Architecture and perceptionBy using our sences, we identify the place and formulate a valuation of the space.Sound and borderSound as a definition of the spatial border, in terms of auditory and psychology.Site investigatedPhenomenology thus means examining a phonomenon of consciousness in its own dimension of consciousness. Mapping the sound borderThe aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity. Translation from map to architectureThe architecture of music, the structure of aural phenomena might have a graphic parallel in architectural notations; plans sections, axonometric, etc. ConclusionThe ambition of my project is to map the invisible sound borders and translate them into architecture, which origins from the site, linking deeply in a metaphysical and poetic way.

Living + Garden Hamburg,Germany 2010.2-2010.6 class assinment, worked independently SIZE: 13271 m² Tutor: Olv

AMBITIONTo combine the western dwelling and Chinese garden together, creating a new kind of housing typology.

CONCEPTAnalyse and conclude the main characters of Chinese garden, which are 1. Imitate the nature, 2. Cavalier perspective and 3.the building and the garden interactive with each other. Then try to use these characters as the principle in design process.

Since Hamburg is a coastal city, the idea is to imitate the form of wave and generate the shape of gardens which spread around the whole building. There ia a big garden in the middle and 7 smaller gardens around, which are connected by a public route. When the location changes the perspective changes. Soften the boundary between build and the garden and they are somehow merge together.

DEPOSITORY BUILDING Maashaven,Rotterdam 2009.9-2010.1 class assinment, worked independently SIZE: 11734 m² Tutor: Aldo

EXISTING SITUATION:The site lies on the southern wharf of Maashaven, with a large amount of residential surrounding, and some silos of granaries and warehouses, which should be a landmark of this area and will be the new Urban Podium. The depository should be a supplementary to the future Urban Podium, because they are close to earch other. People who go to the new City Plaza will probably go pass the site.

CONTRADICTION:The site give me an impression of senescence and lacking in activity, beside, the neighborhood does not have a good reputation due to its high level of criminality. The biggest challenge of my design is how to activate the site, how to reponse to the existing situation.

STRATEGY:Activation------------Creat a city plaza to attract people to come to the building and bring some activity.Education------------The art exhibit should have some education function to the spectators, what I do is to attract people to go inside the building and stay there. I believe they will be imperceptibly influenced by the art exhibit.Materialization------Make the facade be similar to the landmark nearby, select some element of it and make it situable to my design.

ORIGINWinding across China, the Great Wall with rich connotations of historical culture, is the symbol of the spirit and civilization of the Chinese nation. The history of the Great Wall is half the history of China.

CONCEPT-the Great Wall of ChinaThe architecture dimension rises dramatically from low to high, just like China, a soaring dragon. China Pavilion, Religion Pavilion and the pavilion of Hong Kong, Macow and Taiwan are independent but with inner connections, which enable a consecutive route.

The three dimensions constitute an organic and harmonious whole.

The movement and force as a whole are emphasized by the ups and downs of the dimension.

The windows of the elevation are the imitations of the defencing wall.

Parts of the building are built on stilts, so as to imitate the city gate of the Great Wall.

base environment

CURREN SITUATIONThe site locates in Luhu Park, a historical central water-front si te. I t was a diff icult renovation project. Luming Restaurant used to be a traditional architecture with slope roof and chaos function arrangement. The goals of the renovation were to rationalize the function, expand the dining-hall and set ton an additional dormitory. STRATEGYExcavate the knoll at the north of the site, where would be the new dormitory linked to the main kitchen by an underground tunnel .

The constructions of the waterside restaurants were retained, the rest were all backout.

Define the space with walls and wooden screens.

Change the traditional style into the modern style, using glass curtain walls.

MY RESPONSIBILITYWorked as one of the main architect and in charge of the following things:

Complete design development after winning the bid, including the elevations design and landscape design.

Construction documents design phase, responsible for the drawing of elevations, sections and parts of the details.

Construction stage, stayed and worked in the site as long as half a year. In charge of the construction supervision and made necessary modification.

CURREN SITUATIONThe base locates in a natural valley, the library can be overlooked from the mountains on the both sides. So the fifth elevation of the library is very important. The centre plaza of the campus is close to south of the site, which is suitable for the main entrance.

CONTRADICTIONThere is a contradiction between the closed base and the openness of library.

STRATEGYWeaken the dimention of the library, adopt the superterranean strategy to enhance the transparency, set-back from the north, adopt various circuits and routes which allow for the potential that no visit to the library will be a repeat experience.

CONCEPT ANALYSISNowadays the era of knowledge-explosion is upon us, people are always perplexed when they are in the sea of books. They don't know how to choose the most useful information, just as they are in the labyrinth of knowledge.Libraries are the places where people learn by themselves and turn realization from confusion. This is a process of going through labyrinth.

CONCEPT-go through labyrinthsBreak up the whole dimention into parts with organic connection. Around the patio is the route where readers visit along and enjoy the plentiful space experience. It seems like a labyrinth at first glance. However, it is clear and in order. I try to evoke people's images of labyrinth so as to make the metaphor that the process of learning is the process of going through labyrinths.
