Derek Aaron Derek is performing in his third SCT summer revue after his debut in SCT’s Welcome to the ‘60s! Derek is a teacher at Carbon Hill Elementary School in Carbon Hill, AL, where he teaches math, reading and art. Derek has performed in several other musicals including My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, Grease, and Little Shop of Horrors, and Derek has performed for 8 years in the outdoor repertoire musical production of Incident at Looney’s Tavern in Double Springs, AL. He also appeared in Salome at UAB and Dracula and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at Looney’s Tavern. Derek thanks his Jasper and Starkville families and dedicates his performance tonight to his parents, especially to his father who served in the Air Force from 1942-1972 and served in WWII, the Korean War and 4 terms in Vietnam. Interestingly, Derek’s father met Bob Hope during one of Hope’s USO tours in Korea. His father had his picture made with Hope because Derek’s father resembled Bing Crosby. Matt Crane Matt is back on stage for his second summer musical revue at SCT. Since joining the SCT family last summer during 10 out of 10: The Perfect Score, Matt has been seen in Company, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged] and working backstage crew for the nationally-recognized Catfish Moon. Matt is a junior at Mississippi State University working on a degree in communication with an emphasis in theatre. “Thanks to everyone in the cast and crew for another great summer and another great show. Thanks to my friends and family for sticking by me. To my brother, Jay, I am overwhelmed with pride for what you doing for this country. I love you. Come back safely.” Debbie Haynes Dunaway Originally from Gallatin, TN, Debbie is honored to celebrate her 19th year with SCT and to be a part of this incredible company. You may have seen her in past SCT musical revues and shows, most recently Company. She thanks Pattye, Alison, Carole and Jonette for their time and patience and also the entire crew for all of the little things they do to make this show so special. Thanks, also, to Jansen for his valiant efforts to keep her looking young! And a very special thank-you goes to Greg, Meghan and Matthew for their love and support.

About the Cast

Page 7: freedom program weektwo - Starkville Community TheatreThe Cast Derek Aaron Matt Crane Debbie Dunaway MJ Etua Barbara Frank Madeline Golden Meg Henderson Thomas La Foe Brenda Mayo Terry

About the Cast MJ Etua For the last eleven summers, the SCT stage has been MJ's summer home, as she has appeared in all of SCT’s summer musical revues. Since 1995, MJ has served SCT in many capacities: as an actress in such shows as Doubt; Company; Not Now Darling; A… My Name Will Always Be Alice; Proposals; Deathtrap; Inspecting Carol; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; The Night of January 16th; and Postmortem; as a director for Communicating Doors, Smoke and Mirrors, Mousetrap, and the MTA-award-winning “Art;” and as creative director and playwright for Project P.L.A.Y., SCT's summer children's theatre. Her children’s plays include The Storyteller, Sails and Tales, The B. E. A. T., Akum's Fortune, Vinyltown , and It’s About Time. In another life, MJ teaches theatre arts and oral communication at Louisville High School. To family Etua: “Ma ve akeva a Zambe a su wo.” Barbara Frank When Barbara retired from MSU as a school/career counselor, she set out to find interesting-sounding adventures. She has been part of SCT for several years, having served as secretary, crew member, set worker, props assistant, house manager, box office worker, and party/reception hostess. However, this is Barbara’s first venture onto the stage at SCT, having been in one musical with Niagara Falls Little Theatre during the first year of her French-teaching stint. Since then, the ballroom dance floor has been her stage where she has taught ballroom dance and swing for the last 16 years. She would like to thank her children and cousins for understanding why she couldn't travel to see them as planned, the Starkville Area Arts Council board members and church personnel for understanding her not being available, and her friends for their support. “A HUGE thank-you goes to Pattye, Alison and Jonette for their patience and leadership and to the entire cast for their support and suggestions to help me past the slip-ups while I was learning. It has definitely been an adventure!” Madeline Golden Madeline hasn't been on the SCT stage since September (The Importance of Being Earnest), but it feels like it's been a thousand years. She's got the itch and is extremely happy to be back! She's excited that there are TWO tap numbers in the show and thanks Jonette for all her patience in teaching the choreography. Once again it has been wonderful working with old friends and getting to know our new ones. Madeline sends love and thanks to Pattye for her direction and inspiring vision for this show. She is proud to be a part of this tribute to our troops and to the people who entertain them. This show wouldn’t be possible without Alison's hard work and support and Walrath's creative expertise. Madeline works at MSU in the Office of Agricultural Communications and lives at home with her kitty babies and big ol' yard dog.

About the Cast Brian Hawkins Brian's performance in Let Freedom Sing is one that is near and dear to his heart, having had a grandfather who fought in World War II and several friends who are currently serving with the Mississippi National Guard's 155th Brigade Combat Team in northern Iraq. Most recently seen on the SCT stage as “Larry” in Stephen Sondheim's Company, Brian’s performance in Let Freedom Sing will be his 11th summer revue appearance and his 19th appearance overall at the Playhouse on Main. When not trying to tap dance or bust a move like Michael Jackson on the SCT stage, he works as editor of the Starkville Daily News and is involved in a number of other community activities. Brian dedicates this performance to all the local Guardsmen serving in Iraq and their families, many of whom he is proud to call his friends. Meg Henderson Meg is making her debut in Let Freedom Sing. She is a second-year graduate student in the English department at MSU, a former high school teacher in Baton Rouge, LA, and an amateur triathlete. Meg and her husband have enjoyed watching plays at SCT since their arrival in Starkville, and she is thrilled actually to be a part of an SCT production. Many thanks go to Pattye and Alison for their commitment, energy, and good taste in music, and to the entire company for being so welcoming and for making me feel like I’m as much a part of group as the seasoned members. What an incredible and talented group of people exists right here in Starkville, MS! Thanks go to Carole for her beautiful accompaniment; to Jonette for excellent, patient dance instruction; and to her husband, James, for being understanding of her hectic rehearsal schedule! Thomas La Foe Thomas is extremely proud to be a part of this revue and is attempting to fill the shoes of Bob Hope, a man who selflessly dedicated most of his life to entertaining American soldiers wherever they might be. "I would like to thank my father for his service to our country during the Vietnam War. When he moved to Colorado and mentioned to someone that he was a veteran, that man thanked him. Dad told me that it was the first time anyone has thanked him for being a veteran. I think it is easy to let that slip our minds from time to time, so in our humble way, hopefully this says 'Thank you!' to all of you and to all of our veterans and soldiers everywhere." Thomas comes to this production after finishing up his directing duties for ...Shakespeare [Abridged] and traveling cross-country with the Catfish Moon crew, who raked in all the awards you see in the lobby. Outside of the theatre, Thomas works as an instructional technology specialist at MSU Libraries.

About the Cast Brenda Mayo Brenda is excited to back on the SCT stage in her second summer musical revue. This past season she appeared onstage as “Sister Aloysius” in Doubt; in the booth as the light operator for The Importance of Being Earnest; and backstage making a human head pie, Willie the Amazing Stunt Dummy, in addition to various body parts as the assistant director for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged]. Brenda would like to thank all her cast members for helping her learn those harmony parts; Pattye, Carole, and Alison for just being so absolutely wonderful; her son, Zak, for all of his support; and Aunt Scottie for keeping her everyday life running so she can have time to play. Terry McDowell Terry has been an active member of SCT since 1983. She has served in many official capacities, but her favorite place to be is where she started: on stage, of course! She is glad to be back singing with her new and old friends in this summer’s (her 7th) musical revue. Let Freedom Sing is especially meaningful for Terry as her father, Jack Reese, was a veteran of WWII and was once the proud president of the Mississippi Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He and Terry’s mother, Gloria, are responsible for collecting memories from that battle from veterans all across Mississippi and having them published in an anthology entitled What is Brave? In the foreword of that anthology, Gloria Reese writes, “We feel privileged to have been allowed to assemble these stories. One can’t read them without a deep appreciation of our freedom and a realization of its cost. May we never forget!” It is with these sentiments that Terry wishes to salute all of our past and current soldiers and their families. Many thanks go to the entire cast and especially to Carole, Pattye, Alison, Walrath, Jonette and Jansen for their hard work on this production. “I love you, B.L.” Bonnie Oppenheimer Bonnie is a professor of mathematics at Mississippi University for Women and was recently named Faculty Member of the Year. She plays with the Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra and has played in the pit for one SCT summer revue and sung in the chorus for five others. Bonnie has had onstage roles in Terror by Gaslight, Postmortem, and Laura. She thanks everyone in the cast for putting up with her typical backstage behavior (grading papers, of course!). Bonnie would like to apologize to those frustrated drivers who passed her while she was practicing all of this in the car. “All my love to my husband, Seth, because 'I won't last a day without you.'”

About the Cast Rick Rogers Rick, an engineer with Tronox, Inc., in Hamilton, MS, is making his SCT debut in Let Freedom Sing. A resident of Columbus, MS, for the past year, Rick has thoroughly enjoyed the SCT experience and thanks Pattye, Carole, Alison and the rest of the crew for all their hard work. “Thanks for the memories!!!!” Cindy Ruff Cindy loves summer and she LOVES the SCT summer musical revue. Let Freedom Sing is her sixth SCT revue, and she gets to strut her stuff once again! Earlier this season, Cindy took the stage as “April” in Company. Cindy has been involved with SCT for over a decade now, assisting with costumes, sets and parties and currently serving as secretary. She also managed props as a member of the 2009 AACTFest Best Backstage Crew for SCT’s production of Catfish Moon. She thanks the cast and crew of Let Freedom Sing for all the hard work, wonderful music and good times. Special thanks go to Jonette for sharing her grooving skills and unlimited patience with us. She also thanks her kids, Daniel, Craig and Reagan, for letting Mom and Dad “go play” again this summer. Paul Ruff Paul returns for his ninth summer musical revue at SCT. His preparations for Let Freedom Sing were interrupted back in June when he and nineteen other SCT members traveled to Tacoma, WA, to participate in the American Association of Community Theatre Festival. Their production, Catfish Moon, won several awards (including Best Ensemble Cast), and Paul was nominated for Best Actor. He thanks Pattye for once again pushing all of us to find her vision in this awesome tribute to our troops. Thanks also go to Alison, Carole, Christopher, Karen, James, Josh, Jansen, Lee, Tess, Casey, Bobbie Jo, and Sue. In addition, thanks go to Thomas for all his work both on- and offstage. Lastly, he thanks his kids for all their patience and sacrifice so that he can pursue what he loves most with the woman he loves most. “I love you, babe!” Mary Kathryn Sanford Mary Kathryn is a senior vocal performance major at The University of Mississippi. She has performed in Starkville Academy productions of Anything Goes, Calamity Jane, and HONK!, and in The University of Mississippi's Opera Theatre productions of Die Fledermaus, La Cenerentola, A View From The Bridge, La Perichole, Too Many Sopranos, and Carmen. This is her second summer with SCT, as she performed in last summer’s 10 Out of 10: The Perfect Score. Mary Kathryn is praying for her stepbrother, Ty Davis, who is serving overseas right now.

Page 11: freedom program weektwo - Starkville Community TheatreThe Cast Derek Aaron Matt Crane Debbie Dunaway MJ Etua Barbara Frank Madeline Golden Meg Henderson Thomas La Foe Brenda Mayo Terry

About the Cast Maggie Spann Maggie is a recent graduate of Mississippi State University and is so glad she has Starkville Community Theatre to keep her preoccupied from the “real world” to which she is still trying to get accustomed. She has been active with SCT for several years, appearing as “Kathy” in Company and as “Sister James” in Doubt in the 2008/09 season. Let Freedom Sing is Maggie’s fourth SCT summer musical revue, and she couldn’t be happier to be included in another great show!! “Thank you, Pattye and Alison, for whipping me into shape and giving me this opportunity. Thank you, Carole and Jonette; y’all got us singing and shaking it in sync (we’ve got rhythm!). And thanks go to my fellow cast mates; I’m proud to get to stand next to y’all every night!” Lyle Tate Lyle is a 10-year member of SCT and has worked as an actor, director, singer, stage manager, officer, and more in over 40 productions since 1999. Lyle's favorite productions - here at the Playhouse and beyond - of which he's been a

part include Company; Forever Plaid; I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; Deathtrap; "Art;" The Importance of Being Earnest; You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown; Noises Off; and Rumors. This spring and summer, Lyle was privileged to work as stage manager with SCT's nationally-acclaimed production of Catfish Moon, for which he and his excellent crew earned the

American Association of Community Theatre's 2009 Outstanding Backstage Achievement Award. Lyle extends much appreciation to Pattye, Carole and Alison for their hours of work and dedication to this production; to his mom and dad for their unending devotion to SCT and their great support of him in all he does; and to Lee for all things wonderful. Marianne Ulmer Marianne has been a member of SCT for over 25 years. “This place is like a second home, and my friends here are like family. After skipping last year's revue it feels good to be back in this crazy whirlwind! Thanks go to Pattye, Alison and Carole for having such talent and vision; to Allen for his 35 years of patience; and to my father and brother for choosing careers in the military so that I am able to stand on this stage and Let Freedom Sing!”

Page 12: freedom program weektwo - Starkville Community TheatreThe Cast Derek Aaron Matt Crane Debbie Dunaway MJ Etua Barbara Frank Madeline Golden Meg Henderson Thomas La Foe Brenda Mayo Terry

About the Musical Director Carole Sorenson Carole Sorenson, an employee with the law firm of Brunini, Grantham, Grower & Hewes, PLLC, has accompanied numerous musical productions at SCT including 25; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; A… My Name Will Always be Alice; The Power of One; and Forever Plaid. Once the dust settles on Let Freedom Sing, she will be once again on stage in this winter’s production of Plaid Tidings. “When Pattye, Alison and I first began talking about this show, I had visions of something other than the standard piano/bass/drums, which often equals boring and plain. They allowed me the freedom to experiment and take what would have otherwise been nothing more than one instrument and recreate the sounds of the original artists. If Pattye had allowed me all of the freedom I wanted, this show would have had almost 60 songs and run about 3 hours (AND included “The Hustle”), but somebody had to be in control, and clearly that was not me. Thank you, ladies, for each and every second of encouragement, support and, most of all, for all of the laughter we have shared in creating tonight’s music for this amazing cast. We made one heck of a team (and not one single argument). A HUGE thank-you goes to my husband, David, for putting up with ham sandwiches, leftovers, late-night rehearsals and my constant obsession with creating the perfect soundtrack. Your unwavering support of my passion for music means the world to me, and I love you very much for indulging me all these many weeks. I’ll be home soon; I promise. Finally, thanks goes to this tremendous cast of performers. Each time I am fortunate enough to be able to accompany any cast on the SCT stage, I am never disappointed in the quality of talent and commitment each cast member brings to that show. Tonight’s cast is certainly no exception, as you audience members will soon see. They have worked countless hours, put up with a lot of my bossing them around and changing my mind, and yet never once have they failed to astound me with each rehearsal, getting more finely tuned and always striving for nothing less than the best. The work has been hard and the hours have been long, but the final result is nothing short of incredible. As an audience member, you will not be able to keep from bursting with American pride as we honor the men and women of the armed forces. So, to Pattye, Alison, cast and crew… thanks for the memories.”

From the Director Ten years ago, I raised my hand at an SCT meeting and volunteered to help with the summer musical revue. I will never forget looking at my new friend Lyle and saying, “I will if you will.” With that simple statement, our partnership in musical theatre began! After a few years, Lyle stepped away from co-directing with me and put all of his energies into performing, but he was never far away and whenever I had an idea that didn’t quite work or needed help with choreography, staging or anything else he was there. Including Wednesday night, during our final dress rehearsal. Not long after Lyle stepped away from directing, I was blessed to find Alison – my new partner in crime! Alison is not only the best assistant director ever, but a wonderful friend. She is calm to my crazy and organization to my chaos. After so many years, we understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we are able to keep one another on track and moving forward when the demands of work, life and directing a show get to be too much! It has been an honor to share this summer musical journey with Lyle and Alison, as well as the countless actors, musicians, volunteers and friends who have been a part of these many shows. When I was looking for a theme for this year’s show, I was struggling until I heard that members of our local National Guard's 2nd-114th Strike Battalion were being deployed to Iraq this summer, and suddenly it all fell into place. I am so excited about tonight’s show. It was such fun to create because it allowed us not only to salute the men and women of our great armed forces but also to honor the hundreds of entertainers who have performed for our troops through more than 60,000 USO shows over the last 60-plus years. It also allowed us to perform music from some wonderful, yet varied, times in our history. This is a theme that I hope will resonate with each of you. We all know someone who has served – or is serving – our country. My grandfather, Jesse Jewel Archer, fought in World War I. Less than 30 years later, he was signing papers so my uncle, Joe Archer, could enlist, while still underage, for World War II. It is for these two men, and for your relatives – and for Matt’s brother Jay and Mary Kathryn’s step-brother Ty – and all of our servicemen and women, that we perform tonight. A hero is defined as one of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities. That certainly fits the men and women of the armed forces. But we each have other heroes in our lives, and I would like to dedicate this show to them as well. Especially to my heroes! Enjoy the show! We hope to make you proud ~ Pattye
