FHW – President’s Remarks.

Our club is 35 years old! Established in 1983, Freestate is celebrating our 35th

year, and we received our

banner and certificate from Mike Green, Atlantic Region Director, in August.

We had a couple group walks since our last newsletter. On July 22nd

we had 8 walkers and Melissa’s

dog walk at the Brookside Gardens. It had rained heavily the day before, but turned out to be a really

nice day to walk. It was real hot for our August club meeting, so instead of a group walk, we had our

meeting outside with pizza and cookies. Keeping with the outdoor theme, we had a group walk of

Kinder Farm Park and picnic on August 26th,,

however I was not able to attend this event.

Our next scheduled event is October 6th

at Darnall's Chance House Museum in Upper Marlboro.

This is a chance to “Get your U” for the A-Z program. You’ll also have a chance to tour the museum

with a docent present. In addition to the museum, we were also contacted by the town historian who

would like to pass on local history. So in addition to getting a “U”, you can learn some local history as

well. I’m looking forward to a nice event.

We will also be back in Savage at the church for our New Years’ events. More details to come, but as

usual we’ll need a lot of help over both days.

The next MVA meeting will be on September 22nd

at Catonsville. I’ll pass on the news from that group

to our October meeting and next newsletter.

Every club is encouraged to host, although it doesn’t have to be staffed, an OptOutside event on Black

Friday, November 23rd

. Freestate’s OptOutside event will be our Frederick YRE for anyone staying in

the area and not shopping or working.

In 2019, we have events sanctioned for the Montpelier Herb, Tea and Arts festival on April 27th and

Kinder Farm Park for June 1st. Also please mark your calendars for January 20th

for our celebration

Kudos to Bob Lumbert for renewing our YREs for next year. This year we had some new changes and

challenges for Bob. We will not be renewing the Indianhead bike event for next yea; the Annapolis

Ambers are taking it over. Tom and Sue DeHetre will continue to run it along with our walk event

there. Thanks to Charlotte Lord for taking over our Ocean City event and finding a new permanent start

point. Once the hotel closes for the season, the walkbox will move to the convention center where the

walk will start. No more need to work around the hotel’s schedule and driving to the walk start.

Bob made some edits to the Wheaton stamps for next year, but I don’t think any other POC submitted

changes. We do have a month or so (until the stamps are cut by the AVA) to make changes. You can fit

about 18 characters per line, so have some flexibility to define the event on the top line, with the town

and state on the bottom line. We will get new handles again this year for the YREs, but starting next

year we will reuse the previous year’s handles. More to come later on this. Thanks again Bob for all

your work in getting our YREs sanctioned.

For those of you entered in the 401(K) program, I hope you are enjoying the Tour of Italy. The first

batch of t-shirts were shipped, but there’s still time to complete the challenge. Remember this is an

activity/walking challenge and not a volksmarching challenge, so it’s open to anyone and tracks your

daily steps.

We are in the process of reviewing our club by-laws to update them. We welcome input from any club

member. A copy of the by-laws is on the Freestate website

(http://www.mdvolks.org/freestate/ ). Per the current by-laws our next opportunity is January when we

can make formal changes, so please contact Bob Lumbert, Phill Wilder or Tom Mosely with any

specific inputs you have.

We are also still looking for an events committee chair and checkpoint coordinator. We cover events in

our club meeting, but have limited time for discussion. Each event POCs now does a little more

coordination for checkpoint supplies, getting them from those of us who are storing club assets.

We incite you to join us for our Club Business meetings at 7:30PM on the second Thursday of each

month at the Savage United Methodist Church Faith Center, where you can have a say in what we do,

and enjoy some good refreshments. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to

help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in

their positions for years, and many help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a

month (if that long) and we’d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club.

Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers,

without whom we couldn’t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just

walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it’s an educational side trip or the

chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness

and Friendship and welcomes everyone.

This year we are collecting new or lightly used warm adult clothing for a local charity.

Clean out your closets and recycle. Anyone wanting to proof one of the New Year’s trails

contact Bill Hassel (email wahasse1798@verizon) and request. We do not planning a

Workers Walk this year.

CLUB PICNIC – The club picnic and group walk of Kinder Farm Park was held on August

26th. Total of 15 people attended and “old timers” Bill Brabant and Ann Hensler came and

visited. Ann just had a knee replacement and is in training to get back on the trail.

Weather was beautiful, the food worked, everyone brought their own picnic, drinks and

cupcakes provided by the Club. You all missed an afternoon in “Pasadena” and walking the

shady trail in KFP.

PUBLICITY – I have the brochures and business cards to promote our sport if you would

pick them up I have at all Freestate meetings and walk events. Cards and our brochures

can be posted on work bulletin boards, park offices, libraries, Dr.’s offices, Panera’s

Community boards, etc. to promote our sport. If you have limited time and can’t volunteer

at events or other special jobs with the club this is a way to introduce coworkers, family

members or your boss to a whole new way to enjoy leisure time. I believe we have a great

sport to offer everyone and they are waiting for you to give them the information.

“You’re on your Own. And You know what you know. And You are the one who’ll decide

where to Go ...” – Dr. Seuss –Come on out and enjoy the many walk events in our area.

MEMBERSHIP – The 25 renewals packages were mailed to members that had a 6/30/18

renewal date and some Lifetime members to update their information. We received

membership updates and renewals from 38 members. Those that have not responded

were also sent an email message to renew. Members not renewing by September 15th will

be removed from the email group and club data base.

CONGRATULATIONS – Club Members and friends celebrating their walking

accomplishments with several of our members appearing in The American Wanderer (TAW): Craig Goerling 50 Events; Genevieve Goerling 50 events; Jeff Giddings 575 events; Darrell Neily 750 Events; Robert Lumbert 5500 Events and Marie Kupres 22,000-

km. Keep sending in your books. AVA: America’s Walking Club.

Times: Start time anytime between 9 AM and Noon, Finish by 3:30 PM

Trail Description/ Distance: Explore historic Upper Marlboro – originally settled in

1695. Visit the gravesite of William Beanes and learn about his connection to “The Star-

Spangled Banner”. Both the 5 and 10 KM trails consist mainly of city streets, park paths,

a boardwalk around Schoolhouse Pond, and some gravel and natural surfaces. For

volunteer and meet other walkers in the area. Special programs: Walking the USA A to Z,

Reminders: Road Trips

October 19-21, 2018 - The Keystone Volkssport Association and Pennsylvania Clubs are

sponsoring “Fall Foliage Festival of Walks” on Friday-Sunday, October 19-21, 2018. The

Annapolis Amblers are going up for their Fall trip to support the events so Freestate

members interested can view the information on the ava.org website. Discount Hotel

rates available at the Super 8, State College. Hurry rooms are going fast. A Pizza Party

on Friday and a Meet and Greet on Saturday but with prepaid reservations only. Check

AVA website, Events, Pennsylvania, and Traditional Events

October 27 and 28th in Rehoboth Beach, DE –– Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth,

Delaware. Start was moved this year and not at the old hotel. Now at a private rented

house but still the great walks and get together after the walk events. Join them at:

Previous hotel rates have increased so look now for another place to stay or pay new

rates. THEME: Sea Witch Festival with parades, activities, and Treasure Hunt. SPECIAL

With the Trees, Water Towers, and Walking the USA A to-Z and Boardwalks.

FREESTATE HAPPY WANDERERS “Turk” Roger Turczynski passed away on August 4, 2018 in Cleveland, Ohio while attending a National Baseball Card Convention. Card collecting was a passion of his after his many years of Volksmarch-ing. He was one of the founders of the Freestate Happy Wanderers, AVA-190 and a patriarch of the club. He and his friend Carl Baranski were among the first volksmarchers to walk in all 50 states long before YRE’s. As you might know Turk had a heart attack on a New Jersey volksmarch and was quoted as saying “stamp my books before you take me to the hospital”. He waited almost a year for a heart transplant and was kept alive on an experimental heart and lung machine. He is probably one of the longest living survivors of a heart transplant. Gods Speed and thank you for all
