From the Principal’s Desk …

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks of teaching, learning and extra-curricular activities at Freemans Reach PS.

Our students have been working incredibly hard in the Word Mania challenge with three of our year groups placing 3rd in the first round of competition.

Last week, our Stage 3 students went on their much-anticipated camp to Canberra and the Snow. I checked in every day to see how our kids were going and every time I called, I heard how safe, respectful and responsible our students were whilst having the best time. They participated in a day of learning at Parliament House on their first day of the trip. On day 2, they had fun in the snow at Blue Cow Mountain and on their 3rd day, they visited the Australian War Memorial and Questacon. Thank you Mr Baxter, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Shuster for your time in helping our students make so many memories.

This week is SASS Staff Recognition week. Our teachers put on a morning tea today to acknowledge and celebrate the important role our SASS staff provide in our school every day. Without our office staff, SLSO’s, GA and cleaning staff, our school would not be able to provide the many crucial roles and wonderful opportunities for our students.

Lastly, I would like to thank the staff and community of Freemans Reach PS for their support and kindness over the last few weeks whilst I have relieved in this principal role. I have enjoyed this opportunity and I have learnt so much and appreciated the incredible work principals put into our schools. I look forward to returning to teaching 5/6A next week. Mrs Walker had extended her initial time off to care for her mum who was involved in a serious car accident, she will return to work next Monday.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

Our peer support program is now half way through with our Year 6 students successfully leading the Health program Living Positively each week for 30-minute lessons. The students have participated in activities focused on teamwork, kindness, curiosity, optimism and learning our strengths. Over the next couple of weeks, they will look at positive self-talk and perseverance.

BLUE MOUNTAINS NEPEAN DANCE FESTIVAL

Our three dance groups will be performing at the Blue Mountains Nepean Dance Festival next Thursday, 5th September at 7:30pm.

Tickets are now available at www.jspac.com.au or by calling the centre box office on 4723 7600.

SCHOOL SPORT AND FITNESS

During last term, it became evident that a large number of students were opting out of physical education: sport and fitness programs. These programs are vital and mandatory components of our syllabus documents. Every child in NSW schools is expected to participate in 150 minutes of planned physical activity per week. We cover this time through our sport and fitness programs.

If your child is unable to participate in physical education programs for a medical reason, then a note needs to be supplied to the class teacher stating this information. If a note is not supplied then students will be expected to participate in the activities.

Please remember that staff can always make adjustments to activities. For example, if running is an issue then static activities could be included etc.

ATTENDANCE DATA

Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their potential, and increase their career and life options. Schools, in partnerships with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff, as part of their duty of care, record and monitor part and whole day absences. Schools, in providing a caring teaching and learning environment, which addresses the learning and support needs of students, including those with additional learning and support needs or complex health conditions, foster students’ sense of wellbeing and belonging to the school community.

It should be noted, that whilst we look at a 90% attendance rate as good, if this is averaged across a 10-year period of schooling, then the student would have missed an entire year of education. Across 13 years (K-12) this would be even more. That is a lot of missed learning time.

CYBER SAFETY AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Every year we come across situations that involve the use of social media and the responsibilities that are required of individuals in this area. Last week, our local Youth Liaison Officer delivered age appropriate Cyber Safety presentations to our students.

On Thursday 19th September, we have organised a parent presentation at 5pm in our school hall. We hope you can attend this informative presentation.

At the end of this newsletter, we have also included several social media fact sheets that may help you as parents.

VISIBLE LEARNING

One of the major components of our Visible Learning journey is the understanding of Learning Dispositions and how they help us to be effective learners. The next disposition we want to share with you is I am Resourceful. This poster is displayed in each learning space and teachers have conducted specific discussions around how being resourceful can make us better learners. You may like to have similar discussions on how being resourceful can be implemented in the home environment.

P&C UNIFORM SHOP VOLUNTEER

Our P&C are looking for volunteers to take over the running of the uniform shop. If you are interested in this position, please come in and see Joanne or Charlene on Wednesday mornings in the P&C room. The P&C uniform shop is open from 8:15am each Wednesday.

PLANNING for 2020

Term 3 is half way through and with that comes planning for 2020. Wow, already thinking about next year. We need to send in our anticipated numbers for 2020. So, if you have a child starting school next year or know someone who does, we need to hear from you and start the enrolment process. Please take time to contact the school office this week so we can add your child’s name to our list. Please pass this information to others who may not receive this newsletter.

UNIFORM SHOP

Uniform Shop Winter Warmers - Now Available! The P&C would like to offer our families some winter warmer options available for sale from Wednesday 19th June 2019. These winter options can only be worn during Terms 2 & 3.

Bottle Green Beanie - $8 Bottle Green Scarf - $8

Also a friendly reminder to families that FRPS has a no hat, play in the shade policy; therefore, it is essential to also have a school hat available to wear once the fresh morning air warms up. The beanie does not replace the school hat.

The Uniform Shop is open from 8.15am until 9.00am every Wednesday morning.

SRC NEWS

This term our SRC have organised a money trail competition.

The students decided that they would like to organise a silver coin trail to raise money for our own school to use on playground resources.

Students have been asked to start collecting silver coins at home. On Friday 20th September 2010, these coins will then be brought into school and classes will compete to make the longest trail. The day will also accommodate a Sport Mufti theme.

So… start collecting that loose change!

CANBERRA EXCURSION STAGE 3

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian government has contributed funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Parents, please note this amount was factored into the original cost to attend the Canberra Camp.

NSWPSSA REPRESENTATIVE

In our last newsletter, we congratulated Amy for her selection to compete at the School Sport Australia Championship in Darwin for High Jump!

Amy is selling tickets as a fundraiser to cover the cost of being a member on the NSWPSSA Athletics Team. If you would like to purchase a ticket, these can be purchased from the school office. Tickets are $5 each.
