Day 8 ­ Mâcon & Cluny ­ Horses, an abbey & moreYour riverboat arrives in Mâcon on the Saône River thismorning, for exploration in Cluny. During the reign ofCharlemagne (742 - 814), monastic influences inspired agreat revival in art, education and culture; today you'llvisit one of the great monasteries of the period when youtour the great Benedictine Abbey of Cluny. Founded in910, it was at the center of this major monastic reformmovement and was also the largest Christian building inthe world until the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica inRome. You'll also visit Haras National de Cluny (France'snational equestrian center), which dates back to the 19thcentury, to learn about its high-quality thoroughbredstallions. Vineyards, gently rolling hills, orchards, red-tiledfarmhouses, medieval cathedrals, the occasional villageto stop in... and historic country estates like the17th­century Château de Cormatin, which you'll exploreon a visit today.
