CANADA AND GLOBAL FOOD PRODUCTION Global market trends are also in Canada’s favour. By 2050, global food demand
is expected to rise by 70 per cent on the back of three billion more middle-class consumers – mostly in Asia – whose diets are shifting, including to more protein. A sophisticated, ethnically diverse consumer base stimulates product development at home and, as the world seeks out food from places it trusts, Canada’s brand will become even more appealing to discriminating consumers both here and abroad.
Clearly, Canada’s ag-food sector is well-positioned, so what’s missing? Despite our strengths, Canada ranks fifth globally in agriculture exports and
only 11th in processed-food product exports, behind far smaller countries such as Holland, and behind less economically advanced countries such as Brazil. Few of our food companies achieve world scale, and only 50 per cent of our agricultural production is processed here. Increasing our global market share of ag-food exports could add tens of billions of dollars to our economy More Trade/investment deals More emphasis on expert farming Tax policies (no carbon taxation) Infrastructure Investment (Roads, bridge, rail, ports) Review supply chain management system

FOOD PRODUCTION/SALINE SOIL In 2016 the Department of Economic Affairs
commissioned a study into salt tolerant crops and the right irrigation methods. This research project has resulted in the amazing discovery that certain crops actually tolerate salt water, if the right irrigation method is applied: by watering the roots, instead of spraying the leaves. All research data is now combined in the survey “Crop salt tolerance” by a consortium of Salt Farm Texel, Leiden University, Wageningen University & Research, VU University Amsterdam and The Wadden Academy. WATER / QUALITY / FOREIGN CONFLICTOnly 2.5 percent of the world’s water is fresh, drinkable water. Every year, snow melts off mountain peaks and runs into rivers, which feed into lakes. This water accounts for such a small percentage of earth’s surface — it’s no wonder wars have been waged over water, and some speculate water will be the cause of WWIII – Source – Global Citizen – March 26, 2016
