As the Chamber’s executive director, I’vehad the pleasure of meeting a lot of peoplewho are uncommonly committed tomaking Fremont a better place to work andlive. Universally, I see a community of
friendly, generous peoplewho welcome newcomers.
At the Chamber, we feel anobligation to serve as both aconvener and as a catalystthat enables the communityto achieve its goals. We’refortunate to have more than600 members and morethan 1,100 activeindividuals who recognize

Though there is never a shortage of workto be done, the Chamber focuses on issuesthat support the free enterprise system, that

As summer drew to its end in1856, seven land speculatorsfinalized their plans to build anew town alongthe banks of the
Platte River where pioneershad been making the difficulttrek west across Nebraska.Land was claimed for the townthey would call Fremont, naming it for the “pathfinderand famous explorer, GeneralJohn C. Fremont,” who hadexplored the region.
For them, this location wasspecial because of the fertileflat land between the shallowPlatte River to the south andthe meandering Elkhorn Riverto the north. They also had a hunch thetranscontinental railroad would follow the“Great Platte River Road” west, and theywere right. Their vision soon became areality and by 1906 three major railroadshad tracks though the city. With therailroads came people. And industry.
The population exploded from less than1,200 people in 1870 to more than 3,000 in1880, and then it more than doubled againto 6,747 in 1890. Things slowed a bit overthe next three decades, but by 1930Fremont’s population had swelled to morethan 11,400.
Raw materials were shipped in and finishedproducts shipped out in all directions to allparts of the country. In 1925, Fremont’s railsystem was boasting 76 railroad trains outof Fremont every 24 hours— 39 passenger,
33 freight and four mail. Fremont became amanufacturing center filled with foundries, broom factories, carriage works, cigarfactories, wagon makers, a sawmill andnumerous other industries.
Manufacturing was not the only economicpillar supporting Fremont’s growth. It wasalso a regional agricultural center. In 1890,
the Fremont Chamberof Commercepromoted Fremontas the “City whereagriculture andindustry meet.”Farmers formed a widetrade area and foodprocessors not onlybought local farmproducts but alsoprovided jobs for areacitizens. Today,Fremont has over 130agricultural-relatedbusinesses and
remains a vibrant and cutting-edge agri-business center.
As the city’s industrial sector continued togrow, Fremont needed services to meet theneeds of its residents. Some of Fremont’sfirst businesses are still operating andserving the community today. Stage linesstarted in 1859, a telegraph was built in1860 and Fremont became the county seatof Dodge County in 1860. First opened in1866, Fremont National Bank is stilloperating today. The Fremont Tribune
published their first issue onJuly 24, 1868, and itcontinues to be Fremont’sonly local daily paper.
During the 1880s, a wave ofprosperity in Fremont’sdowntown area sproutedbeautiful brick buildings usedfor stores and hotels. Thehistoric area is still bustlingwith activity today and ishome to restaurants, boutiques, retail and antiquestores. After undergoing amulti-million-dollarrenovation, the downtown
area is readying itself for anothergeneration of shoppers.
Like today, the town’s early foundersrecognized the importance of preparingstudents for jobs and for futuredevelopment. As a result, the first schoolopened in 1858, just two years after thetown was platted.
In 1884, Fremont became a college town. The school originated as Fremont NormalSchool, then changed to Fremont Collegeand later Midland Lutheran College. TodayMidland University is a growing residentialliberal arts college that prides itself on itspersonalized approach to preparing students.
Many travelers saw the promise in Fremontand made it their journey’s destinationrather than a place they’d planned to travelthrough. Beginning in 1846, pioneersnumbering in the tens of thousands passedthrough this area on westward treks thatoften had Utah, California or Oregon as

their goal. The site of the Fremont’sBarnard Park was once a camp forMormons seeking a place of rest along theMormon Trail.
The Lincoln Highway, America’s MainStreet, was the first paved coast-to-coasthighway and passed through Fremont. Now known as US Highway 30, many ofthe historical markers are still in place andthree blocks of the original brick are stilltraveled thru town.
Early Fremont settlers can best bedescribed as dreamers and doers; in today’sresidents we still see traces of those traits. We are dedicated to education, we are acollege town, we have a strongmanufacturing and transportation sectorand agriculture remains at the center of adiversified food and fuel economy that isstill growing and thriving.
Fremont is at the frontier of discovery andaccepting new pathfinders with openarms. Join us.
