Throughout the world Christian churches decorate their places ofworship at Easter; and at this time of great significance flowers playan important part in the religious ceremonies.

Lilies are the most traditional Easter flowers and although sales for florists havediminished over the years there is still a place to show skill and artistry withstylish church pedestal designs that amateurs cannot do. Generally no flowersare permitted in church until after Good Friday, gold and white are theecclesiastical Easter colourings and the traditional Arum Lilies and LongiflorumLilies are the most popular Lilies used. Life is easy for the florist with the OASIS®

Pedestal Block as there is no fiddling about cutting floral foam; the block isdesigned especially for large arrangements. Follow our step-by-step instructionsto make a stunning pedestal design.

Step 1 - To aid longer life for the flowers soakthe floral foam in a solution of water and OASIS®

Floralife® Flower Food. Tape together the floralfoam and bowl for security, bringing the AnchorTape under the bowl and back up to secure ontoitself.

Step 2 - Use the full depth of the floral foam byplacing the tallest flowers to the back. Cut theends of the Mitsumata Branches to a point foreasy insertion and add them to the back of thefloral foam. Molucella and Gladioli are groupedaround the Mitsumata Branches with MidelinoSticks looped to form curved side placements.Then use Aspidistra and Palm at the base of thefloral foam to give a good outline shape.

Step 3 - Place open Lily heads in the centre ofthe floral foam to create a focal area, using thebuds around the outline. Make sure all stems arefirmly pushed into the floral foam. RecessAnastasia blooms between the Lilies and fill inwith Finland Moss to cover the floral foam. Addgreen and white Midelino Sticks to give swirlingmovement to the front of the design. Top up thebowl with water once in situ.

Melanie Garbutt has a passion – it’sfloristry of course. So when she openedher own flower shop twelve years ago inUpton, near Pontefract, it was only fittingthat the business was called PassionFlowers, because the passion hasremained and even after twenty years asa florist she is still having a love affairwith flowers.

Melanie started on a youth training scheme(YTS) in a local flower shop straight fromschool, and learnt her craft both at theworkbench and at a local college.

Melanie prefers to have a small shop whereshe takes time to listen to her customers’needs, giving individual attention, and thenweaves creative stories with her flowers tocomplement the occasion. More thananything else Melanie feels most at home inher shop where she says, “I love the cutand thrust of a flower shop, thinking onyour feet, and adapting styles to what thecustomer wants.”

Melanie calls herself a ‘down to earth’ basicflorist, yet only the most creative florists winthe awards and prizes that she has won infloristry competitions. Her most recentsuccess was a Gold Medal and Best inShow at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show,and over the years she has won Best inShow and first prize in the wedding designclass at Harrogate Flower Show manytimes.

THEAGE OF EleganceFashionable Candelabras are the

Step 1Soak the OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam in asolution of water and OASIS® Floralife®

Flower Food. Make a decorative wiregarland around the four lower candleholdersby curling silver Aluminium Wire. Make twolonger hanging Aluminium Wire garlands atopposite sides of the Candelabra.

Step 2Twirl apple green Flat Aluminium Wire downthe main candlestick in an attractive style.Secure the Glass Test Tubes firmly withBullion Wire and weave Bear Grass throughthe Aluminium Wire garland. Use OASIS® FixAdhesive Tack to secure the Candle Cup tothe central candleholder and anchor the floralfoam in place with Pot Tape.

Step 3Add a delicate collar of Coral Fern and theninsert Phalaenopsis Orchids into the floral foamin a pleasing pattern. Fill in with more CoralFern and Amaranthus. Fill the Glass Test Tubeswith water and then add the Viburnum andPhalaenopsis Orchids to them. Swirl Callasaround the design inserting the stems into thefloral foam or water filled Glass Test Tubes,secure the heads in place with Bullion Wire.Finally add four Church Candles into thecandleholders.

• Slit the Lilies open and remove the stamens. Build up layers of Lily petals around the central Rose. Tape Parafilm around the base of each of the opened out Lily petals as they are placed around the Rose, then pull the Parafilm tighter a second time to stop the Lily breaking and to hold it firmly in place.

• Tape down over the ends of the Lily petals to keep the moisture in.• As the Lily petals build up it may be necessary to glue in place.
