The Bonn Nexus Conference encourages system thin- king: What are the linkages between sectors, environ- mental externalies, and synergies between human well-being and ecosystem health? Ecosystem services are highlighted in Bonn as an im- portant pillar of human securies, but the role of freshwater ecosystems has been largely hidden in the nexus. With freshwater biodiversity and ecosystems disappearing much more rapidly than the terrestri- al ones, we are losing essenal services such as fish producon, water purificaon, carbon sequestraon, nutrient cycling and resilience against shocks. Drivers behind this loss of freshwater ecosystems include wa- ter abstracon, dams, polluon, land use and climate change. The Global Water Needs Iniave (GWNI) of the Glo- bal Water System Project raises awareness for fresh- water ecosystems in rivers, lakes, wetlands and ripari- an zones and puts them into the context of managing and governing water and land. Rehabilitated wetland in Australia The GWNI provides scienfic knowledge on environ- mental flow requirements for maintaining or restoring freshwater ecosystems, in order to inform societal ne- goaons on desirable ecosystem services. It informs about risks and vulnerabilies associated with over- allocang freshwater to other compeng uses, such as irrigaon or power generaon. It builds a consolidated nexus-database on freshwater ecosystems, develops tools to quanfy tradeoffs for different water and land management alternaves and addresses associated governance challenges. A more resource efficient green economy depends on freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems as the natural capital from which to derive mulple benefits. GWNI provides new knowledge within a nexus approach for integrang environmental flows in the planning of new dams, diversions or land use in the catchment. With that it complements other nexus components such as increasing water use efficiency, reducing water demand, storing water more efficiently, and designing mul-use systems which co-produce various services. Together with partners from all sectors, the GWNI idenfies requirements for effecve governance struc- tures in order to move from awareness raising, negot - iaon and planning to implementaon of sustainable environmental flows.
