STATION COMMANDER'S FOREWORD MARHAM MATTERS

Station Commander’s

Foreword

From the Editor

Deadline for Next Issue: 31st JulyPlease submit all entries for the next issue by the date stated above.

We are now half way through this incredibly busy year. The Centenary celebrations in London are just around the corner, the first F-35 Lightnings are now with us and 617 Squadron are starting to settle in to life at RAF Marham. We were named RAF Benevolent Fund Station

of the Year this month which was great news. That is down to the hard work and generosity of everyone across this station and within the local community. Thank you all! Please remember to send us in your articles, we would not have a magazine without them!

RAF Marham is now the proud home of the Lightning Force.  Weds 6 Jun was, as expected, a significant day in the history of our Station as we welcomed the first 4 aircraft of 617 Sqn.  Since the decision to base F35 at Marham was made 5 years ago, there has been an atmosphere of expectation not just on the Station but also within the region.  To see the aircraft arrive was the culmination of an enormous amount of work across the military and civil sectors and very truly the start of the next 40 years of RAF Marham’s operational significance.  There remains much to do in order to start flying the aircraft and to recommence the journey towards an Initial Operating Capability.   Lest F35 steal all the limelight, the Tornado Force performed brilliantly as part of the Queen’s Birthday Flypast on Saturday 9 June.  The 4-ship formation looked inch perfect as it flew over Buckingham Palace on a clear blue day in London, reflective of the excellence inherent within the Tornado Force across all

ranks, branches and trades .  As with the flypast we provided at RAF Cosford on Sunday 10 June, these are the last times that GR4 will participate in such events.  With the Tornado Force still wholeheartedly committed to operations in Iraq and Syria, our job at Marham is to ensure we support current ops whilst enabling the Station’s transition to F35B Lightning.  This month, as much as any other, reminds us of our mission, ‘Deliver battle winning Air Power for current and future operations’. Finally, I would like to thank all those who have been involved in charitable fundraising on behalf of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.  RAF Marham was recognised as the RAFBF Station of the Year reflecting the hard work of a wide range of our personnel in supporting this significant charity.  Please keep doing what you are doing and keep supporting the ‘Ben Fund’. Cab TownsendStation Commander, RAF Marham.

MARHAM MATTERS NEWS FROM THE LIGHTNING BASING TEAM

The M&F is one of the 3 facilities that are being delivered by Defence Equipment & Support, through Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Balfour Beatty and a number of sub-contractors.  The M&F is located on the Waterfront, where the former 3 Hangar stood, and 97% of the materials were recycled when 3 Hangar was demolished.  The M&F is split into 2 areas, one to provide a facility to undertake modification

and maintenance for the Lightning Force and one as a dedicated paint finishing facility.  The M&F has 8 maintenance bays and 2 paint bays that can each accommodate one Lightning aircraft, plus an additional 2 paint bays for undertaking painting and finishing of airframe components. The M&F is 15 metres high and incorporates 12 steel trusses that are each 65 metres long and weigh 20 tonnes.  Approximately

11,500 tonnes of concrete and 40,000 bolts were also used.  The M&F has doors at each end to provide direct access to the maintenance and finish areas and an internal door to allow transit of aircraft between the 2 facilities.  The maintenance facility has the equivalent volume of 32 Olympic-sized swimming pools.  The 4 large tanks on the Waterfront side provide a zonal fire protection system. The M&F will be operated

as a Whole Force facility by RN, RAF and BAE Systems personnel and is scheduled to be ready for use during Summer 2018.  The Lightning Basing Team would like to thank all for their assistance and cooperation and continued support through the delivery of Project ANVIL.   As usual please see the Marham F-35 Lightning Basing Landing Page and the next Marham Matters for the latest news and pics.

NEWS FROM THE LIGHTNING BASING TEAM

A number of Project ANVIL’s building works are scheduled to be completed during 2018 and the next facility that will be handed

over is the Maintenance & Finish (M&F) Hangar.

2620 SQN MARHAM MATTERS

First and foremost, we have now relocated into the Force Protection Training Flight building. Having been in our previous building since 1983 it has taken a great deal of effort to rationalise our equipment and move only essential items across. Personnel across Station have helped facilitate the move but special thanks must go to C4I who ensured that the IT infrastructure was available right up till the day we left and was in place and functioning in our new building from point of arrival. Overall we managed to relocation the Sqn without any disturbance to our recruiting or training programme.  The other major change was the retirement of the OC, Sqn Ldr Embleton in November. He

ALL CHANGE AT 2620 SQN

Since our last article, 2620 Squadron has undergone some significant changes.

commanded the Sqn for three years and was instrumental in preparing us for the OFSTED inspection season. Under his leadership the Sqn flourished and we hope that it was an enjoyable end to his nearly 38 years’ service in the Royal Air Force Regiment both Regular and Reserve. He is still sorely missed but the newly appointed OC should be in place by the end of September. Sqn training has continued with a new focus. The RAF Regiment is in the process of realigning away from HERRICK type focussed operations to home base security in conjunction with the RAF Police. The Reserve Regiment similarly will now concentrate on Base Support Duties including CBRN, control of entry, reaction to kinetic activity and

first responder duties. Thus, 2620 Sqn Gunners have been mobilised for flight-line security duties in the Middle East as well here in the UK at Mildenhall and at Marham. Recruiting never stops and the Team have planned to attend over thirty events this season ranging from the Royal Norfolk Show, Cromer Carnival, Festival Too, RIAT and the Goodwood Festival of Speed through to smaller country shows and supermarket stands. Now that the Sqn can recruit Females into the Regiment we hope for plenty of new enquires to ensure the Sqn has the manning necessary to support RAF Marham and the wider Royal Air Force.  2620 (County of Norfolk) Squadron RAuxAF Regiment is a Reserve

Regiment Squadron founded in 1983 at RAF Marham. The Squadron is looking for male and female applicants 18-55 years of age for part-time force protection duties enabling Airpower across the world. No previous military service is necessary. We train one weekend a month at RAF Marham or on local training areas and ask for a minimum of 27 days a year including a two-week period of continuous training. Reserve Service is designed to complement your civilian career offering competitive rates of pay and benefits including a tax free yearly training bounty up to £1700. If you would like to know more please search RAF Careers online or message us via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram by searching 2620 Sqn.

MARHAM MATTERS IX(B) SQN

On Saturday 9 June two IX(B) Sqn and two 31 Sqn crews joined forces to form a TGRF four ship and over fly

Buckingham Palace, marking the Queen’s official birthday.

IX(B) SQN

31 and IX Sqn pilots after the Queen’s Birthday Flypast.

Joining the other participants near Southend on Sea, before lining up and flying down The Mall, the GR4s formed part of a trail of aircraft stretching for nearly 50 miles. This year the four ship flanked a Voyager from RAF Brize Norton to provide the annual spectacle and over flew London in beautiful weather conditions at 2000ft.  At this height, much of the London skyline was

clearly visible, with the main tourist attractions and significant historic buildings all standing out in the brilliant sunshine. The planning phase for this event took several months of careful calculation due to the many aircraft types involved and the need to co-ordinate with other London airspace users such as London City and Heathrow airports.

With an eye to the upcoming Centenary Flypast of the Palace, taking place on much greater scale in July, it was re-assuring to see all participants successfully complete their task with great professionalism, before safely recovering to their respective airbases across

England. It is a rare privilege to be able to participate in such a grand public event, and on return to RAF Marham, all crews were jubilant and proud to have been selected to represent the Force in what was the last time that the aircraft will be involved in the QBF. In all, the flypast proved to be a highly successful event, well received by both the crowds below and those watching the broadcast live across the country. With the aircraft’s End of Service in March 2019, the display will go down as another significant milestone in the series of ‘last ever’ events by the Tornado Force.

31 SQN MARHAM MATTERS

Another busy month for the 31 Squadron Goldstars.

The Goldstars have continued to be busy as ever, with the squadron constantly either preparing for, or on operations.  But despite the size of the Tornado force slowly reducing, valuable training and qualifications are still being conducted from RAF Marham.  From the aircrew side, two pilots achieved their pairs-leader qualification and are now qualified to lead operational missions in support of Op SHADER in addition to routine training sorties.  For our engineering team, the final group of line-engineers to be trained on the Tornado have now completed their training modules.  From never having worked on a live aircraft before, they are now capable of servicing the aircraft both before and after flying as well conducting essential checks on the airframe.

With the RAF100 parade on 10th July fast approaching, the build-up is well under way with 31 Sqn taking the lead in preparations. Preparing and launching all the aircraft on the big day will be a significant undertaking for the Tornado engineering team, but planning and preparations are going very well. Some opportunities to practice for this significant event have been available for the aircrew, with 31 Sqn leading and planning the Queen’s Birthday Flypast with the support of IX(B) aircrew and aircraft.  Everyone on the squadron is looking forward to showing off the jet in our final year, especially at such high profile occasions like the RAF100 flypast and RIAT.

MARHAM MATTERS

Recognised by the Independent Schools Inspectorate for its high quality EYFS provision, pastoral and wraparound care, Glebe House School is attracting a growing number of RAF Marham families.

Life is busy at RAF Marham, and with the arrival of the first new F-35 Lightnings last month, set to get busier in the months and years ahead. With a growing number of families on the base, Glebe House School and Nursery, North West Norfolk’s leading independent prep school, has been fostering links with RAF Marham over the past 18 months.

The move reflects the school’s desire to attract and support more working families, as part of its inclusive approach to education. To raise awareness, Glebe House School and Nursery has already run a series of family fun events at RAF Marham to create opportunities to chat with its staff and find out more about all that the school can offer to prospective pupils.

Glebe openly welcomes discussion with parents who would like their children to be considered for the school’s many scholarships and bursaries. Additionally the school offers a Forces discount, making an independent education far more affordable than one might think.

Glebe House School has an established and reliable bus service which picks children up from The Hive at RAF Marham each morning and returns them home after a fulfilling day of lessons and activities.

Many parents welcome Glebe’s flexible wraparound care which includes an early morning breakfast club, a wide range of sports, creative and performance arts activities after the school day finishes, along with a teatime club. Each of these options can be tailored to suit a family’s working week, and ensure that once a child returns home, they are able to relax and enjoy time with parents and siblings.

Flexible and weekly boarding offer parents even greater support, particularly if away on duty, and children enjoy a fantastic confidence-building experience that helps to foster a growing sense of independence. Along with its EYFS provision which gives children a strong foundation to enter its pre-prep division, Glebe House School’s pastoral care was declared ‘Outstanding’ in its most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report.

Sport plays a strong role in Glebe House School’s curriculum, with rugby, hockey and cricket played by boys, and hockey, netball and rounders – along with cricket – by girls on the extensive playing fields throughout the academic year. This is further enhanced by athletics during the summer term and swimming between Easter and October half terms in the school’s 25-metre pool. Additionally, the school runs a Sports Development Programme for pupils with evident ability on the playing field, offering bespoke coaching to ensure they reach their full potential and to

work towards scholarships at senior school.

Creative and performing arts are also an integral part of the school year, with every child given the opportunity to be part of the shows and events which take place, and individual music lessons available across many instruments.

Academic strength is still a key component of a good preparatory education, and all children who stay until 13 sit the Common Entrance examination which sets a good benchmark and ensures they are arrive at senior school confident, ready to tackle the next stage of education. In fact almost 50 per cent of its most recent Year 8 leavers achieved scholarships to their preferred senior school.

From the early years of education to the preparation and transition to senior school, Glebe House School and Nursery is for everyone and creates excellent continuity for its pupils. Why not take a tour and discover what your child is missing – can you afford not to?

An ‘Outstanding’ school

Glebe House School and Nursery will hold an Open Day from10am – 1pm on Saturday 13 October. To take a tour, contact Tamzine Fraulo, Registrar, on 01485 532809 ext 4.

MARHAM MATTERS 'STATION OF THE YEAR'

RAF Marham and its personnel were last night crowned RAF Station of the Year at the RAF Benevolent Fund Awards ceremony, held in London. Representatives from the Station, including Station Commander Group Captain Ian Townsend, were presented the Wilkinson sword by James Allibone Business Development Director from MBDA Missile Systems.Throughout 2017, personnel from RAF Marham carried out a host of fundraising challenges, all in aid of the RAF’s leading welfare charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund. Personnel reached new heights when they scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the team galvanised public interest and participation in events such as the New Year’s Eve 10k and GEAR 10k and they hosted many other fundraising

activities such as quizzes, golf tournaments and even a Tornado pull during their Families’ Day.  RAF Marham’s collective efforts have raised more than £30,000 for the RAF Benevolent Fund.Group Captain Ian Townsend, Station Commander at RAF Marham, said: “As we are home to the frontline squadrons of the RAF’s Tornado Force, we can have up to 250 personnel deployed at any given time. When they are away on operation, it’s not only important that the servicemen and women receive the support they need but their dependents too and that’s where the RAF Benevolent Fund comes in. “Their support on Station last year was incredible, supporting our families with a number of welfare needs, from the youth programmes such as Airplay

to individual grants, they have been instrumental in helping us look after our personnel here at Marham and that is one of the many reasons we try and do what we can to give back to the Fund.”Since 2016, the RAF Benevolent Fund has spent more than £250,000 supporting personnel stationed at RAF Marham. This includes individual grants to RAF servicemen and women, as well as funding for the Airplay youth support scheme, access to relationship counselling sessions with Relate and support for the station’s annual families day event. Air Vice-Marshal David Murray, RAF Benevolent Fund Chief Executive, said: “We are so grateful to everyone at RAF Marham for their generous support of the RAF Benevolent Fund. From taking part in our challenge events, to organising their

own, the servicemen and women of RAF Marham have really put their heart into fundraising for us. Their dedication enables us to continue the work we do in supporting the entire RAF Family when in need.”The RAF Station of the Year award was sponsored by MBDA Missile Systems and James Allibone joined Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier in congratulating RAF Marham at the event.  This is the sixth year that the RAF Benevolent Fund has recognised the outstanding contributions of its supporters, personnel on stations and corporate partners who support the charity each year. The awards ceremony, which was sponsored by Lockheed Martin, was held at Gibson Hall, London.

MARHAM MATTERS RAF MARHAM GOLF CLUB

This has been a huge effort in the past 12 months for the Captain and Members of RAF Marham Golf Club; for such a small Club it was a great achievement.

Club Captain, John O’Connell with his “Captain’s Charity” raised an amazing £3300 for Children Cancer UK including £500 for the QE “Excel appeal” raised early on in during his Captaincy. John would like to thank all the Club Members, their families and friends that helped push the total up each month in supporting his various events throughout the past 12 months. John has organised a number of golf competitions as well as; Horse Racing night, Bingo/Games evenings and a very good  “Oscars” themed final event of his tenure. The traditional Captain’s Day event back in July involved local businesses that helped make his big day such a success with their generous donations to prizes and sponsorship: Double G Clothing, Listers, Middleton Aggregate, Hayley Bearings and Watsons to name a few. Special thanks to John’s employer; Advanced Logistics for Aerospace who donated a TV for a “hole in one” prize, although not won

on the day was auctioned off for charity.  RAF Marham Golf Club has under 70 members and local visiting teams these past 12 months such as Heacham, Kings Lynn, Richmond Park have all been impressed with both the hospitality and the standard of its course during their visits. John, our Club Captain, did his traditional “Welsh Breakfast” every pre-match which raised an extra £40 each time towards the kids Cancer Charity.  John has brought life back into our small Club and wishes the new Captain, Dale King every success for this coming year. RAF Marham Golf Club offer both Service and Civilians a “value for money” opportunity for local golfers and always continues to look for new members.  You can ring RAF Marham on: 01760 446081 for further info.

A CLUB CAPTAIN’S CHARITY SUCCESS SUPPORTING THE QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL & CHILDREN WITH CANCER UK

RAF Marham and RAF Cosford merged female teams and became a strong force ultimately placing above all other teams and becoming the RAF Champions.  The male team managed to place 4th in the men’s overall standings with only 5 athletes

to represent this side - much better than we ever expected! The majority of the team were presented with medals and trophies as a result of the athletic finesse. By combining forces with the RAF Cosford female team, we managed to cover all Track & Field

RAF ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPSOn June 13th RAF Marham’s Athletics

team travelled to RAF Cosford to compete in the RAF Championships. What we thought was just going to be a day of fun turned out to be a

great competition.

events and produce a very competitive side. Through the team events Marham’s representing sides brought back a trophy for winning the Women’s 4x100m relay and coming 3rd in the medley relay. The male team came 3rd in both the 4x100m and medley relays. The relay results were very impressive as all athletes had put in a lot of effort already throughout the day, and many laps were covered. As a bonus event, at

the end of the day we had entered a Marham tug-of-war team; no one within the team had done this before but after a bit of training and team coordination we came a respectable 3rd place.   Though the team had only limited training prior to competing, we thoroughly enjoyed the day! Most of us hadn’t been able to practice the events they were entered in, but positive attitudes and determination shone through it, and it all turned out to be good fun. The day wasn’t without it’s setbacks however, and we had some disappointment when we had a disqualification from the 400m hurdles – this wasn’t ideal, especially for the competitor who had sprinted their efforts away for the last few seconds!  Overall, we had a fabulous day out and came away with more victories than we expected. Plans are already in place for next year and we are hoping to emulate the results for the female team and develop an even more competitive side for the men’s team to achieve a similar outcome. In addition to an already impressive result, Cpl Cuthbertson and SAC(T) Fulcher have been selected to represent the RAF at the Inter-Service Athletics Championship. After all of this, we do really know what we are doing. Which isn’t bad for a last minute thrown together team.  We train weekly in King’s Lynn with coaching from

West Norfolk Athletics Club, we’d welcome new and experienced athletes to come along and try their hand at a variety of events. Athletics offers an event for all builds and sizes, and after learning some basic technique you can become a real competitor for upcoming events!

If anyone is interested in joining the RAF Marham’s Athletics team please contact the OIC SAC(T) Steven Barnett (Barney) or the Deputy IC SAC(T) Gail Musgrove to get involved. If Marham’s athletics team grows in numbers and

technical ability for next year, we could have a very strong chance of bringing back some impressive results from The President’s Cup and The RAF Champs for both the men’s and women’s team! Contact Details- [email protected] or ext 6196 for the male team or

[email protected] or ext 6229 for the female team.

MARHAM MATTERS EX GREASY CHAIN

EX GREASY CHAIN DAY 1

The MT vehicles were picked up at 0930 with bikes loaded into 2 x 50/50s these easily took 5/6 bikes in the back of each and the personal luggage in the crew cab section, leaving enough space for all to transit to EX start.Arriving at RAF Leeming around 1300, all personnel were taken to their accommodation to get settled. A local short ride was planned for all to get used to the standard of riders in the group and check all bikes and kit were in a good state ready for the bigger days ahead. The ride which left from Leeming was 28 miles with 1109ft of climbing and went well with the average speed being a solid 16.5 MPH, all riders showing a high level of fitness and good knowledge of bike handling when riding in a group.

DAY 2Day 2’s ride was the first of the planned routes which had a few small but sharp climbs, preparing everyone for the longer days ahead. This ride was 39 miles long with 1535ft of climbing with a coffee stop half way through, again this ride went well with an average speed of 17MPH. DAY 3 Today was the big planned ride, all EX personnel were at the vans at 0800 ready to tackle the arduous route, bikes were put through their daily checks by the 2 ride leaders and all briefs were given. We travelled 13 miles in the vans to a village close to the Yorkshire National Park. The planned route was a whopping 84 miles and 8100ft of climbing and the weather at the start was ok if slightly windy but dry. All personnel were briefed that as we start to climb the weather would change and should expect some rain with the temperature to drop (all had rain jackets and extra kit required for the changing conditions). The ride was going to plan with all riders being full of banter at the first

coffee stop 34 miles into the route. This was a welcome stop for all to warm up and recharge with a selection of lovely cakes and chat about some of the “mega climbs” and descents we had just completed in stage one of the day! On with the ride, we carried on the route to take in some more outstanding scenery and meaty climbs stopping again 63 miles in for some lunch and more cake. Morale was high and all were looking forward to completing the day and getting their “stats” uploaded to Strava. With boasting rights in mind of an epic day in the saddle, we left for the last stage of the ride back to the vehicles. Approximately 75 miles in we cycled through a quaint little village to hit a sign that stated STEEP HILL climb ahead next right. This turned out to be an absolute “belter” the hardest of many that we had already smashed throughout the day, with 7 or more bends which disguised the top of the climb. With Legs screaming (and tears in eyes) all completed the climb and started to descend the other side which unfortunately brought the day to an abrupt end, with one rider hitting a corner and losing his wheel on loose stones impacting a wall that was located at the side of the road. The riders stopped and instantly took control of the situation and administered first aid swiftly formulating a plan to extract the rider to hospital the fastest route possible. There was no phone signal so 2 riders were tasked to finish the short distance back to the van and retrieve the casualty so he could be taken to Northallerton A&E. This plan had the injured person off the route and in hospital within an hour where he was assessed for injuries then transferred to James Cook A&E in Middlesbrough for more treatment to further determine his total injury list. Staying full of beans but clearly in discomfort the rider was made comfortable in A&E.

DAY 4The day started early with the injured rider being contacted to ensure all was ok (he reported he was content and awaiting scans), all other members of the EX reported to the vehicles at 0830 ready to attempt to complete the last day of planned riding. The name of the day’s ride was the Tanghill Toughy which covered 47 miles and 5000ft of climbing, a hard task with legs of lead from the ride the day before. Morale was again super high although we were missing one of our team. Post the mandatory briefs and checks the route started with another “hum dinger” of a climb which really did seem to just go on and on, as we all got to the top everyone stopped, took shelter from the strong winds, re-hydrated, wiped some cold sweat away and cracked on. This route was up and down like a yo-yo but the scenery we were riding in was something

else. As the route progressed the sun came out and we headed through the national park and made it to the highest pub in Britain. Selfies were taken for Strava, then the final part of the route was completed with some epic descending for miles into the village of Reeth where the vans were parked. Once back at the vehicles, “Kudos” and the good old military ethos of congratulating each other on a “job well done” was completed and we took our final return journey to RAF Leeming.

DAY 5 Friday was pack up and return to RAF Marham day, unfortunately it was to be without our injured rider who was having another day in hospital but was due to be released Saturday with Marham MT on hand to pick him up and deliver him home. This was sadly the end of a very

successful EX which had everything; from changing weather on very arduous rides meant every RAF Marham Cycle Club rider was taken out of their comfort zone and had to push through their own limits in places to ensure rides were completed and no “BONK” was called, to implementing emergency procedures when things didn’t quite go to plan. Thanks, needs to be given to the support RAF Leeming gave throughout the whole week from accommodation and the good standard of food, to the outstanding support we received when needed from MT Section. This week is a good core training for all RAF Marham Cycle Club riders tackling races/sportives in RAF colours this season and I hope that next year it all happens again. Finally, thanks to MT at RAF Marham for making the vans available so this could all go ahead.

The volunteers took time out from their busy roles to repair and revitalise a number of the Rainbow Centres outbuildings carrying out general maintenance which included painting and the replacing of roofing felt on "The Cabin", a leaky building utilised for the storage of equipment in addition to an area used for children's activities.  The buildings were rejuvenated just in time for the opening of the newly

created TRIM Trail which provides an additional extra facility, not only for the younger children, but also for school-aged children during their Summer Holiday Club.  The team were kept refreshed by Centre Manager Dee Gent with copious amounts of tea and cheesecake and were happy to provide their time and proficiency (!) with paintbrushes, and in turn making a difference within the Marham community.

REPAINTING THE RAINBOW CENTRE

Helen was a much loved and most popular member of the staff at the Rainbow Centre (Marham). She gave us 15 years of devoted and unfailing service, loving and caring for hundreds of children throughout the years. Helen was full of life, funny, making us laugh everyday and a joy to work with. Even when diagnosed with terminal cancer, she decided to be joyful about having had a full life rather than sad about having to die.  We will never forget her humour; she will always live in our hearts and minds.

HELLO! I am Charlie Houlder-Moat, Lay families’ worker based with the chaplaincy team. As I write this I am celebrating my two month anniversary here at Marham. I have lived locally for a number of years. I grew up in Suffolk and moved away to Birmingham to go to University and then North Wales to work as an outdoor activity instructor. I returned to be nearer family and have lived in Norfolk for three years.

My background is varied. In addition to adventurous activity instructing I am also a qualified sports coach with my main sports being badminton and rugby. More recently I worked for a holiday company  delivering outdoor activity sessions including survival skills, nature walks and forest bathing. One passion of mine includes engaging people with nature and outdoor spaces to foster health and wellbeing in addition to spiritual awareness.

As a Christian being involved with ministry isn’t new to me, however, chaplaincy and

indeed military life is. It has been a steep learning curve as I get my head around the military jargon and plethora of TLAs! Coming into a world which is so new and a little alien is a scary step. However, what I have experienced since being at Marham is a great sense of community, being welcomed and looked after, people stepping out to help one another and indeed myself as I ask the questions and seek to understand new concepts and ways of working. I have joined a great team here at the Chaplaincy and there is never a dull day with the chaplaincy team!

I want to take this opportunity as you read this to remind you that whatever your current status of belief. Whether you identify as atheist, someone of faith or even Jedi (that’s apparently a thing!) all are welcomed and loved by God. You might not understand the jargon, it may be new and scary and perhaps a little alien,  you’re not sure where to begin or you might have lots of questions.  I want to encourage you to take the scary step

and If you are interested in exploring more about what it means to be a Christian or want to ask any questions then do get in touch. Some of the things I have been asked to consider providing in my role include events and activities at the Chaplaincy and to support those with partners who have been deployed. There is already a lot happening at chaplaincy so come along and see for yourself.

It’s important to remember that you do not need to have a particular faith or background to receive a service from the padres or myself. We are here to support you in whatever ways we can, be it practical, emotional or spiritual.  If there is something you feel we can help you with it doesn’t hurt to ask, so let’s grab a brew and chat it through!

I look forward to meeting many more of you over my next two months. Every Blessing.

Charlie

COMMUNITY SUPPORT MARHAM MATTERS

One afternoon after having been to the community meeting the night before, I thought as a community we needed do something in order to raise money, but more importantly for the Oak Ave park repairs. This park was missed not just by my own family but all the families in the area.

So after putting a post on Facebook asking if anyone would be interested in coming to my house for coffee and cake to help raise the money for our community, everyone responded enthusiastically. However with the amount of people who said yes, I couldn't possibly fit them all in my house! With that thought I approached the Hive and requested the use of the Sandringham Centre, feeling that it would be a better venue. However then thought what else could we do to help to raise more money. Some lovely ladies had stalls, we also had a tombola, guess the sweets in a jar, sweet cones and sweet cups, which all went down amazingly.I don't even know how to thank the generosity of everyone

who donated tombola prizes, cakes, coffee, tea etc... for that I am truly thankful.

Also to everyone who came to the community event, I'm so very grateful from the bottom of my heart because without you we couldn't have raised the money. Everyone I spoke to were enjoying themselves and couldn't believe the turn out.

After an amazing day my husband and myself sat down to count the money and we were completely bowled over by how much was raised. The grand total was £453.55 thank you again to everyone who had a part in the event, whether it was having a stall, donating, helping set up/clear up or coming to the event.  Thank you you are all truly amazing!

MARHAM MATTERS HERITAGE ARTS TRAILMARHAM MATTERSMARHAM MATTERS

The trail which has been put together by 42F (Kings Lynn) Squadron Air Cadets commemorates 40 locations in Norfolk that were (or still are) RAF airfields. At each location there is a fibreglass aircraft and an information board which have been put together by the cadets.  On the 17 Jun over 150 cyclists took to the roads of Norfolk to complete one of the three routes, the longest being 117 miles. Thankfully the weather was glorious and the day ran without a hitch. The baton was carried by multiple participants including OC BSW, Air Cadets and other serving members. Although the Sportive is now complete the trail will remain up until October, so please go and visit some of the locations to help celebrate 100 years of the RAF.

HERITAGE ARTS TRAILIn the month that saw the arrival of the RAF 100 Baton

to RAF Marham we also had one of the miniature batons travel with cyclists on the Norfolk Heritage Arts Trail.
