Postcard collecting has become a very popular hobby since the postcard's obscure beginnings in early 19th century Germany. Over the past few years we have been able to acquire a number of postcards through any of a number of sources including eBay. Some of these postcards are very old and very rare… More importantly is not their financial value but the sentimental chance to take a look back at times gone by… These are great snapshots of our ancestral origins. Some communities in Germany have even published books containing whole collections of the many postcards from it’s and the surrounding areas. It is actually quite impressive. Plus it gives us a chance to examine, inquire and even learn more about the culture and people who are our Family… Our Ancestors! Color versions available online. Enjoy! Happy Holidays From The Family Tree Chronicle!

Fröhliche Weihnachten! Merry Christmas!

Christmas and the Holidays... What better time could there be than to celebrate, share and enjoy family! This is and always will be a special time of year for all of us. What better time could there be to learn more about and share in our ancestry! Over the next few pages you will find some postcard images. Yes, postcards! As 2010 winds down, it’s a great time to reflect and remember those who are close to us, have gone before us and those to come. As we conclude the very first year of our family newsletter, it has has been incredible one. The Family Tree Chronicle has been quite a success. Well received and quite popular…. A huge thank you to all who have contributed to it in one way or another. It is great to know that so many people appreciate, share the passion of or are just interested in our family history. In retrospect it looks like 2010 was primarily dominated by research on our

Feder line. For so many years this line eluded us but it certainly is opening up...and much of the genealogical research continues. Additionally, work on the Family Tree Chronicle web site continues and so does the updating of our family tree database. Hopefully by mid 2011 the new update will be available and online. So continue to stay in touch! Wünschen Sie ein Heiliges Weihnachten und Glückliches Neujahr! (Wishing you a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!)

Germany and many other places from around the world celebrate Christmas and the Holidays with a special, often outdoor open market called the Christkindl Market. Below are two very popular Christkindl Markets. One is from Nürnberg, Germany.

It dates back to 1545 and is from near where our Feder Family Line originates and the other is from Chicago. Look closely at the bottom right photo, you’ll see Dan Jungclas, our Publisher/Editor at the 2010 Christkindl Market in Chicago!

Feder Family Update

MAP OF SOUTH CENTRAL GERMANY

Research continues both in Germany and here in the USA. From the research, we know that John Adam Feder was born and baptized in Cadolzburg, Germany. Even his marriage records indicate this. Research has shown us that he was married several times…. four to be exact. The first time was in Cadolzburg, Germany and the remaining 3 times in St. Louis, MO, USA. Shortly after have been married on 4 sep 1844, the first time, he and his wife, Maria Julianna Dümmler, left Germany and immigrated to the United States. However, we quickly loose all trace of this first wife. There is no record of her death in Germany and neither is there one in the USA. We suspect that she died either on the trip to the USA or shorty after arriving in the USA. Unfortunately there are so few death records for this time period… the 1840’s & 1850’s… her death record could not be found. So we know from the St. Louis Marriage records that he married an additional three times. His second wife was Anna Dorothea Wolf (married 6 Sep 1846) and they had a daughter named Sophia on 21 May 1848 in St. Louis, MO. He then married his third wife, Catharina Weil, on 19 May 1850 and his fourth wife, Henrietta Schotte, on 27 Oct 1850. Wow! He remarried so quickly! How is this possible? Again, there are so few death records for this time frame that death records for neither his second or third wife could be found. But searching through the death records that do exist an obvious explanation for this was found. That being the deaths were the results

of a severe break out of Cholera. And since there were so many due too the Cholera breakout, not all of them were recorded. The cholera breakout certainly offers an explanation and having such a young daughter would explain why he remarried so quickly. Additionally, the actual death records of Henrietta Feder nee Schotte as well as John Adam Feder continue to elude our research. We suspect Henrietta Schotte died in the early 1890’s and John Adam Feder in the mid 1890’s but death records either don’t exist or were lost. So we turned to burial records but again they continue to elude us. It is thought that they are buried in the Wilmington Baptist Cemetery in Fiskburg, Kentucky but any headstones have been lost and most of the cemetery’s records have been lost or destroyed as well. Again these continue to elude the research. Speaking of records that continue to elude our research… We know that John Adam Feder came from Cadolzburg and that his forefathers eventually came from a smaller village nearby. That village is Zautendorf. Refer to the map below. Our earliest reference to the Feder line is in about 1657 in Zautendorf. However many of the records from Zautendorf are not available and still elude us. Why? We are not sure. It is thought that many of these records from Zautendorf are owned and held privately by the Leonrod Family. Apparently the records became property of this family somehow and we attempting to tracking them down so we can continue the research on our Feder line.
