keep the ball away from their defensive circle. End result Newquay 0, Truro School 4. Miss Munn Monday 13 November- Under 15 Girls vs THS- 0-0 The majority of the game, Truro School dominated, having the majority of the possession. There were some well worked passages of play and our girls attacked into the space well, they worked towards getting upgrades near the ‘D’ which resulted in being awarded short corners. Our girls attacked wide and defended narrow working together which kept THS still away from getting any chance of scoring a goal. We were unlucky not to get a goal, I think it was only going to be a matter of time. Great Effort Girls and Well Done! Miss Manley Tuesday 14th November- Under 18 Girls County Indoor Tournament The Under 18 Girls’ Hockey team hosted the Indoor County Tournament on Tuesday facing Truro High School and Truro College. The girls struggled to get to grips with the transfer from outdoor to indoor hockey to begin with. Truro High School exploited this well, cleverly using the sidelines to move the ball up the pitch at pace. Some clinical finishing meant that a 4-1 loss was not entirely representative with us having wasted a couple of goal opportunities. The Truro College game was a much closer game with both teams now getting used to the use of sidewalls and not lifting the ball. The College quickly took a 2-0 lead but a resilient attitude along with newfound clinical finishing meant that we came back to win 3-2 in the second half. A good performance from the girls and a good way to finish some of their school Indoor careers. Mr Ricketts/Miss Cobner Saturday 18 November- Under 18 vs Plymouth College 1-1 and Shebbear 0-4 loss The 1st XI were in a determined mood as they lined up for their first triangular fixture of the season with three Under 16 players making their 1st XI debut. The team scored an early opening goal against Plymouth College from some good attacking pressure and were disappointed when their opponents scored a late goal to equalise the match. The team then faced Shebbear whose pace in attack rattled the team who conceded a goal in the first minute. Truro raised their game against a strong Shebbear side but as the match went on the fresher Shebbear team who had not played two games back to back, started to dominate as the Truro girls tired. Despite losing this match the team were pleased with their performance overall and are looking forward to the next triangular fixture against Kelly College and Westbuckland. Mr Ricketts/Miss Cobner Saturday 18 November- Under 14/15 vs Plymouth College 3-0 win A combined Under 14/Under 15 girls played Plymouth college in a fast paced 11-a-side Match last Saturday. Truro girls spread the play across the pitch well and attacked down both sides with good pace. Skillful play down the centre of the pitch and into the Plymouth defensive circle where a hard slap from Elinor Powell straight past the goal keeper opened the scoring. Plymouth College were far from a walk over though as the looked sharp on the attack also, however, their efforts were fruitless as the Truro defenders and goal keeper Grace Morgan-Lundy cleared the ball every time. A Truro School short corner doubled the goals to 2-0 with another strong slap into the backboard. After half time Truro came out strong once more and after some excellent linking play between left back Ellie Love and left half Rosie Bartlett the ball was once again fired into the goal, this time a strong reverse, 3-nil to Truro School. Although looking like scoring again the Truro girls finished the match on the same score with great intensity. A special mention it due to Millie Danielson who achieved Player of the Match for her great performance.

  • Miss Munn Saturday 18th Nov- Under 12 vs Plymouth College and Shebbear Under 12 girls' hockey team 0-3 Lost v's Shebbear It was lovely to see the 1st years play. We started off well passing the ball but couldn't quite stretch the play to enable us to attack and score goals. We defended well but Shebbear were able to take their chances and we finished the game 3-0 down. 0-4 V's Lost v's Plymouth College Going into the second game I asked the girls to increase their pace on the ball and to try and hit the ball harder. There were some lovely hard hits from the captain and the girls definitely picked up the pace but couldn't quite take their chances at scoring goals finishing the game 0-4. Lots to work on - keep up the good work! Miss Wyatt Saturday 18 Nov- Under 13 vs Plymouth College and Shebbear Truro vs Shebbear College 0-5 loss Truro vs Plymouth College 1-6 loss On Saturday the 18 November, the Under 13 girls’ team represented the school in a tough 7-a-side mini tournament at Shebbear College. After arriving at 8:30am to get the mini bus, the girls proved to be in high spirits and were keen to get going. Throughout the day, they showed great tenacity, consistently aiming to improve their game play and support the team, even when injured. Both Shebbear College and Plymouth College proved to be challenging competition scoring 5 goals and 6 goals respectively against our team. However, following some excellent saves from our goalie and strong pressure against the opposition, the girls proceeded to score in the last few minutes of the match against Plymouth College. The Plymouth College coach commented on the way in which our team really did make their team panic in the second half. Following a hot tea, the team made their way back to Truro School still in high spirits, ready to take on the next challenge. ‘ Miss Woods Monday 20 November- Under 12 vs THS 0-1 loss On Monday, the Under 12 Girls’ Hockey team played a very strong Truro High School team. The opening half was a close affair with both teams having chances to score but neither being able to capitalise on some very good midfield play. After half time, the High School came out with a higher sense of urgency and had several chances to score, all superbly saved by the energetic L. Mantle. With the game looking like heading towards a tense 0-0 draw, the High School finally managed to sneak a goal, and take an incredibly tight win that could have gone either way. Miss Munn/Mr Ricketts Monday 20 November- Under 13 vs THS 2-2 It was an extremely equal game, with end to end stuff throughout. Opportunities from both teams were slowly building but THS managed to break to get the 1st goal. Our girls continued to battle and fought back, with a fantastic passage of play we got a goal back. Going into the second half we knew the result could go either way but the girls continued to stay strong and focussed, with the intensity of the game slowly moving faster and with limited time to go the girls broke to get a well worked goal by using nearly every player in the team. With only a couple of minutes to go our girls were tired and struggled to keep that high intensity up, THS broke and managed to score. The game was a fantastic effort from all and a well fought game from both teams. Well Done Girls! Miss Manley Thursday 23 November- Under 16 Boys County Tournament With 7 teams in the group of who were all talented schools, we knew it was going to be a tough day of hockey. With it being a round robin each game was only 12 minutes one way as there was approx. 17 games to get through. It took us a while to wake up, get focussed and play the hockey we were capable of. In most of the games it was the same story we had the majority of the possession but didn’t take our chances and even when we were in the ‘D’ we didn’t take advantage of winning short corners. The opposition had one or two breaks and took their chances of scoring while they were in front of goal. With only scoring one goal throughout the entire day we knew our chances of getting through to the regionals were limited. Our boys individually are extremely talented players with a high skill level and there was some lovely passages of play but it wasn’t enough, the boys didn’t play as a team throughout and tried to do too much themselves which certainly affected the overall result. Miss Manley

  • Thursday 23 November- Under 18 Boys County Indoor Tournament What an amazing indoor match! The boys battled hard, moving the ball with pace & precision scoring some great goals. After four 15 minute quarters the scored was tied 6-6. We played an extra 15 minutes and scored another couple of goals but Truro College managed to tie and with 1.5mins left on the clock they scored another goal to go one up. Unfortunately their player was injured scoring the goal so the game was abandoned. We are awaiting confirmation of whether the match will be replayed. M.Austin (capt) led the team well with a hat-trick. Alongside, T.Bradley scored 3 and Bertie scored 2. Special mention for O.Chamberlain in goal. It was a great competitive game - well done! Mrs Wyatt
