Letter from our Rector: Dear friends,

As we move towards a season of remembering in the church calendar, and particularly as we move towards Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday I am delighted that our village has raised sufficient funds to clean and do some minor repairs to our War Memorial. As you may well know the village War Memorial sits in the churchyard, and so, during our Remembrance Day Service on the 13th November (10.45am at St Mary's) we will re-dedicate our War Memorial, which will by then have been cleaned and minor works completed to the stonework.

Do come and join us for this important re-dedication if you can.

Every year when we come to our acts of Remembrance I am reminded of the words of George Santayana, later repeated by Churchill who said 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.'

Our War Memorial is so important to remember the sacrifice of those who fell during conflict for our freedom, but also to remind us to seek to avoid going to war, unless it is genuinely the only solution.

I want to thank John Hewitt for leading the project to restore the War Memorial and thank you to all who have generously given towards this very important project.

I hope to see many of you at St Marys' for our Remembrance Day Service and for the re-dedication of the War Memorial.

Many thanks and best wishes

David

FREELAND WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The WI enjoyed an evening with Indira Spice who cooked a Paneer Masala curry and Coconut rice which we were all able to taste. The aroma of the stone ground spices was amazing. We were even shown how to make Paneer Cheese. Indira tells us that on a recent trip to India she was horrified to find that Indian families are turning to convenience curries from packets!!!!! Indira lives in North Leigh and runs Indian cookery lessons for 2-4 people in her home. She also does Friday takeaway nights once a month where you can enjoy a delicious home cooked curry in your own home. See Indira's website: www.spiceindira.co.uk for more information.

Next month, on Monday 14th November at 8pm, in the Village Hall we will be concentrating on Paper Crafts, making Christmas Cards and Christmas decorations. New members are always welcome, more information can be obtained from our website http://Freelandwi.weebly.com/ or from Lorraine Pengilley 01993 881129.

RESTORATION OF FREELAND WAR MEMORIAL - UPDATE

The response and donations received from both individuals and groups from within and outside our village have been very generous. All donations received to date have been processed through the PCC.

Even though the grant from the War Memorials Trust will not be known until the very end of October, the quotation from the preferred stone masonry contractor has been accepted. The stone repairs and cleaning is expected to take two days and has been programmed to be carried out before the 1st November.

The Memorial will be re-dedicated by our Rector, David Tyler, as part of the Remembrance Day Service to be held at St Mary’s Church on Sunday 13th November. All are very welcome.

Further work that may be required to some of the weather-worn lettering and numerals will be the subject of a second grant application to the War Memorials Trust.

If you wish to make a donation this can be sent to John Hewitt, 121 Broadmarsh Lane, Freeland OX29 8QP. Please make cheques payable to St Mary the Virgin Freeland PCC. Gift Aid forms are available from John Hewitt. All donations will be processed through the PCC and will be placed in a restricted fund to only be used for the War Memorial. Any monies received, over and above the amount needed, will be placed in a contingency fund for future use towards the upkeep of the memorial.

The restoration of the War Memorial, the planting of the memorial trees, and the planting of snowdrops around the memorial trees by members of Freeland Gardening Club, will complete a fitting tribute to the men of our village who gave their lives in both world wars for our freedom.

Thank you John Hewitt

FREELAND CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

October 2016

The school’s Christian value this term is ‘Respect’ We have been delighted to welcome three new members

of staff this term to the school; Mrs McCarthy (teacher in Year 4/5), Miss Nixey (teacher in Year 1) and Miss Gilbert (TA in Year 4/5). We have had a great start to the year and are all looking forward to more exciting opportunities as the year progresses.

Big Talk / Big Write ‘You can’t write it, if you can’t talk about it!’ Big Write has been one of our new initiatives this year. Each week the children have a new talk topic to discuss throughout the week. This is discussed in assemblies, at playtime and at home with parents; we have also had some parents in for lunch to talk to groups of children. At the end of the week the children then produce a piece of writing based around the talk topic. Some of our talk topics have been: the best holiday you have ever had…, what if the oceans were sugary instead of salty?, talk about your favourite pop star/group. If any members of the community would like to spend half an hour with a group of children (and a teacher) please let the school know.

The Oxford Half Marathon School's Challenge Since September, 45 keen runners (and 5 not so keen teachers!) have been clocking up the miles in preparation for the School's challenge for the Oxford Half Marathon. The running club have met twice weekly and completed at least 2 miles a week, ready for the big day. On Sunday 9th October, once all of the Half Marathon runners (including several of our parents) had gone off for their 13.1 miles around Oxford, our group walked to the start line. With a warm up from Chico (does anyone remember Chico time?) we were off to complete our last mile to finish 13.1 miles all together. I am so incredibly proud of the children for showing determination, perseverance and resilience during this time, as well as respect and support for each other. It was great to see so many children (1/3 of the school) taking part in this event and seeing their faces as they ran through the streets of Oxford was fantastic. Well done Freeland!

WITNEY MUSIC SOCIETY Witney Music Society's next concert will be given by the renowned pianist Ashley Wass. In a programme featuring music based on the plays of Shakespeare, Ashley will be performing works - some well-known, some less so - by Beethoven, Liszt, Smetana and Prokofiev for what promises to be a memorable evening. The concert is at 7.30pm on Friday 11th November.

In December, the early music ensemble Piva presents '12 Days of Christmas: Music and Mayhem from Shakespeare's time'. Playing on more than thirty authentic instruments, Piva will perform a lively concert of seasonal music, washing away Victorian influences and taking the audience back to the origins of many familiar Christmas customs and carols. The concert is at 7.30pm on Friday 9th December.

Both concerts are at High Street Methodist Church, Witney. Tickets (full price £12, senior concessions £11, under 18 £1) will be available at the door from 7pm.

***************************************** A THANK YOU FROM TWO FREELAND GUIDES We are writing to you to thank everyone in the village who supported the fundraising for our Girlguiding UK Anglia Iceland trip.

While we were away, we spent three days in Reykjavik visiting the Viking sculpture, the Aurora Lights museum and Harpa Concert Hall. We also went on a three hour whale watching tour where we saw families of dolphins, puffins and Minke whales. We visited the Blue Lagoon hot springs where we were treated to silica mud face masks and fresh glacial water to cool us down. We spent three hours in the lagoon relaxing before heading to the lava hostel where we stayed two nights.

We travelled to Úlfljótsvatn Scout Centre where we spent the rest of the trip camping. While we were there we kayaked across Iceland’s largest lake and visited a troll cave, went on a hike to a waterfall and went pony trekking on Icelandic ponies. On site we volunteered by helping to fold away dry tents, tie up guy ropes and clear the pathways of weeds around the site. For doing this we received our volunteers work badge from the Scout Centre. We made friends with American Scouts, throughout the trip we had many campfires with them and taught them some of our campfire songs, talked about our cultural differences and swapped badges. They showed us some of their skits that they had created and taught us some of the songs they sing at their meetings.

The Golden Circle tour was also a highlight of the trip. We saw the North Atlantic Ridge and walked down the divide between the two plates and continents, watched the Strokkur geyser erupt over 20 metres into the air, as well as seeing an enormous waterfall called Gulfoss and making a stop off for ice cream and to visit some new-born calves.

Another amazing thing we did on the trip was when we climbed to the top of a glacier using crampons and ice axes. When we got to the top we could drink from the fresh glacial water flowing through the ice, however you had to lie on the ice to have a sip!

When our rucksacks were fit to burst, we departed home for England to see all our friends and family- and also to eat some vegetables!!

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY NEWS How can it be November already? These dark evenings may very well make you want to snuggle up with a book, next to the fire, and get lost in a good story.

To commemorate Remembrance Day, there will be a selection of children’s books by Michael Morpurgo in the Little Free Library, including his most famous book, War Horse, and the award-winning Private Peaceful. His books deal with issues of war, including courage, innocence, brutality, and of course, loss.

Morpurgo says “I write fiction, but fiction with roots in history, in the people who made our history, who fought and often died in our wars. They were real people…often living and suffering through great and terrible dangers, facing these with unimaginable courage.”

Thank you once again to everyone that uses the book exchange; all the books belong to you, and you are welcome to take as many as you like, with no need to return them.

To keep up to date with everything, please visit our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/FreelandLittleFreeLibrary/

*************************************** THE UNACCEPTED FREELAND RAMBLERS 4th Sept 2016 We are not sure from where our good fortune stems, it could be the auspices of this very publication but we have had, so far, a history of good weather on every first Sunday of the month since our ramblings started, this particular Sunday was no exception. It was glorious! Three dogs and nine ramblers were dictated to/directed by Mr. P. Anting as the logistics team staged a walk-out insisting on better working conditions. Thankfully, Shep the dog came to the rescue and sniffed out a pretty route along side the river bank.

Unsurprisingly, we have yet another complaint from a Mrs Trellis regarding the six lane motorway mentioned in last month’s edition. This was of course an error, it should have read “an elevated railway viaduct across the playing field to link the H20 rail route to the new metropolis of Church Freeland Eynsham Hanborough, as it will be known”. I hope this clears up any minor misunderstandings. Misquote of the month; ‘Reality continues to ruin my life’ Watterson.

Newcomers are always welcome. The next exciting event: The Oxfordshire Yeoman, 9.30am, Sunday 6th November, 2016.

1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP

This month’s report begins with a special tribute to Gwilym Mason, who - in scouting terms – has “gone home”, having sadly passed away at the end of the summer, following a long battle with cancer. A volunteer in Oxfordshire for over 30 years, mainly with the 1st Hanborough Freeland Scout Group, Gwilym undertook a variety of roles and was also District Commissioner for West Oxon for 5 years. Much loved and respected, his memorial service on 9th September was a moving and celebratory occasion, attended by both the County and District Commissioners. Thank you, Gwilym, for all you did for Scouting and our youngsters, you will be sorely missed.

The autumn term has got off to a busy start, with all sections running at full capacity. We currently have 23 Beavers, who have been playing non-stop cricket, the ‘Wide’ game in Freeland Wood, tracking (and getting lost!) around Pinsley Wood and designing badges for entry into the Oxonjam County Camp 2017 competition. A dozen Beavers attended the County 30th Birthday Fun Day in Oxford, a very well organised event with a host of activities. Future planned meetings include bell ringing, a fire station visit and working towards their Cooking and Experiment badges. With two of our leaders not always able to make every meeting, Beavers urgently need more parent helpers in order to run every week. One meeting has already had to be cancelled, so please assist us if you can, if only on an occasional basis.

Cub numbers have risen to 33 and we welcome Rich Fuller (Cub name ‘Hathi’) as a much needed new helper. Activities so far have included a night hike, a nature hunt in Freeland Wood, a good old fashioned conker fight and working towards their Navigator badge. The section raised an impressive £292 for Shelterbox, which has already gone towards an emergency box for Haiti, so well done everyone for raising urgent funds for such a worthy cause! A visit to the Air Museum at RAF Cosford is planned for later in the term.

Our 37 Scouts have spent a lot of time outside, working on knife, axe and saw skills and competing in their own conker competition. In October, a team took part in the annual County Patrol Camping Weekend at Horley, near Banbury and an indoor camp weekend is planned for the end of November in Chalfont St Peter. Scouts will be focusing on award work over the next few weeks, in the run up to Christmas.

Explorers bade farewell to Mark Monkhouse (aka Craig) in September as he turned 18 and marked the occasion by throwing a Star Wars themed fancy dress birthday party! Other activities have included Dodge Ball and other indoor games and learning all about owls. Thanks go to parent Julian Soanes, who has recently joined as a new Assistant Explorer Leader. Julian will be unable to attend every week, owing to work commitments, so once again we appeal for your help. Continued………

FREELAND FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS The 200 Club October draw has been delayed to allow new members to join up. The draw will be listed in the December Grapevine.

Freeland’s First team drew their next home game against Marston Saints 2-2. The goal scorers were Tom McCudden and Liam Harris. The Firsts then got back to winning ways in the Cup against Launton winning 1-2, this time with goals from Daniel Taylor and new signing Craig Mays. The good run of late then continued against the same Launton side in the league. Winning 0-5, goals from Daniel Taylor 3, Tom McCudden 1, and Simon Calley 1. The only defeat coming this week against a very strong Heyford Athletic side losing 0-3. The next game for the First team is going to be in the Senior Cup against Woodstock Town at home.

Freeland Reserves have found themselves with few fixtures this month with their only game, against Chalgrove away, with a 2-0 victory, goals from Jay Jay and Tom Gerken. The next fixtures see them away to local rivals Eynsham Reserves, followed by two home games to Garsington Reserves and Eynsham Reserves.

Freeland Football Club will be hosting the annual Race Night which will be held in the Oxfordshire Yeoman on Saturday 12th November, this will be to raise money for the club to help progress throughout the season. It would be great to see many faces from the village. Everyone is welcome. More details can be found on the Posters in the Yeoman and on the village notice boards.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL - LISA’S NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS HELD ON 19th SEPTEMBER and 17th OCTOBER 2016 Councillors welcomed Liam Walker to the October meeting. Liam had been

successfully nominated to be the Conservative Party County Council Candidate for the Minster and Hanborough Division in next year’s elections to replace current County Councillor, Louise Chapman, who will not be standing for re-election.

North Eynsham proposals There has been an Expresssion of Interest put forward by WODC for a development of up to 2,200 homes with a science park and a Park and Ride site to the North of Eynsham by the A40. A new doctor’s surgery and schools have also been included in the plans. The Chairman of Eynsham Parish Council came and spoke at our September meeting to give their Council’s view of the proposals. They have ongoing concerns about the local infrastructure being able to support that many homes plus the impact on traffic, something that was echoed by Freeland Parish Councillors. No official planning application has yet been made and residents will be updated as and when more details are known.

New path across playing field A new path is being created to run from the village hall car park down the side of the playing field to the Pigeon House Lane gate. Daffodil bulbs have been planted in the soil area next to the path and grass and wildflower seeds have also been sown. Please avoid walking on this area to give the plants a chance to grow. Thanks. The Parish Council would like to offer their thanks to Robert Crocker for carrying out this work.

Play area improvements Some of you may have noticed that the play park railings have now been painted and some de-rusting and painting work has been carried out on the junior slide. Our thanks go to Dave Hollis and Tim Webster for carrying out this work. Some minor maintenance work has also been identified in our annual inspection of the play equipment, and this includes things like replacing the chains on the swings and the rope on the climber. This work is due to be carried out shortly.

Cuts to number 11 bus service Some residents have been in touch with the Parish Council to express their concerns over the recent cuts to the number 11 bus timetable that serves Freeland. The Parish Council have written to Stagecoach to pass on these concerns and to make a request to re-route the 233 service through Freeland during the day when the number 11 does not pass through. At the time of writing I am waiting on a response from Stagecoach. However, for those without access to suitable public transport, Oxfordshire County Council have set up the Comet service (see below) which is a new bookable transport service across Oxfordshire.

Comet Public Transport Service If you are an Oxfordshire resident and don’t have access to suitable public transport, the Oxfordshire Comet can transport you from your door to any destination in Oxfordshire for a small charge. It is also open to wheelchair users and those with mobility issues. Continued…………...

Two new memorial benches Following two very generous donations, one from the Freeland Teddy Girls and one from the Freeland Women’s Institute, I am pleased to confirm that two new memorial benches have been ordered. One will be placed near the bus stop by the entrance to Busby Close, and the other will be installed in the new Garden of Remembrance. The Parish Council would like to offer their sincere thanks to members of the Teddy Girls and WI for all their efforts in raising these funds. Your ongoing support to the village is very much appreciated.

Garden of Remembrance Quotes have been received and approved for the hard landscaping work in the Garden of Remembrance. This work will be carried out over the coming months.

A MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF THE GRAPEVINE DELIVERERS As well as shimmying between cars parked in driveways, the deliverers often have to negotiate around plant containers, building materials, skips, waste disposal boxes, wheelie bins, scooters, bikes, motorbikes, etc. that are left on residents' driveways and paths. As there are no street lights, and with the clocks having changed, it can be very hazardous! With cars occasionally parked on pavements the deliverers then have to walk out on the road - what must it be like for residents with pushchairs or in wheelchairs/mobility scooters? Please spare a thought for the deliverers, the Posties and other Freeland residents.

AFTER-SCHOOL CLUB LEADER / COORDINATOR We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and innovative individual to help establish our new after-school club at Freeland Pre-school for children aged 4-11. The role will commence January 2017, with some planning meetings and preparation during Term 2. Initially the club will open Monday to Wednesdays with working hours from 3pm-6.15pm (term time). As this is a new venture the role provides an opportunity for the right candidate to inject their own ideas and

potentially expand the club across the week.

The role would involve leading a small team of staff so leadership experience is preferable. A childcare qualification is desirable but not essential.

This is initially a temporary post but has the potential to become a permanent position for the right person. Competitive rates of pay offered. If applicable, own children can attend free of charge. We encourage candidates to visit the setting prior to application (Contact: 01993 882945).

POPPY APPEAL 2016

This year’s door to door collections will take place from Saturday 29h October to Saturday 12th November. Thank you in advance to everyone that supports this cause so generously and of course to the collectors who give their time and support.
