Fremantle Street Arts2015

Welcome to the

FestivalWith artists from Cuba, Japan, UK, Italy, New Zealand , France, USA, Spain and our own backyard, this is undoubtedly the most comprehensive program of street theatre, busking and comedy we’ve presented.

For three full days, be amused, astounded and amazed as the streets of Fremantle transform into a multitude of stages for your entertainment.

This year, the City is proud to partner with the Tasmanian International Arts Festival and the Castlemaine State Festival to present El Son Entero from Cuba. One of a range of exciting new ventures as Fremantle’s renaissance into ‘the place to be’ continues.

The Festival provides the perfect backdrop to explore the Port City, take in the well-known landmarks and discover something new, different and distinctly Fremantle.

If you haven’t been ‘port side’ since last year’s Festival you might notice a few changes, with more than forty new local businesses opening in that time.

From a packed program of high quality street performance, bustling restaurants, fine hand-crafted beer and coffee, boutique retail and a range of new offerings all over Fremantle, why would you be anywhere else this Easter?

Come along and support our entertainers, our entrepreneurs and your city and enjoy all that is old and new this Festival season.

See you on the streets of Freo!

Dr Brad Pettitt FREMANTLE MAYOR

Welcome to the 2015 Fremantle Street Arts Festival.

First held in 1999, the Festival has grown from a grassroots busking event to become a popular annual feature on Western Australia’s events calendar, attended by more than 100,000 people.

The Festival will see the streets of Fremantle transformed into a series of performance sites featuring theatre, comedy, circus and busking when more than 20 local, national and international street performers take over the port city.

This year’s program includes a variety of acts from countries as far as Cuba, the Netherlands, the UK, USA, Japan and France. Waterbombs from the USA will deliver an interactive water balloon show featuring comedy, flying water balloons and loud opera music; while El Son Entero from Cuba will feature some of the best of Cuban dance music.

The Fremantle Street Arts Festival is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia.

The State Government has a strategy in place to increase the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020, and events play an integral role in achieving this goal.

Not only do events attract visitors, they also provide a boost to the economy, add vibrancy to a destination and help raise the profile of the State through valuable media exposure.

I hope everyone enjoys the Festival and takes time to explore historic Fremantle.

Dr Kim Hames DEPUTY PREMIER MINISTER FOR TOURISM

YOUR GUIDEto the Fremantle Street Arts Festival program

BuskersIt takes a special kind of artist to entertain crowds on the streets and many of our performers have travelled across the globe to perform for you in Fremantle. If you’ve enjoyed their performance, put some money in the hat, this is how they make their living.

RovingThese performers aren’t static, you’ll see them pop up in places all around Fremantle during the Festival. We’ve given you a starting point; see if you can catch them along the way.

MusicThere’s nothing better than the sounds of live music filling the open air during the Festival. Check out this year’s musical acts, be they comedy, folk or international.

ActivityDon’t just watch, do. Get involved in a number of fun and interactive activities that will be taking place around Fremantle throughout the Festival.

Ticketed showWhile most of the Festival action takes place on the streets, there are selected events which take you deeper into the performances at venues around Fremantle.

PasajeSaturday 4 April, 7pmFremantle Arts Centre, Inner courtyardPasaje (Passage) is an extraordinarily evocative bi-lingual journey into Cuban cultural history told through music, story, dance and film with a live performance by the outstanding traditional Cuban band El Son Entero. Touring Australia in their  first ever shows outside Cuba, the band will be accompanied by a captivating montage of rare footage from the archives of Cuba’s oldest recording company, EGREM.

Popular Cuban musical styles such as son, bolero, cha cha, chanqui and trova are explored from their historical origins in Spanish colonialism and African slavery, to their current global popularity. Alternatively narrated in English and Spanish, Pasaje offers audiences a unique insight into a complex, often controversial and richly layered Caribbean culture — a cultural history that is rarely seen or heard on these shores.

El Son Entero, from Camaguey in central Cuba, are a classically trained and deeply passionate group of exceptional musicians. With tightly woven string rhythms, full Afro-Cuban percussion, blistering trumpet and tight vocal harmonies, they inhabit their band name - they are ‘the full sound’.
